Amoroso hasn't been the standard roll in the region for about 20 years. Aside from maybe Lee's and Slack's, only a few pizza shops and corner delis still use Amoroso rolls. Most of the "soft" rolls are from Liscio's bakery these days, and the crusty seeded rolls are typically from either Sarcone's or Carangi.

The secret to a great cheesesteak is the roll. It has to be extremely fresh and sturdy enough to stand up to all the beef drippings, but yet not too tough. I also think that provolone is the best cheese option.

Obviously provolone! 💯 I suppose if you get a cheesesteak regularly, it's nice to have options to prevent getting burned out on just one cheese flavor, but if and when I ever visit Philadelphia to try their cheessteaks, I would want to savor the beef. I already frikn know what Cheese Whiz tastes like, and I've had plenty of cheesesteaks from other places where I live. Provolone complements the steak without being overly loud, letting the meat speak to it's quality and preparation. I could be wrong, but thats currently my (admittedly non-expert) opinion.

Pat's and Geno's are the last places I would go for a steak when I come into town. I always hit Dalessandro's. John's Roast Pork is the clear winner. Not too fine, not too thick steak. Cheese and onions are mixed through out so you get some in every bite. The bun isn't too thick. All the ratios are in harmony and you get that unctuous, juicy, savory bite - this is the single most important factor. Also, onions are always a must. Optional, but highly recommended, would be hot peppers for that acidity and heat.

Angelo’s is by far the best steak in the city these days imo, but Dalessando’s and Tony & Nick’s are also excellent. I personally think Tony & Nicks has the best bread out of everybody (except Angelo’s of course), but they cook their meat on such low temp it never has that great maillard. Daleddandro’s is the opposite- their meat and onions are cooked to perfection but the bread doesn’t quite keep up. But that’s the beauty of Philly steaks!

One note about Pat's, is the sandwich back in the 1930s was a steak sandwich. In the 1940s, one of his employees added provolone cheese to the sandwich which created the first cheesesteak. This cheesesteak quickly became very popular.
I’ve had a few different cheesesteaks in Philly and Johns roast pork was my favorite. The actual roast pork sandwich was equally amazing. I live in Pittsburgh and we don’t have any sandwiches that compare.

If that first spot is right off the highway, I think that was the Tony Luke's I went to back in 2010ish and it was phenomenal . Definitely looks different though. I've never seen them be stingy with the Whiz cheese though so that was weird. Geno and Pat's is a total tourist trap. Less food, and more expensive. Just go to Tony Luke's and you'll never be disappointed.
Enjoying this series but slightly fearing for Harry’s chances of surviving the series without exploding.
6 months ago some friends and I did a philly cheesesteak tour, and we hit up 8 places in one day, reviewing and rating each. Philadelphian approved. You guys picked the best spots. Pat’s and Geno’s are tourist attractions so you have to hit them, but trust me, no Philadelphian puts it as their favorite. I’m a Dellasandro’s man or Johns Roast Pork man. Too hard to pick.

More please - love this format and you guys are awesome - great bants.....Best Hotdog, Best Tacos, Best Shawarma, Best Fried chicken would be good if not done yet already.
Best cheese, imo, for a cheesesteak is Cooper Sharp. Pat's, Geno's are tourist traps my friend. I prefer John's, but Dalessandro's is right up there.
You guys really need to spread these over more days so that you can finish these sandwiches 😂
This series is proving to be fantastic, I hope there's at least 90 more episodes
Yesssss! Please record more of these! 🥪

I LOVE a great cheesesteak. The second location looked great. I prefer the meat to be finely chopped, with white American cheese AND wiz. Prefer the sesame bun as well. Needs to be soft yet chewy and very stable. No wet bread.
This series was awesome! Definitely my favorite so far. Next season has got to be Chicago

John’s Roast Pork, Dalessandro’s and Max’s are some of the big names but you people should definitely give Angelo’s Pizzeria, Gilben’s Bakery and Chubby’s Steaks. If your in South Jersey try Donkey’s Place or Carmen’s
Amoroso is the standard roll, another alternative for seeded rolls is Sarcone's bakery. It about 3/4 of a block south on 9th street from Pat's steaks. They are famous for there tomato pies also. I believe one of the two (Geno's or Pat's) uses Sarcone's. But Amoroso's has a (or use to) have a industrial bakery around 54th & Haverford. They are a nationwide brand.

