@@dawsont933 No. You are in control of your reputation. The statement is a reflection of accountability. What you're saying dismisses accountability. "you can work hard to build one for a life and one single person can ruin it"; you have control of your reputation. Your name can be dragged through the mud, you can be lied about, but ultimately you are responsible for your reputation and his statement is speaking to making a mistake (personal accountability) and how that can impact your reputation as a whole.

That’s pretty sad actually. It’s a job, nothing more. If you’re a new guy… sure that’s fine. But if you over romanticize it, you buy into the hype. Then you become the guy that associates who you are, with what you do for a living. That’s not healthy. Eventually you become the dude who can’t walk away when you should. Nothing sadder or more pathetic, than a guy who can retire, but has nothing better goin on in his life, because he let the job become part of his identity.

My dad has been a fire fighter for Los Angeles County for 30 years. I almost followed in his footsteps and became a certified EMT, passed the CPAT fitness test and ended up taking the LA County written exam. What’s not talked about enough is how much stress these men/women are constantly under and the toll it takes on their physical/mental health. My dad was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer roughly 15 years into his career at the age of 41 and fought it for 2 years while continuing to work in the station. Fast forward 15 years later, he’s now 56 and just had 3 stents put in his heart in order to prevent a fatal heart attack. 2 of his arteries were 90% occluded and the 3rd was 80% occluded. It’s a miracle that the doctors found the clogged arteries before it was too late. He has been in great shape his whole career and maintained a healthy diet. Roughly 45% of fire fighter on duty deaths are heart attacks and according to the CDC, the number 1 killer of firefighters is cancer. Their life expectancy is also about 10 years less than the average person. Its a greatly respected profession and large departments pay extremely well. I understand that what firefighters are exposed to comes with the job. But I believe more attention and prevention practices should be brought to the health of firefighters and how they can potentially prevent disease and serious health problems.

However If one 20k tool such as a thermal camera gets used once to save a life it make sense. But yeah some say that the spending is a bit much

I've taken a front seat at firefighters... fighting fires only once (thankfully) when I was about 9 or 10 and remember thinking, "Those guys are freakin cool." I dunno if it was the panic and anxiety or simply their Chad aura, but I felt a wave of relief seeing them arrive and exit the hulking red trucks to take care of the fire at our school

This was an awesome review of a fire fighter's life. Let's those who might be interested have a reality check. I really like the part when another fire truck was responding to a different call, siren blazing, and you still get that adrenalin rush even though you ride in a fire truck all the time. I did just before you mentioned it. I was an LEO, and an EMT on an ambulance service for years and I still get that rush. It just never gets old. Great Video.

@Nathan Cook That's such a sweet childhood memory/ education. I'm a 23 y/o girl and my whole life was fascinated and adored fire fighting. Are there any girls with you? I was 3 years in a combat unit in the army but it was girls only. Whichever guys we met/ collaborated with always (almost) had a lot of respect for us and it went great. I am very curious to know, if you have any experience, what is your impression on women fire fighters. This is my dream and my only worries are 2: Not if I could do it but- if a man could do it better than me meaning- would people be safer if I wasn't the one on call? And 2- I'm not worried about now when I'm under thirty, I'm more worried about when I'll want to have children, and be say 30-40 plus- do you still see women in the force at that age? Anyone who has an intake I would love to hear it

The first thing my teacher (who is also a fireman) told me is this isn't a job it's a career you can live with for the rest of your life and look yourself in the morning and know you are doing something very fulfilling. But overall thank you South Metro for this video, it gave me good insight into this life and makes me hungrier for this lifestyle.

We loooooooved everything-the information, teachers, lessons, importance, technology that is even not electricity based (grooves on fire hoses textures on how you’re going into a fire versus back outside to the apparatus) and the soooo many various situations with police officers. We live in a barely 8,000 population independent municipality next to a major city/county for going on two years.
