Lead singer Tommy Shaw is similar to Joe Walsh and the Eagles. Once they joined their respective bands any new easy listening songs suddenly took a back seat to pure rock & roll. As usual a great choice. 👍👍❣️

I’ve known Tommy Shaw for 32 years now. We met in 1990 through a mutual friend and we wrote the song “keeping me alive“ together. When I met Tommy STYX had broken up years earlier and he embarked on a solo career which was short-lived. In 1991 he started the project Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Jack blades from night Ranger I forget the drummers name he was a young guy and really amazing. The only thing that’s bigger than Tommy’s talent is his humanity. He is truly one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. I’ve seen him do things for complete strangers even show up at someone’s wedding that he only met once to play a song for them. 🕊❤️🎼

@@jcbass2u Great song. Dennis has one of the best voices ever.
Those “plastic tubes” you are referring to with the drums are called Octobans . They are melodically tuned in sets of eight (hence the name) and they are also referred to as “tube toms.” They have a unique sound similar to a regular tom tom but higher pitched.
Fun fact. Dennis DeYoung was a public school music teacher before Styx secured a record deal. Also, Babe was a huge hit when my hubby and I began dating back in high school. It’s still our song to this day❤️❤️
One of the things that gets overlooked in all the goodness of Styx is their song writing. Some great word twists and turns are in their songs.
This lead singer is Tommy Shaw. Tommy later formed Damn Yankees with Jack Blades of Night Ranger, Ted Nugent of The Amboy Dukes, and drummer Michael Cartellone of Lynyrd Skynyrd. I saw them in 1976 and it was the loudest concert I ever saw! Tommy did something interesting: He came into the spotlight & introduced a song, he had written, before he became successful and was down & out. It was called "Crytal Ball" and revealed his concerns about his unknown future. This is a very emotional and moving song, and still gives me goosebumps. Please react to Crytal Ball.

Great react Jay and Amber. Styx is so underrated - why they aren't in the Rock Hall makes no sense. If you haven't seen it, check out Styx playing live with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra. The kids add an amazing element to Styx's songs. The band obviously loved it, and the young musicians were inspired and excited to be playing with Tommy and the boys.
The best concert I ever went to was REO Speedwagon, Styx and Journey. Epic!
This was posted on social media a lot when Covid hit and we were all shut down and home. A humorous way of dealing with the crisis. This is one of my favorite Styx songs!

About six years ago I saw Dennis Deyoung live in Los Angeles. It was a small venue and the concert was being recorded. Dennis had decided that times were tough and asked that all tickets be sold for $5 a piece! He is a class act.
The drummer in this video is John Panozzo and he is Rockin' In Paradise now, but answering your question, the long acrylic drums are called Dragon Drums. Much like Octobans, but cut longer. They sound amazing on Castle Walls off the Grand Illusion record. You can also see them on the Borrowed Time video.

" The grand illusion" by STYX is an awesome song about how fame is really just a house of cards.
Styx Have Some Good Jams
YES!!! Finally, a Tommy Shaw lead vocal!!! Love him! Love you guys too!!
Definitely one of my favorite Styx songs. I think this make five Styx songs you've done, and you've only scratched the surface. "Lady" is a classic from their early years, as is "Blue Collar Man". From their 80s discography you can react to "The Best of Times", "Don't Let It End", or "Show Me the Way". You can also branch off if you like and do some Styx members' solo stuff, like Dennis DeYoung's "Desert Moon" or Tommy Shaw's "Girls With Guns". BTW, it was Dennis who did the lead vocals on most of the songs you've reacted to... but it was Tommy this time.

And Tommy Shaw's "What If (Remo's Theme)", which was the theme song from the movie "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins" - a fun movie, but didn't did well at the box office. It was supposed to be the first in a series of movies based on the long running book series "The Destroyer" by Warren Murphy. Remo is a cop that was framed and sentenced to death. His death is faked and he is trained as an assassin for a secret government organization. Anyway, I digress. The song was great.
"The Best of Times" is one of their best songs and one of their biggest hits. Dennis DeYoung sings that song and it's such a pretty song. It came out in 1981, the same year as this song. "The Best of Times" would be great to review and I hope they do review it.

Tommy Shaw is singing in this song....and he still rocks it at concerts
My favorite song of theirs is: Show Me The Way. It is a wonderful song and has definitely stood the test of time.
Styx was really two bands in one --- the Dennis DeYoung version and the Tommy Shaw version depending on who wrote and sang a particular piece. For more of the Tommy Shaw version listen to Fooling Yourself, Renegade, Blue Collar Man and Boat on the River.
This song takes me back to cruising the strip with my friends and hanging out! I do wish you guys could have experienced the 80's. It was the BEST time to be a teenager. There's never been another decade with such a vast array of different musical instruments and synth beats that is now iconic. I hope that with discovering this music now you guys get a feel for what the 80's were about and how much fun was had by those of us who experienced it first hand. ❤

Styx is one of those bands where multiple members could be the "front man" depending on which song you're listening to. This happened a lot in the 70's. The ultimate example would be Fleetwood Mac, but it was all over the place back then. In terms of their next biggest song you haven't done yet, that'd be "Blue Collar Man."

