Knee Walls 1 - Brian Bastinelli
This is a quick video to cover some basics of Knee Wall construction in older row houses of Ordinary (Class III) and Wood Frame (Class V) construction.
It also highlights how fire spread through out the voids inherent to this type of construction with images from recent trainings and fires.
It is not an all inclusive Knee Wall training but a brief primer relating specifically to these types of construction.
Hopefully you find it of some value. Feel free to ask questions or leave comments to further the discussion on this topic.
Thanks for checking it out.

Wow, I knew firemen worked hard. But, this made me realize fighting fires is way more than putting water on a fire. You just educated me. Thanks.

Thank you for the comment. There is a whole technical side of these operations that many really never get to see.
Great video, Chief. I’m going to show this to my engine company Monday after we watch the video from the fire.

I have a few more up my sleeve...lol
Another great video Brian, I had seen the video of the 3 unit fire you posted. It really was a great stop. Everyone did an excellent job. I’m passing your videos on to a good friend of mine from my old department. He’s a Captain and a damn good one. I know that his crew will get to see these. Thanks sooo much, stay safe...Bob

Thank you. Those were fun. Keep your eyes out, working on some new stuff. Hopefully you'll see some it soon.
So this is interesting if you rown a home like this is there anything a home owner can do to prevent what appears to be basically a funnel for fire to other areas.

Well a renovation could theoretically close up some those areas with fire stopping. I don't know off the top of my head but I assume it would add a significant cost to that project though.
Hey Chief, is it standard for your truck companies on your half story rowhouse fires to continue the cut from the peak down to the eaves to open the collar tie void, living space ceiling, and knee wall space or was that just for a better view of the construction? Our bread and butter is half stories and that's our standard cut... haven't seen it out there much though, cool to see it here. Do you have a term for that cut?

Most of our peaked roofs have dormers, especially in the row houses which leave little room to make this kind of cut. So it is not something that we do frequently. There is some times space enough on the C side of these roofs but you can't count on that. I would refer to it as a Milwaukee Cut if I had to give it a name.

It's everyone's job to understand building construction. All levels, all departments.
