Finding your voice by overcoming speech disorders: Aslan Maleki at TEDxOU
Aslan Maleki is an Iranian born, Oklahoma-raised entrepreneur and a petroleum engineering junior at the University of Oklahoma. Growing up, he wasn't always as eager to speak. While being persistent at improving his personal speaking skills, he transformed his challenges with speaking into strengths. Aslan is currently a Kairos Society Global Fellow and a member of the Leaders Investment Club.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Been frequently stuttering for 25 years now. It kills me so much. It makes me afraid to talk and I never opened my mouth unless it is a necessity. It makes me feel less. It makes me feel I'm not normal. It makes me feel different from normal people to the point that I don't even understand myself. The thought is clear in my mind but I'm struggling to express it verbally. I hate being laughed at when stuttering tries to interrupt me from expressing myself. I feel helpless. I feel hopeless. Sometimes, I question myself why am I like this. I have never opened this to anyone (I know that they know that I stutter) and I've been thinking for therapy but it never came to realization. But in all of this, Lord I will praise you and worship you for everything. No disorder nor impairment can refrain me not to be grateful everyday of my life. To those who stutter out there, change the way you see yourself. You're God's masterpiece.

Dude I feel the same thing as you everyone thinks I’m a big introvert but I always want to talk to someone about something but I know I’ll just stutter and it controls me. I don’t understand myself at all. I don’t have any real interests and I just don’t know who I am. But i had to go to court and speak for a while and I prayed and prayed for days for me not to stutter while on the stand and I didn’t stutter a word the whole time I was there. So I know I can get past it. I just got to break through the mental barrier of not caring what someone else will think when they hear me stutter.

Exactly that's a great way to think about it I know Marilyn Monroe had a sutter as well
I have a hard time speaking sometimes. People at work don’t understand why I’m always excited to come into work. I know being a cashier isn’t the best job in the world but I love it because I get better at speaking everyday. Slowly I’m starting to speak English more fluently. The challenge is what excites me. I am not ashamed. The real shame would be to never try to improve and never have a social life.
God bless his courage and boldness..I too have a speech impediment, I dont stutter but i do have issues with articulation...I desire a career in financial services..and well, a business like that requires you to talk and network..its very hard to do that when the one thing you MUST do is the one thing you feel you CANT do..its a daily struggle that I hope one day to overcome
Very cool, love how he went from having this problem to speaking on a stage where many people who dont have this issue would be still scared to do
Speak Loudly Speak Proudly, Get out of your comfort zone.

He probably was the kind of kid who didn't like to repeat but wanted to be original. 💖😍 And he really is. His speech show it.
i struggled since i was a kid and still have a hard time. it affects my writing and reading comprehension. i have to work extra hard than my colleagues. i am a post-graduate.however, it took extremely hard work. my undergrad professors that i was from another country. i don't stutter just issues with comprehending and my mind is faster than my mouth. to pass the undergrad intro to english literature, i took my test with the international speaking class. it took me forever to write papers. it affects my job, especially facilitating meetings and writing emails.
I have problems talking to people and that's why I do public speaking and videos on my channel to force myself to get better at it, because talking to people isn't something we can get away with not doing. It's nice to see someone else that I can relate with.
As someone who has had Dysarthria since I was 5 years old. This video really does resonate with me as most of my life I have been practicing hard to correct my speech. I have made great efforts in my transparency of my words but it still hurts whenever someone comments how I sound like a special needs person.

Same. And Jesus Christ loves you 🙏
I really appreciate this.
This is my favorite video ever, it resonate with me. For a long time I have substitute words that had R in them with easier words. Just recently I started talking more, took Rachel's English to help me with my R's, took a online presentation course and other one to improve my speech. Because if I didn't then I wouldn't fulfill my dreams.

Thankfully r’s aren’t my issue since my name is Reed, but d’s b’s are my main issue. I do the same thing as your saying. I sometimes say other words in a sentence so I don’t stutter. Ordering food is a stressful time and I try and find different ways to order the food I want. Stuttering really messes up your social life but I’ve been trying to own the stutter and you won’t stutter as much

I'm curious if this man's unique way of speech is because of learning English as his 4th language or if he's hard of hearing or partially deaf.
