Fires in Knee Walls

Training Minutes: Nick Martin and company examine some of the issues firefighters face when confronting fires in knee walls, including ventilation concerns, storage fuel load, and more.
These videos are for training demonstration purposes only. When you perform these techniques at emergency scenes and evolutions, be sure to wear full PPE and adhere to your agency's procedures and policies.
This video originally ran on the Fire Engineering site in late 2014.

One of the best Training minutes I’ve seen! Because it was real, they ran into issues and worked around them, and got it done in a realistic manor. And they actually tore up the house which always give a much better understanding than training props. Great stuff!

I learn something every time. This highlighted to me the importance of a coordinated fire attack. Vent the roof first before opening up the knee walls.

knee walls, one of the many structural nemeses for firefighters. Nice video guys.

Great training video, and what a great training opportunity! The difference in the strength between traditional frame & rafter construction vs modern truss on prefab wall construction is crazy.

This was a phenomenal training video! I have firefighter friends and still learned new things. As a visual person, this was perfect! I've lived in houses like this and always wanted to know the fire pattern possibilities, now I know. I added this to my channel for others to learn to. Thanks!! From an EHS professional with mop and glow experience. 😉

Great video. I’ve always found it more helpful to keep the second fire fighter down below the sawer minding his foothold and out-of-the-way of the smoke and flames and then after the sawer is done he can go up and pull the sheathing And typically starting with the top cut east and west than the far cut north and south than the cut closest to the north and south and obviously the bottom cut west and east and pulling the sheathing completely off and getting rid of it it’s always served me well.

Good food for thought. Don't think that tactic would work in some departments though because that roof cut is very time confusing and the engine is really going to be chomping at the bit. In NY we don't like waiting 3 minutes for a slice of pizza! Excellent video though on knee walls and concealed spaces. Thank you.

Professionals have discipline and don't have a problem waiting when command is coordinating an attack. It's probably an issue for vollys and chaos command structures.

So, it's "safe" to assume that this CAPE style house has knee walls?

A better louvre may be created by locating the truss and cutting one louver over one truss, AND make a small cut that crosses both the top and far right cut. That way, if you can punch it down to open it, you can use the hook, snag an edge, and pull it open. Not dropping your louvre in the hole can also be beneficial. Also, make certain to overlap your cuts and get good depth so you don't have to go back and cut twice.... or more.
