Thankyou Sam. That was a hearth-warming, mind-prompting and physically exciting new years greeting! Apart from the global & national challenges I have been navigating, the year began with a local weather event that is bordering on "natural(?) disaster"! You have been a sane & spirited voice for social and spiritual evolution during my now 9-yr-long sober life, and for that im extremely grateful. I have (on numerous occasions) eagerly approached your alluringly attractive app' WAKING UP, but I've backed away every time because I've been living in quite contentedly in a state of voluntary poverty, and cannot afford to subscribe. I have never been a 'beggar', but you kind offer of financial relief for low-income people seeking membership has rekindled my amply twigged curiousity! When it comes to attracting people to a fuller, more fruitful and spiritually focussed life, you are the most prolific and generous "bread-crumb droppers" I've ever encountered. So I look forward to consuming more of your nourishing insights and inspiriations via & within you WAKING UP platform. Much heart-felt gratitude Sam. ☝️😊✌

Happiness is pretty simple. Here's how I'm happy. 1) Found a good woman. Married her. Spend my time thinking how I can make her happy. 2) I was lucky, and got a great set of parents. Spend my time being a good son. 3) I have a few friends who I really enjoy. 4) Chose a profession that is satisfying. 5) Have found a few hobbies I enjoy. - I don't usually think in terms of 'happiness'. I find the word 'content' is far more accurate. How content am I, if I won a big lottery tomorrow, there would be very little that would change in my life. Achieving content, to me, means your DAILY existence is satisfying. There are a couple of big 'pluses' to this. First, achieving daily contentment doesn't require a whole lot of money. Nor does is require to achieve some pinnacle of greatness (like winning the Superbowl or something). This is to say daily contentment is easily obtainable. Second, daily contentment is along the lines of 'the simple life is a more rewarding life'.

Thanks Sam. A recent podcast with another reasoned voice made a point similar to one here. Delaying things for a supposed or hoped for better or perfect time sounds a bit like waiting for different circumstances in order to feel happiness. Very useful. It does seem that things will get worse before they improve, but one thing that never fails to keep my hope up is that evil has an accidental side effect. The pushback against It creates marvellous things and people who otherwise would not become who or what they are in a perfect world. I imagine oysters would chose an irritation free lifetime, but if that's not possible, at least you sometimes get pearls out of it.

I've watched this video several times and I am utterly astonished by how heavily Sam's views are borrowed from Buddhism! Consider the 1st of the Buddha's 4 Noble Truths: Suffering (unsatisfactory-ness) Sam gave the example of -and I paraphrase here- consumerism/materialism not giving us fulfillment and contentment. Gosh there's so much in this video that is Buddhism that I almost cannot list them all...The most glaring ones are Meditation, Impermanence ( a huge Buddhist tenet!), Self as an Illusion (non-duality), and Waking up!!.....and more... He also uses (in his own words ) the 3 Poisons of Buddha-Dharma: Attachment, (desire), anger/hatred and ignorance. Love and Compassion: While these are of course universal in nature and do not belong to any one religion, these two especially are prominent tenets of Buddhism. I could go on, but I'll spare listeners for the sake of brevity.

Toward the end of his life, George Carlin seemed to surrender. He had begun to look on the terrible daily events that happened around the world as fantastic entertainment. I am sixty-seven years, and with each that passes, I lower my expectations for humanity. 2024 promises to be a highly entertaining year. With good fortune, I will greet again in 2025, only slightly more cynical, but highly entertained.

I loved George Carlin and it kinda broke my heart that he became so very cynical towards the end of his life. Humankind tends to evolve (socially speaking) at a frustratingly slow pace, peppered with setbacks along the way, but hope (however feeble) should be cherished

If I could reach out across the ocean, I would say Happy New Year to you and your family and to thank you, Sam Harris, and your colleagues of high standards and lofty intellect and with especially fond memories of 'Hitch', whom so many of us miss dearly and who seemed to take the standard idea of debate to a new level and most of all because you really have made this world a better place for all of us. Now; how you can live with yourself for doing that is a mystery---of course----I am kidding----but thanks for your thoughts and ideas and pointing out the sort of details that can make people see through the smoke and mirrors we have been conditioned into thinking is really the way it is. We start this year where we live 2,000 kilometers from Kiev world with President Putin’s charming words ringing in our heads that he is going to pound and punish the Ukrainians harder than ever in 2024. Christmas Cheer comes in so many colors these days…

I agree with what Harris is saying . For me I continue to work on having as many beliefs that can be justified my evidence and reason , run through a buffer of appropriate skepticism. I will fail often at this goal . I am challenges by my biases that always interfere in with my objectives of living a factually based life

I have discovered that living your life to fit into the concept of time is to limit the fullness of your life. Now I'm not saying time isn't important or doesn't have relevance in our lives, we all know the world works on time. But you don't have to live your life strictly within the concept of time. Certain parts, yes, but everything? No. You can separate what's important from what is routine. Living your life as experiential existence allows you to move time to the background. It becomes less important than the experience itself. So, I have chosen to look at life as not the time we are given but the experiences we are given. Good or bad. That is essentially what life is, moving from one experience to the next. Time is linear, experience is fluid. For example, the expression time flies when you're having fun is, in my opinion, a fallible observation. Time neither speeds up or slows down, it's how the particular experience is making you feel that allows you push time to the background so as not to allow it to interfere with your good experience. You forget about time and that is freeing. The same goes for bad experiences, time appears to slow down and makes the pain worse, when really it is your unwillingness or inability to confront the issue head on. Time doesn't care if you are having a good time or a bad time, it doesn't speed up or slow down, it is our perception of the experience that causes the disconnect. Living one's life as an experience is far more rewarding than waiting for an expiration date where you feel you have to cram as much into it as you can. Just enjoy the moments you're given, learn the lesson it's teaching, and stop worrying about how many you will have. Quality over quantity.

I was wondering if you have ever heard of the KZread channel Dr John Campbell. I left a comment about of my mom is sick and refuses to see a real doctor. Instead she takes homeopathic remedies prescribed by her naturopath. That are doing absolutely nothing and she is not improving yet she wants to believe so badly. And what i was met with in that comment section was not, your mom should see real medical advice, but rather good for her. She has her reasons to be skeptics about the medical establishment. And that I should respect her choices. I am shocked at the level of ignorance. It’s one of the reasons I watch this channel. Thank you Sam you have been the voice of reason when it feels like I’m surrounded by egotistical people who know it all.

Whenever I hear people talking about things such as meditation (and religiousity) that purport to increase happiness, i look at the people and see if they actually appear to be happier. I can't say that i have ever found it to be so. I see that people get a purpose out of commiting to some form of activity and community, but that's about it. As for mindfulness, it certainly is great to try to be self aware of your emotions and how your brain works, but there is a problem in using your own brain to know how itself is operating. I get the impression that this form of knowledge about oneself can be self deceptive and it reminds me of people who think they become really interesting or better when drunk, but to anyone sober they are as boring as ever. I guess my conclusion is there is a limit to how much you can know yourself, and one of the big things is to know that.
