    Thank you! I have to admit that I'm not very good with 3D design. I use Meshmixer, which is very user-friendly and intuitive (almost like sculpting clay). There are many videos on KZread explaining the basic features that use, much better then I could. Making such a video would be an incredible amount of work for me, and I prefer to spend that time on woodworking. :)

    Master Dennis (Yes, I'm of Irish Decent), you have a great creative mind! In which State do you live in? Or are you outside of the US? I am also curious to which University you attended to get your CAD and CNC knowledge? I can't imagine someone actually self teaching this knowledge, however, I guess that is possible? I could never do it, I am a poor ready. Always have been. I've always learned things on my own with the hands on method, and lots of mistakes to learn by.

    Thank you for your kind words! To answer your questions: I live in California, but was born and raised in The Netherlands (I love Ireland, and the people there are so incredibly friendly); I moved to the US about 13 years ago. I attended the University of Utrecht to get my masters and PhD; but not in CAD or CNC. I got my degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, with a PhD in Biochemical Physiology. Woodworking is just a hobby of mine, and I support you in teaching yourself anything you want! As you mentioned: don't be afraid of making mistakes. I made tons of mistakes, and still do. :)

    As a by the by, you really dont need to do any roughing - you could use a tapered ball not with 75mm long shank it has a cutting width of 32mm or a 100mm long shank with cutting width of 60 mm save yourself some time!!!!!

  • @dennisvanhoof9958

    Thanks for the suggestions! Olive wood is very hard, and my personal experience is that I get better results and put my machine under less strain when doing a roughing pass with this kind of wood. :)

  • @AnOldMansView

    @AnOldMansView

    @@dennisvanhoof9958 Give it a try you will be surprised, I was very sceptical when it was suggested to me as well. I do single pass carving with Red Gum, Mallee Root, Oak pretty much any hard wood I come across. As it was explained to me by an old timer, if the full cutting width of the cutter wasn't intended to be used why put it there. The benefit of using the full cutting width of the tapered ball nose is due to its design it pre cuts ahead of the actual ball nose. That way the ball nose has always a stress free cutting zone. If you decide to give it a try would love to know how you go. Your CnC router works very well, I think that is due to the way you maintain the machine and do your work. I have watched many of your videos and your work ethic and the way you go about creating your works of art is to be commended. My favourite is your violin build. Have a great day and greetings from the colonies downunder. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dK1p2JmeeKzfXaw.html this video shows single pass. You will notice it is not the standard ball nose. Tapered End Mill R1.0*D8*60*100L*2F Tungsten Carbide Steel 100mm 1pcs 2 Flutes. I use the 100mm shank for deep carving when I need a lot of clearance, otherwise the 75 mm length shank is perfect for most of my jobs. Doing a single pass and saving time also means for me at least that I can afford the time to use the 1mm radius, I've not had a reason to use .5mm radius yet.