Pink Floyd, Kiss, and Grand Funk Railroad also come to mind.
I had the pleasure of hanging out with these guys in the hotel bar after their concert. I was their contact for anything they needed while they stayed there (I worked for the front desk). Nicest guys EVER! One of them kept sneaking into the DJ Booth and would take out any Styx CDs in there, because they didn't want to hear their own music while trying to relax and enjoy some drinks.
THIS is my FAVORITE Styx song.
FYI- The story behind "Babe" was that it was NOT to be recorded by /for STYX. Dennis wrote it for his wife. On her birthday, he performed it to her at a private party. He was badgered into recording it after the band agreed it was too good not to. The 'wandering;' keyboard intro was actually DeYoung playing around on a new electronic piano which he'd never tried before. He didn't know recording had begun. Crazy.

Just saw Styx last night in concert and can happily report that Tommy Shaw still sounds amazing. He and James Young’s guitar playing was outstanding as well. Definitely worth seeing if you have the chance.
I love this band!
Back in 2017 Styx played at our local “Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally” here in Binghamton, NY. After the concert the band members came to the club where my boyfriend’s band was playing. Needless to say they sat in with his band (“Splash”) and jammed. They did Their hit Renegade it was very memorable and yes the band members were great guys! Good times!

Awesome!! what a great experience and memory to have...😎
If you could see them in concert, the level of audience involvement is unmatched by any band playing today. I think you can still see these guys playng smaller venues. There is a concert video that aired on PBS about 8 or 10 years ago. If you can find it, you'll see what I'm talking about. These former fans showed up with their children and their families to sing along with these guys. I absolutely love them. There will never be another STYX.

@@LifeLivedThruMusic No need to be "sarcastic", BJ.
I LOVE this , my favorite Styx song.
One of my earliest memories of this song is playing it on the juke box at a restaurant when I was a kid :)
Styx is a great band with two amazing vocalists: Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung! They have so many great songs to choose from, and I recommend you check out these next: Guitarist Tommy Shaw sang lead on "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", and "Sing For The Day". Keyboard player Dennis DeYoung sang lead on "Lady" and "The Grand Illusion".

Yes suite maddam blue please!!!!
3 People from this line up of Styx (I say this line up because the members changed several times through the years) served as lead vocals. Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw you know has done vocals, but another member of this line up James "JY" Young also does vocals for the band. Some of the songs he has done in the 70s early 1980s include Miss America, Great White Hope, Lord of the Rings, Half Penny, 2 Penny, Heavy Metal Poisoning and Double Life.
This song is off of "Paradise Theater". It came out in early 1981, while I was in the 10th grade, and battled REO Speedwagon's (breakout hit), "HI Infidelity" for the #1 spot on the album chart, for about 4 months! And Styx's tour going through L.A. was, along with Rush's "Moving Pictures" tour were the most popular concerts at the time, if the concert t-shirts showing up at school over the next few days tells you anything! 1981 was a great time to be a teenager & a rock fan, there was so much killer music coming out! The singer on this song is Tommy Shaw, from Louisville, KY. He replaced the original lead guitar & 3rd voice (Styx has always had 3 vocalists, which is why their harmonies sound as good as they do), John Curulewski (sp?), who left the band after 1975's "Equinox", so Tommy's first album with them was "Crystal Ball" the following year.
I heard this song earlier today and at the time thought it would be a good song for the Rob Squad to play. Quite a coincidence. Suite Madame Blue, Sail Away and Lady are also favorites of mine
If memory serves, they were the first band to go triple platinum three times in a row. Amazing live.
Styx: "Rocking the Paradise"
You had to be there. 70s/80s were a glorious time. Totally different world.
Luv this band. The theatrics of Dennis DeYoung combined with the hard driving guitar of J Y Young. With the addition of Tommy Shaw it all came together.
More Styx! Awesome stuff! Keep the 80's reactions coming.
Styx at this point (ca. 1981) were Dennis DeYoung (Keys and Vocals) James Young (Guitar and Vocals (he has the moustache)), Tommy Shaw (Guitar and Vocals (singing lead here)) and the brothers John (Drums) and Chuck (Bass) Panazzo. That's also Tommy Shaw playing the lead part during the bridge. The long plastic tube things on the drum kit are timbales. They're basically tuned drums. Part of the tuning comes from the length of the shell and part from the actual tension of the head. This song comes from the Paradise Theater album, which is a concept album about an Art Deco movie house in Chicago that lasted from 1928 (just before the Great Depression) and 1958. In terms of the story, Too Much Time On My Hands is about a guy down on his luck during the Depression and not knowing what to do with himself. The lyrics, like the lyrics on the rest of the album, play in a then-modern space, but were also somewhat historically accurate (there were soap operas in the 1930s, but on radio instead of television). Paradise Theater is a solid effort from Styx, though it often gets overlooks in the same way that Cornerstone does as it comes in the period where the band is beginning to fracture. They would be broken up within the next four years.
My first concert, 1982, was for Styx and this album. You never forget your first :)
I like Styx.. they were some of my favorites.. Tommy was an underrated singer "Boat on the River" Other songs by them I like: "Lights", "Why Me"