It’s pretty much next door to Ralph’s and Angelo’s on 9th between Catherine and Fitzwater, the opposite end of the Italian market.

Sorry about the second post....Benjamin Franklin is buried with his wife Deborah at Christ Church 340 N 5th St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 (corner of 5th & Arch.) This is the Old City section of Center City Philadelphia. You can view the grave site from the street. It's the grave with all the pennies on it. Why? One of Franklin's most famous adages, “A penny saved is a penny earned,” has, over time, compelled thousands of visitors to toss pennies onto his marble grave marker at the Church Christ Burial Ground at 5th & Arch streets for luck. Also it's traditional for engaged couple to visit and both toss a penny, if it hits and stays on top you'll have a great marriage. Yes my wife and I visited and both got the penny to stay on top, that was 45 years ago and we are going strong!
Really glad to see Harry liked the Pat's. It is by far my favorite steak in the city -- love those big chunky slices of meat.

Please do Texas or Kansas City Barbecue next.
John's Roast Pork always wins for me. But honorable mention for Angelo's for the Sarcone roll. And Ishkabibbles on South St.
I was in NYC 3 months ago we we drove down to Philly for the day. We did stop at Pat's and it was pretty good... but its the only cheese-steak I've had from Philly. I kind of wish we went to a few other places too :D
Keep going gents. We dig your chemistry, great contrast of personalities. My first time in Philly I hit up both Pat’s and Geno’s one after the other. I was all-in for Pat’s, Whizz, no onions. Next time I’m going straight to John’s but for the pork sandwich.

Why not go to John's with a friend? Order a steak and a pork sandwich, and share halves...
John's Roast Pork, Angelos, Cafe Carmellas, Del Rosi Co. , Barry's .... and everybody else.
I'm sad I moved out of the area before ever trying John's Roast Pork. But this is a pretty good compilation for a foreigner to experience. Dale's is easily my 2nd favorite after SQ Philip's which was sadly not visited here. Also, I would have recommended to visit Jim's on South but seeing that this was posted 1 month ago means that Jim's hasn't fully rebuilt yet. I know they had a fire not too long ago so it was just bad timing. Also, shoutout to going to Tony & Nick's, that's the one place I remember from my childhood going to that I forgot the name of. I remember my grandfather and my uncle both taking me there. I think my grandfather took me there when I was super young that I vaguely remember that being my first cheesesteak. Haven't had them in decades but I remember them being a proper joint to go to. For journalism's sake though, you definitely need to revisit and go to Jim's when they are finished rebuilding that way you can go across the street to Lorenzo's pizza and get yourself a slice to pair with a Jim's steak and wrap it in the pizza slice for a classic Philly Taco. Also, go to SQ Philip's, Gooey Louie's, Woodrow's (they have a special truffle whiz - not a fan, myself), Angelo's, Joe's, Tony Luke's (my least favorite), Steve's Prince of Steaks, Cleavers, Sonny's, Shank's, Max's, Ishkabibble's 1& 2, and of course DiNic's Pork & Beef for a full complete trip amongst the giants of cheesesteaks!
More of this please!!! Like I’m curious to see if you guys do BBQs because those will be the hefty lot to consume lol

Come on, Pats & Genos is a tourist trap! Which is why y’all didn’t like them 😂 Still appreciate the Philly love ❤ Dalessandros is my go to fav, even if they’re out of the way!

From an Irish guy Dalessandros looked the nicest to me I agreed with the video that the very fine cut steak has a better chance of blending well with the cheese I feel like that's what makes a great Cheesesteak when the cheese and steak are blending well Genos for example too thick wouldn't blend well but Dalessandros you can tell that's perfectly blended steak and cheese

Hi,New subscriber here, Your dish looks delicious. ❤
I went to college about 30 minutes from Philly and Dalessandro's was my number 2. Surprised Chubby's wasn't visited as it's my personal favorite and the place I went to the most when I'd go downtown on weekends. Cleavers is also very good and worth a try. The only other place I've had in Philly was Pat's and it was my least favorite of them. I live about 2 hours from Philly now and there's still some good places around here, but nothing beats Chubby's.
