While this is our goal, everyone has influences. And it’s those influences that give us our repertoire and tool box for great singing.

So true. I started listening to my mom's record collection: Buddy Holley & Elvis mostly - then the Beatles, Elton John, Kiss (they were cool, then not cool). Then one day my grandmother brought home a bunch of records and, in that pile of vinyl, was this thing called Machine Head. When I first heard Highway Star I lost my mind completely. Then listening to AM radio back in the 70's and suddenly among all of the crap some guy started shouting: "Hey hey mama say the way you move," and it happened again. Then Tull, Rush, Alice Cooper & on through Frank Marino, Montrose, Metallica, Malmsteen, etc - anything I could get my hands on - all of that stuff kinda swirling around in my head created what it created, good or bad. Singing actually started because my band could never find someone who would bother to show up for practice..

I completely agree as a singer. Even more so as a guitarist. My trouble was that I started singing in a cover band and tried singing differently for each song if they were from different artists. But when it came to singing and writing my own songs, I was a little lost. Too many possibilities basically. What helped me most is not doing covers at all for a long while, only jamming and coming up with my own material and my band was accommodating with a "do whatever you want, you're the singer" attitude. This for several years has really helped me combine or mold all those influences and internalize them enough that when I sing, it just sounds like me for the most part, not like someone else. (I'm also an actor who can imitate easily, I do voice overs, so I think that made it a little more difficult)

I didn't start learning guitar until I was 15, and by then cassette tapes were becoming popular. So I ever actually tried to learn a guitar song directly off of my turntable. Instead, I'd record the record to a cassette tape. And being an electronics guy, I extended the motor speed control to the outside of my portable tape player. I never thought of significantly slowing it down to hear a lick, but I used it to "tune" the recording to match the pitch of my guitar that way I could keep it tuned relative to A 440 and not have to re-tune to every recording. With today's digital recordings, that's no longer an issue to depend on proper playback speed to be on pitch. I just turned 53 last month so we're only about a year apart and I can definitely relate to a lot of your stories having grown up in the same era. And you have some cool stories! I enjoy listening to them as much as I do the instructional content of your videos and it makes them fun to watch. And it's incredible how technology has advanced in our lifetime. In 82 I was "drawing" pictures with lines on my Apple II computer screen in hi-res graphics with the "Hplot" command with a choice of 16 colors. And the only sound you could get is to click the speaker so I wrote a subroutine in 6502 assembly language (because Apple basic wasn't fast enough) to play notes by repeatedly toggling the speaker fast in a double-nested loop varying the delay to change frequency (pitch). It took converting every note to a digital value to input into the subroutine. Back then, I never dreamed I'd see the day where we could actually watch a music video on a computer in HD with CD quality stereo sound. And I'll be utilizing this technology to learn to sing as one of the newest members of KTVA. I just bought the download version of your course during your Black Friday sale. I'm hoping to accomplish something that's eluded me for the 38 years I've been interested in music, learning to sing on key and without my voice giving out after about 3 songs. I've been at it for less than a week so far, but I'm starting to feel a little more endurance and longer sustain from the breathing techniques and exercises. Keeping the chest expanded and getting the full deep breath from the diaphragm definitely seems to be the key to it. Like you always say in your videos, it's like the engine that drives our car.

Great Video Ken! I too remember what it was like trying to learn songs back in the day. With me it was Metallica, GnR, Maiden...etc etc. And I remember being 10yrs old playing to the cassette tapes over and over and over again, desperately trying to burn each part into my head. One major tool this gave me was that at a very early age, my timing had become outstanding because I had been playing along with every guitar hero I could think of, along actual produced albums, for years. And as much as I wanted to be Slash, or Vai, Wylde or Gilbert at that age, later on I could see traits of each guy in my own playing all mixed into something different! So you're 100% bang on. As far as singing goes, that's something I've only been attempting for a couple years. I've a long way to go yet, but just in the same way as all those years of guitar playing, I'm starting to hear my influences coming out in my vocals. Little bits at a time mind you, but nevertheless it's a cool thing when you can listen back to yourself and say "Hey, that one line had a small tremolo I wasn't really trying to do, but damn I can hear Bruce Dickinson!" Lol! You've a fantastic personality Ken, Keep it up man!

Ken, I loved this. I'm a drummer (primarily) I've worked hard at my chosen instrument, but I don't just get inspiration or idea's from other drummers. People have a tendency to separate rhythm from melody, I humbly digress from that misplaced musical assumption. Melody has to have the framework of rhythm to showcase itself. I listen to vocalists, pianists, bass players, guitarists, horn players...etc. Everyone has something to offer regardless of background, instrumentation, or even, dare I say, yet to be developed talent. Drums and rhythm can also, conversely infleunce how a singer or other musician phrases a particular musical moment as you so eloquently put it. You have inspired me to put together a KZread channel to start this dialogue. Thanks Ken! Hope to meet and perhaps jam together sometime.

