Well, you can definitely find fairies. There are three famous historical European families said to descend from fairies: firstly the Lusignans (of the Melusine fame), secondly the Spanish houses originating from the lords of Viscaya (said to be descended from Jaun Zuria, whose mother/father was an otherworldly creature according to some versions of the legend) - so houses de Haro, and possibly de Mendoza and others, and thirdly - descendants of Eadric the Wild and his fairy wife. I'm not counting the Luxembourgs, as their fairy legend is an obvious ripoff of the Lusignan one. Prince William will be the first European monarch with a claim to all three lineages.

Well, if you’re lucky like me, you have a grandad that has already done about 50 years of tracing your family history all the way back to the 6th century (on fathers fathers fathers father etc) and about 13th century in detail and then just so happens to upload it on to a hard drive only a week before his own death! I love my grandad for being such a legend in this way

I also discovered fascinating facts such as a distant relative of mine who had my name in the 14th century and was appointed Sheriff of Wessex by King Edward II. THANK YOU! Over the past year I’ve watched a great many of your videos and thoroughly enjoyed them. Watching this pair was also interesting but not something I thought applied to me. After all my family tree already stretched back 500 years without and royal connections. Then I started looking at ancestors I never had before, I’d always assumed my great-aunt would have noted anything of interest but apparently once she met the qualifications of the DAR she just stopped looking. I wondered if there were other stories, things I could write down for my nieces and nephews. I’m still in awe of the amazing troves of information available online these days! Having watched this pair of videos had me prepared for the moment I landed on a gateway ancestor. Having watched all the other videos gave me a better understanding of the flow of history that moved my ancestors from place to place. What I have to pass on now isn’t a list of names with no meaning, thanks to your videos it’s a picture of my family’s place in the world. I love that! However I now have a mental wishlist for future charts😂

That's a pretty powerful tool. I actually started my research on Geni, but didn't want to pay for a subscription, so moved onto FamilySearch and went as far as I could (back to royalty). Now I have a $1 3-month trial on Ancestry and am trying to flesh out the documentation. A person could literally spend years of their life doing this, so I like how Geni (and Wikitree) are trying to tie it all together.

Making your family tree is hard when you live in part of the world (read Balkans/Eastern Europe) where your country/nation was constantly "visited" by some suspicious men, calling themselves "invaders", who had some strange tendency to kill your entire family and destroy any documents about them and your whole nation. Also it does not help that my family is, by the legend, descent of, well.........mythological family.......whose existence isn't even proved. So yeah.........pretty hard to make that family tree.

But I cannot kind any information about it. I think my Chinese father is not closely related to any noble in China. They say the surname (Siu) is someone who work for the emperor of China. Fortunately, my girlfriend is Caucasian. She is 3/4 Slavic Russian adn 1/4 Caucasian. I could ask her more about her family. I hope she is related to the Romanov thus the Charlemagne. I'm pretty sure I am related to a Doge of Venice (not sure if that counts as royalty) So my grandpa always said we were related to the duke of Verona (Doge is more or less equivalent to Duke) Verona doesn't have a specific duke, but it is part of the Veneto and would be governed by Venice. So I start looking at the Doges and I find a guy who has my grandpa's surname and I found a painting...Where this Doge is missing half an eyebrow on the left side. So we have this weird genetic thing where someone every generation is missing that same half of that same eyebrow. Me, my mom, her father(grandpa), his father (great-grandfather) (that's the oldest photo we have) So I haven't been able to actually trace my tree to him, I feel like he is more likely than not, a relative.

Fascinating stuff. I've managed to get back a hundred years or so pre-Conquest on one branch (we then married 'in' to one of William the Conqueror's party, and kept our 'castle'!) and to Thomas Cranmer on another. Lots of Sirs, Barons, Lords, Ladies, and an Earl Marshall, but yet to find a direct link to royalty. All this for a family that has proudly described itself as 'working class' for a good six generations now.

But, so diligent research I have discovered many Royal lines in great Britain that have led to so many people that you mention on your charts. It is one thing to find your "royal roots", i.e. that you have ancestors who were royalty, and a completely different thing is to find if you are related or connected to a royal family tree. My ancestors were mainly Polish peasants and petty nobility, but it so happened that one of my grandmother's first cousins married a woman from a "good" noble family. Through this one connection, I was able to build up "my" family tree to over 6,000 people, including the royal houses of Poland, Russia, Austria, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, France, Scotland and England. As far as I can tell, none of them were among my ancestors. I have used MyHeritage so far, so I will try the Geni now. Maybe I'll have more luck.

