Finnish Navy Hamina-Class Fast-Attack Craft Fires Torpedo For The First Time

The Finnish Navy conducted a torpedo firing in the Northern Baltic Sea with a TP45 torpedo borrowed from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.
=====================
This was the first time that a torpedo has been launched from a Hamina-class fast-attack craft and the first time in decades that the Finnish Navy has operated a piece of torpedo weaponry.
The objective of the launch was to ascertain the capability of the TP45 torpedo system as a part of the upgrade of Hamina-class fast-attact crafts. According the Commander of the Finnish Navy, this test helps improve the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capability significantly, ahead of the introduction of the new TP47 torpedo.
The Finnish Navy has placed an order with Saab for torpedo and associated combat system deliveries for the Hamina-class fast-attack craft and future Pohjanmaa-class corvettes. The Saab Lightweight Torpedo or TP47 will be introduced into service use in 2023 and replace the TP45.
The TP47 is a lightweight torpedo particularly well suited for operating in the specific and complex naval operating environment of the Baltic Sea.

    The only thing that does "long range" underwater anything radio frequency wise are extreme low wave lengths from 0Hz to 300Hz, and your out of luck because the the Navy has been using them for communications since the 80's up to the 2000's. Other countries still maintain ELF transmission sites for communications with their submarine fleets. That transmission bandwidth is measured in BITs though so wireless transmission rates underwater are very impractical.

    @LazicStefan I believe the original comment was talking about discreet secure communications between say a weapon and it's launch platform or between a hunting submarine and a friendly surface ship. Colors of light that lend themselves to covert use like reds and infrared only cover very short distances, just over a hundred meters in most cases. Practical distance wavelengths would be in the blue and higher range, but that would necessitate your ship or weapon constantly flashing very bright lights underwater. Which in nighttime combat conditions means your a well lit very noticeable target.

  • @bly2489

    @bly2489

    As already stated, long range underwater communication already exists, but is very impractical for most applications, especially between guided munition and a firing platform. And that's just down to physics, as water is just really good at stopping any radiation.

Most of the threat u will dispatch won't b big enough to aim torpedo at other problem but still cool option, if stalking at night in stealth as 1st strike b4 u pour it on, or fire & run away.
