Finishing the Foundation | Building Our Alaskan Cabin

Thought we were waiting until spring to continue working on the cabin? Nope! We plan to continue working as the weather allows. We rented an excavator to trench for our water line, added a vapor barrier and gravel, and installed our cross beams.

You both are absolutely capable and you have all the ingredients that people want to see: the dog, tools, wife that’s tough as nails, yet sweet commentator, husband who knows how to build, and, of course, righteous beard! You’ve picked Alaska and are building off grid. I really look forward to your videos to watch your progress. I learn something each time. God bless.

    Very stout foundation. It'll be interesting to see if that vertical culvert will work to keep the water line from freezing. The closed in and insulated crawl space should help as well to keep things under the house from freezing. Looking forward to seeing your house going up. Have you shared the house plans? Thanks for the video.

    Thank you! There will be more to the culvert pipe at a later time that we will share. We have not shared the plans of the home because we have had to make several revisions to our final plan due to certain material availability and costs in our area. It will be a small cabin with a partial loft, we are working to keep it lightweight but insulated very well to reduce heating needs from wood or alternative. We will be building a cold roof system even though it is a cathedral ceiling. Ice damning is a big issue here. Thank you for your support!

    Looks like you got just enough of a break in the weather to make some good cabin progress. Looks like the top eight to twelve inches of ground was frozen. You made quick work of the plumbing with the backhoe. That size backhoe was perfect for the size of your work footprint. The piers look really good. The vapor barrier was a nice idea. I haven't seen an update on the status of the spring. Is that going to be able to get you enough daily water? Nice job once again. Thanks for the video.

    It was frozen! The excavator had a difficult time cutting into the frost. We were cutting it close but were able to finish just in time. You will be happy to know our next video is about the spring and where we are currently with it. Spoiler, it has been working out great for us! We are excited to finish the final part in the springtime but for now, we are just thankful to have a water supply within walking distance 😀 thanks for your support!

    I like what you did guys especially putting in the tarp down and then gravel over that's really smart it won't have any vegetation growing underneath your place also somebody told me Alaska also take small gravel like you had and the first five feet around the house gravel it and then roll it multiple times and compact gravel really tightly you will have no vegetation grow around your house you'll kill it it will kill the vegetation if you have a 5-ft gravel strip from the house out and then compacted really really heavy

    Have you thought about getting a bandsaw mill to make lumber from your own trees? Some other channels do that and it looks like a good idea.

  • @northtoalaska2022

    @northtoalaska2022

    6 ай бұрын

    We have! Check out our other videos if you are curious we built a sawmill stand and assembled our mill in that episode. They are nice for many small projects with smaller-dimension lumber. With us needing a cabin to live in for the near future we do not have time to properly dry wet-milled lumber for our home construction, building logging roads on our property to access the trees needed would also take a lot of time and may be impossible with the several feet of snow we now have. But we do have several outbuildings planned in the future that the mill will prove to be an asset for low-cost lumber.

    Very clever idea with the water line culvert. You mentioned "if" you insulate the crawl space. Will you use the crawl space as a root cellar?

  • @northtoalaska2022

    @northtoalaska2022

    6 ай бұрын

    We will only insulate the subfloor, the crawlspace will be vented to prevent moisture buildup which can be an issue here. We are hopeful that next year when we construct our spring house it can work as a root cellar too, time will tell 🙂

    You missed a big opportunity, instead of the ribbed PE pipe water line chase to bring your water line from underground to the cabin floor you should have used a piece of 12" diameter sonotube and secured a piece of 1.625" OD, 1.481 ID "K" copper pipe vertically in the exact center of the sonotube, then purchase 2lb density two part, closed cell, insulating, pour foam to fill the void between the sonotube and the exterior of the pvc pipe. Part A and Part B of the pour foam are mixed quick and then poured in expanding very quickly. It would take a few batches to fill the void but very quickly you would have a fully insulated vertical water line chase and be able to back fill it. Then your water line with the heat trace goes down through the copper pipe and out the bottom into the trench to your spring. Once the foam is cured you can remove the sonotube if you like or not it is not necessary and in the event of a repair in the future you can always pull your water line through the pipe in the center without unburying the foam column. An 12" sonotube with a 1.48" copper pipe center tube would give you 5.19" of foam thickness surrounding the copper center pipe, polyurethane foam is usually an R value of R7 per inch of foam so your insulated column would be an R-value of 36 which is excellent and even better insulation than the 5.5" of fiberglass insulation in most home exterior 2x6 walls. Leave a few inches of copper pipe exposed at the bottom and cut a notch(add a rubber donut acting like a grommet in the notch to assure you do not cut the water line) for the water line to turn 90 degrees into the trench. Why copper pipe? Copper is the most heat conductive metal it will take 'heat' from the earth and keep the temp inside that copper pipe above freezing as the outside of the copper pipe is heavily insulated from the frozen soil near the surface and especially between the ground surface and the underside of the cabin. Seven feet below the ground surface the temperature of the earth is 50-60F constantly winter or summer and the copper pipe with move that heat up from below to keep that water line flowing freely.

    Interesting idea, thank you for sharing. We have a similar plan we will be using to finish this installation minus the copper pipe at a later time. Copper pipe is prone to cracking from frozen water and I would worry it would be near impossible to replace if it were to burst in this situation. The Pex tube is flexible enough that it should not burst in most situations where it would freeze.

  • @chrisdaniel1339

    @chrisdaniel1339

    6 ай бұрын

    @@northtoalaska2022 The copper pipe is not for the water to travel through it is only for the PEX waterline and heat trace to go down through the center of the foam insulation cylinder. The water never touches the inside of the copper pipe. The copper is specifically used just to 'pull' heat out of the ground as a passive way to keep your water line from freezing without have to turn on the heat trace reserving that for the absolute coldest nights vs something like pvc pipe that is an insulator and would not draw heat from the earth.

    Yum fresh bacon! We calculated the wood beams to hold 70k lbs combined weight. We should be nowhere near that with the small cabin and snow load. 🤞 we are working on our floor joists and subfloor now. Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving too! We had dinner with friends and family here in Alaska it was a good weekend 🙂 we had unusually warm weather this week, we went from negative 3 as a low about two weeks ago to a high of 38 rainy and windy this week. Most of our snow melted from the rain and now it is an icy mess 😅

    Interesting! There are a lot of ways to get the same result undoubtedly. Even though our area has no codes, regulations, or inspections we still work to follow the correct guidelines and advised construction methods for this sub-arctic region. We want the home to last our lifetime and be comfortable for many years living inside it full-time. It is quite the possibility we will live in it for the rest of our lives. Glad you are enjoying our videos 🙂