The single most necessary attribute for tracing descent from royalty is ability to trace or connect to multiple lines well in excess of 250 years ago. If you are from say Slovakia, your records are going to peter out around 1800. Thus very unlikely to connect to nobility. In many other Eastern European countries records are even more sparse or inaccessible. OTOH, if you are say French Canadian, you can easily trace 1500 ancestors, hundreds of them in the 1600s, and great likelihood of connecting to one of the 30 or so early French Canadians with known royal descents. It’s all about getting a LOT of lines back to the 1600s.

This looks like a nice app, but the real roadblock to finding my ancestry is that on my dad's side I hit a brick wall after my grandparents, since many in their and my great-grandparents' generation were in Germany during the Third Reich, which means many from 2-3 generations back were killed in the Holocaust and even if not, it's very unlikely there are surviving records. I've been on a lot of geneaology sites and they all hit dead ends. Even if I don't connect to royalty, just knowing who my distant ancestors were would be really cool. Things aren't that much better on my mother's side since most of my family members immigrated fewer than 100 years ago so all that info is "in the old country". My background is Eastern European Jewish like the second guy said. I think my best hope is on my mother's side, which is descended from Austria-Hungary so maybe we'll get a Holy Roman or Hapsburg in there somewhere. Being descended from a family where most of your 3rd generation were genocide victims really sucks :(

Good video. Royal ancestry is not out of the ordinary for Americans of colonial descent. Gary Boyd Roberts has put out a new edition of his book called “The Royal Descents of 900 Immigrants” in two large volumes and they cover immigrants to the American colonies and Canada who were usually younger children of the landed gentry and aristocracy with pedigrees documented back to the medieval royal families of Europe. I’m sure you are familiar with it. I’m a genealogist and specialize in colonial lines of royal descent. I myself have 3 of these immigrants in my ancestry. On an average, about 60% or more of my clients with colonial lines have at least one ancestor who is listed in Roberts’ book we refer to in short “RD900” which I highly recommend for anyone interested in their possible royal lines.

I've found that once you get to anything like royalty, then you end up being related to a boat-load of kings and queens and other famous people (especially 1000 or so years ago). I think I'm up to 36 kings from all over Europe. It was pretty shocking at first but I suspect this is just the norm and not an exception. Interesting though.

I was building my tree on Ancestry and got to my 10th great grandfather in Maine in the late 1600s. When I looked at his profile hints, I had tons of connections to documents that were all published genealogy from 100+ years ago in which his family was traced back to Magna Carta signers, then to the Plantagenets, then even further to Charlemagne! So, my 24th great grandfather is King Henry III (who built the current Westminster Abbey), the 25th is his dad King John, the 26th great-grandmother is Eleanor of Aquitaine (a woman I have admired since English History class in college 35 years ago), and the 29h great-grandfather is William the Conqueror. Even later in the line has royal connections. My 17th great-grandfather had been killed at the Battle of Towton. His second wife (not my direct ancestor) was the mother of Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII, the first Tudor king.

As an almost 80 year old. And one who 'stumbles' along with a computer, this is what i found, by accident. I know the correct spelling for my old Polish name. I'm a 4th generation American/Pole. But, by accident, this is what I found a while ago. (first in Polish, W Jm Pan Stanislaw Rajkiewicz, Rotmistrz) Now, translated into American English,(Sir Nobleman, Stanislaw Rajkiewicz, Captain of Horse (Cavalry Captain). When a native born Polish friend translated this for me, I almost fell on the floor! I had no idea about any person in family with this kind of title. BTW, this went way back to 1663. Sorry for the long post.

My mom was doing our family tree and when she spotted "Stewart's" on my dad's side dating to the 1700s and earlier, she knew something was up. She tracked it down, and eventually got to King Robert II.. funny enough, my dad's a descendant of his son King Robert III, while my mom found a connection on her side to Robert II's son Robert, the Duke of Albany. We also found a direct link to Joan Beaufort in another line (also in my dad's side), through her second husband James the Black Knight of Lorn, which lead to John of Gaunt and obviously, Edward III of England.

Geni is problematic though. It allows anyone to edit anything and add info. My relative added my immediate family after I’d already done it, so now I’m my own step-sister.

I've been studying my paternal grandfather's family tree for more than a year. He was a Northern Portuguese and came from peasant family. I've reached the 17th century and only found... well... peasantry. The closest thing I've found so far "being related to nobility" was a 9th-Great Grandparent who was a Infantry Captain for the Portuguese Army.
