Putting Down Roots in Alaska | Pouring Concrete for Our Cabin Foundation
We completed the first step in building our cabin! Roughly 40,000 pounds (18143 kg) of concrete, mixed on-site, and a total of 21 pier foundations! Just in time before the cold weather sets in.

All you need to tie the rebar is a pair of channel lock pliers probably # 6 the with the hook on one grip 2 twist and your done . I was a rod buster for 9 years . In my youth it was great money back in the mid 60's but life expectancy was short most were very hard drinkers.

The mixer is really great for taking on a project like this. It really reduces the amount of labor to do the job. It was a big relief to complete the concrete before winter set in. I think we still have a few more weeks before things start to freeze up good here. But we will continue to work on the cabin if the weather allows! I'm glad we can share our progress with everyone!
Your lab is so precious. So many expressions on his face. You two work so well together. ❤

When cutting Sonotube, get a piece of it cut the size you need, cut a slit in it and place around tube. Draw your strait line around and keep sliding it down to draw your next line. Far more efficient than measuring all around in several places. I did the same thing my first time until someone finally suggested I stop wasting my time
Love watching you -- what a great job your doing!!

Haha, I know it all too well, there was a time when I had no personal tools. I would commonly have to borrow tools from family, or scrape by with the incorrect tools and do the best I could. Not being able to afford to hire other people to do the work I needed to be done I started investing in tools and equipment over the years so I could make progress and improve the quality of my work. It can bring a lot of fulfillment in life to learn and build. Correct tools make for a nicer finished outcome.
All of your work is of the highest quality. Well thought out and executed professionally.

Cut the hook section off your manual rebar wire tool, insert it into the chuck of your cordless drill and wrap the rebar faster. To save concrete and still have a big footing, drill the 18"hole and fill the bottom 10" with concrete and let cure for 4 hrs, then stick your rebar in and a 12" sonotube on top of your footing and fill. This would be strong enough for any 3 story building.
@northtoalaska2022
7 ай бұрын
We will save the hook at the end of the two broken tools to use in a drill in the future! Our original plans did include 12 inch sonotubes with the plastic footers on the bottom. In this area, when we priced out buying 7 to 9 feet of 12 inch sonotube for each form vs. only 2 to 3 feet of 18-inch sonotube, the extra concrete was cheap enough that it was not worth it to do the extra excavation work on a 12-inch tube. If we did not have so many peirs to do, I would definitely go the route you are suggesting with not using the plastic footer forms it is more cost-effective. With not having extra people on hand , having all the 18-inch forms set and level made it really nice to go down the line pouring concrete without stopping to set up the next form. Thank you for your input and ideas 🙂
HUGE props to the meticulous effort on that foundation. Looks stout as hell.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I really do believe that it is important for women to learn many of these skills. While I enjoy the more typical feminine skill set of cooking, gardening, and maintaining the home, I love learning new skills that improve our quality of life and feel that it is important for both of us to have a hand in building this life. Your kind words and support mean so much, and I hope to inspire young women out there to follow their dreams and don't fear trying new things, even if it is out of the norm for today's standards.

It worked out great for the foundation! We have a bunch of other projects planned for it as well. Hopefully, it will hold up great for us. Unfortunately, the 80 lb bags are too heavy for Katie to lift, so I put on my back brace and pushed through every bag! It was a great workout, to be honest ! Ten years from now, I would probably pay the ridiculous pump truck fees to get concrete where I need it instead... I'm not sure how long I will have my youth 😄

Thank you for your support! It is difficult to do this type of work on your own in the United States as well. Most areas restrict what you are allowed to do in terms of building a home, but we are in an undeveloped area with no restrictions. It's a lot of work but it helps make it more affordable. @GlobalDrifter1000 the mudmixer can mix a yard an hour. It took about 30 minutes to fill each piling, so it was totally doable in 2 days.
10:10 it might be better idea to weld a template for so many hoops and use thick wall 3ft pipe to get them squared. It's easier on your wrists and hands... just a tip: our local code requires for a hoop ends to overlap on corner (5 bendings) and to misalign hoop joints to avoid concrete cracking at one end line...overall, massive effort for just two of you.
