Actually that is an amazing question, and one I have had in the back of my mind, but never spent time exploring. It won't work with any three points because the three points have to form a parabola. So if you used (2,1) (2, 3) (5,7) for instance y = ax^2+bx+c would not work however I think x = ay^2 + by + c would work for those three points. You have me thinking. ... Great question. If you stacked three points it would not work in either case (2, 1) (2, 3,) (2, 4). would not work, or any three collinear points would not work. I don't have time right now to explore much more. But what if the three points lie on a circle? What about three points that lie on a hyperbola or trig function? ohhhh so much we could explore with this seemingly silly question. I love watching different instructors/teachers/professors show the steps in working more complicated algebra topics but I wonder if too much time is spent on the basic arithmetic. If someone is learning algebra and doesn’t get eliminating or moving variables and constants in the solution process then maybe they should be watching basic math videos first. It really slows down the instruction. Just an observation.
@danielschaben

I really only make these videos for my students. They will watch them mainly as more practice for those that need it. A way of studying for the test. I only threw them up here as a free place to store them back in 2010. Had no idea that anyone else would even find them valuable. Wish I had time to make more.

in this method. Yes.
this will help m PSMT thanks pookie
I love watching different instructors/teachers/professors show the steps in working more complicated algebra topics but I wonder if too much time is spent on the basic arithmetic. If someone is learning algebra and doesn’t get eliminating or moving variables and constants in the solution process then maybe they should be watching basic math videos first. It really slows down the instruction. Just an observation.

I really only make these videos for my students. They will watch them mainly as more practice for those that need it. A way of studying for the test. I only threw them up here as a free place to store them back in 2010. Had no idea that anyone else would even find them valuable. Wish I had time to make more.

Consider yourself lucky. I've seen 30 year olds cry doing this stuff. If your a 6th grader and have a handle on it. I expect nothing less than you creating your own space company and the next mission to Europa (one of Jupiter's moons) :) Thanks for the comment and good luck. What starts out at drudgery could turn into the next thing that changes the world. You never know.

You could've just divided the other equation by 3 so that the b would have no coefficients

It's a lot to remember, just remember that showing work helps. I hardly ever downgrade for silly errors. If your logic is sound, I am usually pretty happy.
