Reposition was my Canto (canter) in my first playthrough. Every unit had it, and on flyers I could reposition units over impassable terrain. Nothing like flinging your friend over a mountain :3

Fun fact: the binding blade is still technically strictly better than ragnal since roy gives +6 str bouns while ike gives +4str bouns which means they'll end up with the same damage anyway. Plus roys rise above skill will probably give +2 str and make it do more damage than ragnal. Its kind of funny how the binding blade beats ragnal in every way.

I only played this game once, I couldn't really force myself to replay this game more than that, despite playing through Awakening, several times. Fates, many times, Three Houses a few times but this one? Nah just the one. When I watched the unit tier list, I was pretty saddened to see Timerra put into Firene's Finest, I didn't think she was *that* bad. In fact, with the right build and Sandstorm procs she could be quite good even. But with that disclaimer at around 13 minutes really emphasizing the power level of Maddening might be why, I played on Hard. She more than held her own on Hard but yeah it seems Maddening is a whole other beast entirely.

Yeah, everyone is fine on hard...Timerra needs real investment to hold up on madenning

I put Camilla on Jade in my first playthrough on hard. The extra movement is great, the extra speed is great, 4 res... I'll take it when the unit's base is 0. Everything else isn't really needed but A) I'm not replacing another unit's emblem with Camilla and B) it's better than gacha hell for a good bond ring. Also, have Soren decoy your Ike unit, give the Ike unit a Tiki blessing, warp the Ike unit into the enemy horde and click Great Aether. Doesn't work on maddening, but definitely does on easy or hard.

In defense of Holy Stance: i put it on everyone in preparation for my latest pre-ch10 fell xenologue slog and it was instrumental in that case for getting the little bit of extra chip needed to pick up kills i was barely missing otherwise, often multiple times per map. Very helpful in that context especially given your units have set stats and classes, limited equipment options, and are generally worse than they should be for no reason

I'd like to see a tier list of Radiant Dawn, due to how weird that game is with availability and seperating the full cast into three groups. Love Micaiah, but she either gets the right stats from level ups and can actually kill slower units, or she gets nothing and gets the ability to barely be as good as resident joke unit Meg.

I like Radiant Dawn because even though Meg is the epitome of a terrible unit, the structure of Radiant Dawn is such that she's able to do a few things that you're genuinely happy to have her do. It's not much, mind. But it's more than be used to keep the bench from blowing away.

One thing about Camilla is that her final weapon (Camilla's Axe) is just kind of strong. You can pretty much ignore the bonus damage it can sometimes give: the might, hit and weight of this thing make it just a decent weapon in its own right. Oh and her engage attack actually deals physical or magic damage depending on the axe you use it with.

Something that's kinda useful about the engraves that increase weight for more might on weapons is that if you're already carrying around a smash weapon to increase damage for engage attacks, you might as well forge them with those engraves because its not like you aren't getting doubled anyway. It's a minor advantage but it does make killing bosses just a bit easier sometimes. Ofc 3 mt can potentially not make any difference and very rarely does it make any turn optimizations actually possible, but in my maddening run there were a few times where it enabled a more consistent kill strategy. Another synergy I thought was interesting was emblem Lucina on a wolf knight. On top of just being on a cav class so you get the 100% block effect, chain attacks with knives actually proc poison which means that you get that extra little bit of value per hit. And it allows for funny stuff like getting a dual assist proc against a really high defense boss to poison them, which then let the wolf knight pull up and max out the poison stacks for a lot of chip damage through chain attacks and poison damage despite not originally being able to do damage to the boss.

Absolutely There's a specific kind of phrasing that REEKS of mobile garbage, that got all over the skills in this game. Everything is legally/technically correct, but is utterly incomprehensible and full of ambiguous referrents. Also strange order of operations things like Rosado's personal skill, for example, which iirc is phrased as "inflict accuracy-(I forget) when attacking a male to unit", which just feels very strange, compared to "Increase own evasion by X while attacking a male" Same effect, but the description in the game is mind warping to the point that you have to test the skill to actually figure out what the hell it even does. Who is this skill effecting? Logically the enemy, but maybe it's a drawback for a great unit? How long does the accuracy penalty last? Does the accuracy penalty get applied if I miss? If I target multiple does it effect all of them? It FEELS like someone who isn't a first language English speaker, but has a degree in linguistics, and so can reliably make things that are technically correct while utterly failing to make them resemble human speech, capture intent or meaning, or even be worded efficiently, since many of the worst offenders are needlessly wordy to boot. The skills usually don't tell you what they do, they're worded so poorly that they're hints to figuring out what they do on your own. My only other clue is from people who have played Heroes, and have confirmed to me that this is absolutely the way skills in Heroes sound. So I suspect they got whoever does that game's skills to do this one. And it's bad. Real bad.

