Fire-rated Assemblies

What happens when you build two buildings very close to each other? What happens when those buildings catch fire? Well ASTM E199 needs to take over for a code standpoint. In this video Jake talks fire rated assemblies and Huber’s Exacor sheathing.

So can it structurally replace ZIP sheathing?

Yes. The MGO panel in this video does carry at replacement rating for 7/16” OSB.

Am building a house with Exacor on two sides. Sealed all the nail holes and seams with joint and seam filler and then went over it with Prosoco CAT5. The CAT5 stuck really well to the Exacor. Being that the smooth side isn't really porous at all, the coverage on the CAT5 is really really high. I can't say off the top of my head, it might've been one bucket did 25sq. I was afraid that being so smooth the CAT5 wouldn't adhere properly, but it actually worked out really well. Exacor + the RGuard system is an excellent combo for fire rated assemblies. I was told a couple of years ago by a rep that Huber was working on Exacor with a Zip like integrated WRB, haven't heard anything more on it. The code where I'm at allows just Dens Glass on the exterior fire rated walls, most builders do only that, but prior to using Exacor, we would always sheath the building with Zip and then Dens Glass over the Zip and tie the Dens Glass into our WRB. Exacor saves a step in that we don't have to sheath part of the building twice and it's incredibly economical when compared to said alternative. Originally it was my intention to use Comfort Board to get my fire rating, but being that our building is maxed out to the set backs, the zoning official couldn't promise me that adding the necessary thickness of Rockwool, that we wouldn't be surveyed over and have a problem, so this was the best alternative and it worked out really great.

Great work. I heard rumors of some sort of MGO with a facer as well but nothing since as well.
