STYX is a very polarizing band - they have two singer - this was Shaw and he wanted a more rock oriented sound and there was DeYoung who has one of rocks greatest voices, and he was more theatrical. They did a concept album and Shaw hated it and DeYoung loved it and it didn’t end well

They actually have 3 singer/songwriters that includes James "JY" Young whose best song is generally acknowledged to be "Miss America" from The Grand Illusion album. The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Paradise Theatre and Kilroy Was Here were all concept albums. However, Kilroy is the concept that broke up the band until 1990 with "Edge of the Century"(without Tommy Shaw) and then again in 1996 with "Return To Paradise". I also STRONGLY encourage NOT to listen to the "Official Video" of Come Sail Away. Please listen to the album version which actually was the radio version people first heard in 1977 and continues to hear even today.

Come Sail Away is a must but PLEASE DO NOT react to the "Official Video". It cuts out around a minute of the song. Renegade, Crystal Ball, Blue Collar Man, Fooling Yourself, Castle Walls, Lorelei etc... these are all great songs. There are more in their catalogue as well. The think about Styx music is it's ALL uplifting. You can't help but feel great after listening to them. I've seem them live 5 times. It's almost like a religious experience it's so positive and loving, and their real fans are some of the kindest human beings on the planet. You've already seen a ton of great song suggestions - I endorse them all. I havent seen any of any after Mr. Roboto. IF you want to hear something after they broke up and got back together "Show Me The Way" that's a nice ballad - became a bit of an anthem for The Gulf War back in 1991. Another great one I haven't seen mentioned: Best Of Times

The main two are Dennis Deyoung ( Roboto, Come Sail Away, Suite Madame Blue, Lady, Show Me The way, The Best of Times, Queen of Spades, Castle Walls, Babe ( The song Babe started the breakup & Roboto put the band breakup over the top according to Tommy & JY 'as they still cashed their checks')... Tommy Shaw ( Man In The Wilderness, Renegade, Too Much Time On My Hands, Blue Collar Man, Fooling Yourself, Crystal Ball...) James JY Young ( Miss America, Heavy Metal Poisoning, Midnight Ride, Snowblind ( JY & Tommy together).... Styx was one of the greatest & most versatile bands EVER. Great song. Saw Styx in Mobile, AL on the Mr. Roboto Tour. It was a concept album. So played live, the Mr. Roboto story played out with a intro movie, costumes, and later a stage-fight. The story was Mr. Roboto lived in a world where gathering to rock out with live music, such as we were that night in Mobile, was an "illegal gathering". They even had fake police come on stage and making announcements like we were all busted. It was a rock-opera inspired by George Orwell's 1984. They did a great job. It was a good show with all original members. Used to go to a lot of shows in the early 80s between Pensacola, Mobile, and Biloxi.

Thank you for your reaction. I can't wait to seeore Styx Styx reactions. Styx has always had a wide variety of styles and genres. They have blues, rock, synth, prog, jazz, and even some folk music. Every album and song sounds a bit different with different styles and genres. And different members of the band write and perform lead vocals of different songs. Dennis DeYoung on piano and synths did Mr. Roboto and Tommy Shaw lead guitarist did Too Much Time on my Hands and Man in the Wilderness. Styx's first album was in 1972 so not everything they do sounds 80's. If you're going to do Come Sail Away don't react to the music video they cut out about minute and a half the actual song. Lorelei is another great Synth song like Mr. Roboto Crystal Ball is another emotional song like Man in the Wilderness.

I used to be a regular at a neighborhood bar where people would come in trying to hustle various items. Since there was a grocery store a block away, one popular item was actually steak.

This is from the album Paradise Theater and the best track - actually, TWO tracks (because the one leads directly into the other) - from that album is A.D.1928/Rockin' the Paradise. Great stuff! Paradise wasn't a bad album but, as Tasha noted, it did sort of mark a switch from the classic Styx sound (the album just previous to it - Cornerstone - was the start of that switch). The best of Styx, in my opinion, came during the four album stretch of Equinox, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion, and Pieces of Eight.

Man in Wilderness was a little more classic rock sound and is my personal favorite song by them along with Crystal Ball and Suite Madam Blue (both from the 70s) Mr. Roboto album was just a different appeal and created a rift in the fan base; but today I still like that song.

I would LOVE if if you two would react as a couple to the song "The Best of Times" its kind of a ballad from this album (Paradise Theater). The song talks about the best of times and the worst of times, this album was about both the best and worst of times, and I think it reaches out to me today

STYX was a rocking band at first, then Dennis DeYoung/another lead singer started doing more ballads & theatrical things (Mr Roboto).

If you like Styx try R.E.O. Speedwagon. Close friends and touring mates with Styx and similar sound. Try their best song from 1978 Roll With The Changes.

Another good song is a live version of “Riding the Storm Out”. The studio album version doesn’t have that same intensity as the live performance.

Blue Collar Man and Renegade are the songs to check out next from styxx. Check out Damn Yankees! Tommy Shaw (singing in this song) teamed up with Ted Nugent and Jack Blades and produced a block buster album. PLEASE check out Damn Yankees - Coming of Age.

If you like Tommy Shaw singing, I suggest Damn Yankees. High enough and Come again would be good choices.