@@aprinnyonbreak1290 Oh 100% all the skills are phrased as if the Heroes developers were to describe the skills. As someone who plays too much FEH I can attest to that. I think the reasoning for it is that the devs were anticipating an influx of players who were playing the mobile game first/exclusively to pick up Engage. Basically mobile gaming has impacted how console gaming is. 😔

But Tibarn threatens to throw Sothe into the fire unless Michiah surrenders. Due to a blood contract she cannot. Thankfully Sanaki I think makes Tibarn spare Sothe and both parties don't lose anyone in a bonfire

Imo Camilla and Veronica are underrated, as well as lief but that’s a different comment (his highs are better than marth’s lets be real, vantage wrath is actually good.) Camilla gives any unit flyer mobility which is really handy, and her stat bonuses are decent, her emblem skill can work with smash weapons, there’s no reason you can’t slap her on a fast combat unit and just benefit from the extra movement and mobility, and her veins are silly but not actually useless, as a combat emblem she’s probably better than sigurd too, because aside from canter sigurd doesn’t actually offer that much, especially on field. Veronica is somewhat similar to a dancer, or even byleth, contract is worse than dancing, but it still lets veronica’s user contribute without needing to be good themselves, (and contribute in more important ways.) pair her with soren and it’s pretty easy to fire 2 boltings, or use Micaiah twice in one turn, and if she can’t do that she can summon a body that’s at worst a meat shield. She’s definitely comparable to house leaders ring imo but if you field her, even on a weak unit, you’ll still get something from it.

If only Contract wasn't an engage skill

I think the reason that a mage with Soren is immortal is because in Path of Radiance, he's the only character that doesn't die when killed on the battlefield. You can't use him again, but he just goes back to the convoy. Probably because he has cutscene armor. I found this out on my first every playthrough of Path of Radiance where, because I had never played a strategy game prior, I let most of my units die by chapter 8 because I relied too much on the Jagens and 2 of them left the party right before then. I actually had to restart my playthrough because everyone else was too low level to do anything.

Oi, I'll have you know Veigar's new(er) event horizon is just as good if not better than the old one! The lower base cooldown and changes too cooldown reduction (now ability haste) give Veigar signifcantly higher uptime on Event Horizon, upwards of 60%. This, paired with the increased cast range, allows the skill to be used as an area control tool for denying space for approaching or deffending, splitting teams, and making enemy engages akward as they have to stumble through repeteated zones of "go around the long way, wait, or get stunned for nine years". When the cooldown is ~5 seconds, the field lasts for 3 seconds, and the stun is 2.5, you really can just spam it relentlessly with impunity. It doesn't even have to hit anything to do it's job.

I do think that youre undervaluing camilla. Flight movement in support units is EXCELLENT. Flying Seadall alone opens up so many opportunities. A 7 movement flfying dancer would be considered insane in any other game! Need to rescue a unit in a pinch? Just fly towards them.

Gallop is great on a unit with pincer attack. You can always engage to get that extra distance to get behind enemies for an x2 attack then Canto back Echo is pretty good on Ivy with her grasping void making the second hit just do extra damage

Marth benefiting from breaking and giving you avoid on attacking isn’t anti-synergy, it’s not super good he only gets avoid on initiation, but it’s not anti-synergy, like how hector giving avoid and defensive stats isn’t anti-synergy.

I remember I got Awakening when that game was blowing up but I only got about halfway through it I think, because I insisted on playing in permadeath mode since non-permadeath was for CASUALS (I was about 14 at the time), and I kept losing my units or not protecting Robin/Chrom properly since I barely knew anything about how Fire Emblem mechanics worked (the closest equivalent game I'd played was Disgaea) and getting game overs, and it got tedious having to restart every time. I'll check out The Sacred Stones at some point though, cause I did really like the basic mechanics of the series from how I remember them in Awakening.

The thing i find funny about the idea of gay Chrom and Robin is it doesn't make sense. it is not only canon that Chrom has a daughter, that daughter is in this game, and it's a plot point that Chrom is the genetic father, meaning Chrom can't be gay. unless... they had a kid and Robin transitioned afterwards.

You bring up at one point IS' treatement of same sex options, and hoo boy, Three Houses was not nice to the gays. So in Conquest for M/M you had Niles, and yeah he was a deviant but him and Corrin had a surprisingly nice relationship, I enjoyed it, also you miss out on Nina, which is a net positive IMO. In Three Houses at launch there were three male characters you could S support with: Linhardt, Gilbert and Alois. Gilbert and Alois are non romantic, and Alois explicitly says "oh and later Byleth married a woman", so that's lovely. Linhardt meanwhile is a character who really doesn't read as being romantically into Byleth at all, so the pairing feels weird. Meanwhile they gave five options for F/F pairings at launch: Mercedes, Dorothea, Edelgard, Rhea and Sothis (although Sothis is weird overall). They later realised I guess that people weren't happy with the total lack of gay options, so they added Jeritza, you know, the murderous psychopath, exactly who the gay community wants to be associated with. Finally they gave us a good option in Yuri who DOES have good chemistry with Byleth and actually works as a bi option. And he's locked behind a DLC paywall. I have no clue why they didn't just make all three lords Bi.