Really good advice that make sense, Ken! 😊 I started to sing about 4 years ago. (I'm 44 now) The thing I love to do, where I find most of my inspiration, is to aim for the impossible. Trying to sing songs I most likely never going to be able to sing. Songs that demands different kind of technical agility. Though I try many different styles, I think that songs from musicals have the widest spectrum of techniques, often in the same song. That's a lot of fun. The journey is my goal. It's really nice to notice small improovements along the way. I'm not going to be anyone known for my singing. For that I should've started 30 something years ago. I'm going to be more towards a decent karaoke-level singer instead. But that keeps me going 😊

Sorry for that negative vibe, but i hope you will understand, cause you're also an artist and a big soul humanist, i suppose) SO, hope one day i can afford to by your singing course and maybe even better been able to see you alive and take a few lessons face to face)) That is really The Dream that worth it..) Well, huge text , sorry for that, hope you'll not depressed or have any sorrow about that. Just felt you like my soulmate and feel fine to share this thoughts with you. Just to let you understand what influence you have already did on people. P.S. REALLY sorry for my english, i'm on my way to get it) and greetings and wishing all the goods again! Bless you! I wish I had thought of the slowing-the-record-down technique in the 70's! I just ruined every record by continually lifting the arm then putting it back (never in the right place, of course). So much easier to learn now, thanks to technology and videos of people like you! Thanks to your videos, I can now listen to myself and say "that doesn't suck!"

I love this Video from you 🤩I appreciate your videos! (Side note: as a singer and music teacher myself , you have been one of my KZread Role Models as a voice teacher since I found your channel earlier this year. It’s exciting to find that instrumentalists or vocalist that you aspire to sound like because THEY’re awesome & feeling that with a little practice you can and will be just as good as them if you put forth the effort. I enjoy re learning and learning other techniques from great instructors, much appreciated 😊 I fought with this question from a young age until a few years ago. I was shy growing up and always wondering 💭 how am I supposed to know how I sound If I don’t have something or someone to compare it too. Growing up in the 80’s-90’s in the south *some might know the comparison, judgemental, inner critic , gossip, mentality that can instill disbelief in self, & coming from a very southern religious, great family It had become habit to question who I was or what does my voice really sound like. Fear of being talked about or judged that I shouldn’t express or be confident outwardly(boasting) because being humble was better, all that was a load of you know what. Once I appreciated that I had the will power and ability to sing like my role models” I realized how horrible I had been to myself, down playing my talent my entire life. As a teenager I knew I loved soulful voices like Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys so I was always singing along with them,(& slowing the record as well, just to get that right note. 🤣🤣 I heard a Marissa Peer on YT one day day say that artist that have No self esteem but believes their talent will most likely have more success than an artist that has SELF ESTEEM but fails to believe in their talent or talents. It made me appreciate many years I spent ruminating with music and having a talented musical family. Thank you for displaying your passion and inspiring so many My PA: is Own your skills/talents, Thank you Ken!! Happy holidays. Sorry for being long winded, just very grateful🙏🏽❤️👏🏽

I think Ken has said all one can about this subject. This is not like guitar or singing lessons, where one can apply a methodical and measurable approach to improving over time. It's much more mysterious than that. He's right when he says you need to absorb as many influences as you can, and have those colors on your palette. But, ultimately, I think developing a unique (and pleasing) style comes from the same place inspiration comes from. It's a soul expression thing. In a way, the stars have to align for you. But, one thing is for sure - it will never happen if you don't put in the work and really pour your heart into what you do.

I really know the voice of Bruce Dickinson, Ian Watkins, Dan Marsala, Joacim Cans, Tony Kakko, Tyrone Wells, Matt Bellamy, James LaBrie (somewhat chronologically). Of course there are a bunch of other singers too, these are the ones I know the most. I'm not imitating anymore, but learning. I haven't found my own style yet, but started to "mix" the ones I know, so I may get a more unique sound. No, I can't scream and sing together. :D As I'm practicing the basics I think I start to feel my style more and more.

Well, I like the idea that we can learn from different music personalities to develop our own voice. Are you sure sir?? I will try. You mean that I should sing songs of different singers. My name is Ashwani and I am from India, and India has quite a lot of different versatile singers who are representing different culture. I doubt sometimes and feel that I sometimes i copy their style, is this the right thing??? Example - I hit high C3 in warm up but usually doesn't happen when sing my fav songs. My voice constraints me to sing those songs. Please suggest me, I follow you channel more than anybody else.