@@ImportedCheese you make it sound like combat with mages is irrelevant, enemy Ivy, enemy Hort, Griss, Zephia, Mauvier, even Marnie, as well as E-veyle and sombron all attack with magic, and there’s no shortage of enemies that have magic weapons, not to mention that thunder tomes are 3 range, meaning a lot of units can’t counter thunder tome enemies at all. Yes you can cheese engage with bonded shield and never have to worry about def or res as long as you can keep bonded shield up, but as far as normal combat is concerned def, res, and hp all matter more than the hit rate you get from each point of dex. Tiny amounts of dex never swing a combat, you just have better odds with more dex, 5 points of dex means you hit about 10% more often and have 2% more crit, it’s a positive effect but 5 res can be the difference between life and death, and if it isn’t, it means your unit can deal with mages way more reliably without needing healing or ever combing close to death. And hit just can’t do that for you. Because it’s just not a stat that does anything on its own. It’s only good if your other stats are good, particularly the offensive stats, and it’s other savings grace in granting crit rate scales pretty poorly. Consider that Ivy is one of the best units in the entire game and her dex is completely garbage, it just doesn’t matter that her dex is bad because her other stats (mag, def, res, and hp,) are all actually good, and her speed is workable, so people just have her stack speed and take advantage of all her other good stats, and if hit is an issue just slap lucina’s engrave on a wind(etc) tome to give her 30 more hit, and forge her weapon as well for 10 more hit, Hit fixing is really easy, but having overkill hit doesn’t do anything, Dex is around as bad at luck, and personally I prefer high luck because it means I don’t have to worry about enemy crits as much, although dex is probably better. All the same it’s mid compared to res just because res is reliable and significant.

Stuff got worse after h*roes, that's why all the skills in Engage are so convoluted

Ike is a "mercenary class" And they have balancing stats.. I guess that's the way Ike are in these games(?) I mean... He is the very first to have significant changes between versions. Even Marth does not have many differences, if any, from FE1 ~FE3~Amibo prologues~Warriors~Smash. I think the only difference is from his artwork, nothing really else. And no! Leaf does not count due to the timeline events. ALSO NO! Hector and Elliwood are old but they are the same, only older. If Elli would fight alongside you like Project Ember that would be something to discuss but no.

Leif imo is legitimately significantly better than hector, Like he legitimately can enable one of the best combat builds in the game. A vantage wrath unit with 1-3 range who will likely crit and one shot every enemy that attacks them, and won’t need something like bonded shield provided their crit/hit/dmg is reliable enough to one shot their attackers is good, And it’s something basically only Leif can enable because of adaptable. It’s better than the best marth can do and it’s better than hector, and makes Leif one of the better combat emblems, provided you actually try to do it. Otherwise he is pretty bad tbh. But still imo that makes him better than hector, who feels redundant and outclassed outside of piercing glare. Also yes leif is undoubtedly better than nothing, you don’t have to engage, and he gives skills and stats.

@@ImportedCheese if it’s really that scary, you can use the well to get enough sp to inherit hold out from roy, which would help you set up vantage, and the higher level ones would let you have protection at 25% hp, if setup is the issue you could also use flame tiles.

Fun fact: I’ve played the FE games since they came to the west (and FE6 through fan-translations) and Engage is the only one to date I have found the story unbearably bad. I legitimately ended up skipping all the cutscenes by about 3/4 in.

Did you forget this is Johto we're talking about, the region where strong STABs are actively difficult to come by for Pokemon that aren't Normal or Water type (Kingdra and Dragonite resist Surf by the way)? Paraflinching is objectively a strong strategy that significantly elevates Dunsparce's viability in Johto, especially in HG/SS where it gets Serene Grace of all abilities. Dunsparce's Paraflinching factually fares much better than other low bst Pokemon trying to spam attacking moves against gym leaders and other strong enemies. Basically stunlocking strong opponents to beat them despite having weaker stats, how many Pokemon achieves this in one turn with one move? Instead of just obnoxious smug laughter please provide a stronger arguments backed up by actual in-depth comparisons and evidence if you want to disagree. Mocking facts does not refute them."

@@ImportedCheese Roy is barely in the game. The first 11 chapters are relevant and their combat is crucial for the early game. Other rings like sigurd and miccy are just not that great early on. Consider them Jagens if you will.

​​​@@ImportedCheese Aye, P5 is a good one. Out of the SMT games I've touched, it's easily my favourite one so far. And yeah, SMT puts up a bit more of a fight in general lol Though, I'm pretty sure P5 could still be beaten by only pressing A. There's so much you can do outside of combat, I wouldn't be surprised if it'd be somehow easier in P5 than your typical Pokemon game, after a certain point. Probably grindier, but easier. Not something I'd recommend tho lol

SMT 3 : Nocturne is a good start for the mainline games, and the modern ports not only have voice acting but optional (DLC :smoldemifiend:) areas that lets you grind the equivalent of rare candies (it kinda breaks the balance tho, and those areas feel very romhacky)

@@nonifuji1566 SMT4 seems to do the job quite well too. The first few trips to Naraku can be brutal af, but otherwise it seems to be relatively smooth sailing. Well, of what I played, atleast

@@APootisBirb Yeah, only SMT 1,2, and "If..." (and earlier) are truly abrasive to modern JRPG fans in my opinion (and even then, it's just the early game where most demons will call you a dumbass instead of being recruited)
