Finding My Transylvanian Saxon Roots in Saschiz, Romania!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We travel to Saschiz, Romania where friends and villagers show us how my grandfather and his ancestors lived for hundreds of years. We visit the fortified Lutheran church where he was baptized, the house where he grew up, and the cemetery in which his family is buried. We stay in a wonderful local pensiunea. All of this in a valley of incredible beauty, just 20 km from Sighisoara. Filmed in August 2022.

Loved seeing this video - wish I could have seen the church records when I visited in 2006, but we were only in the village for a few hours. Was told they had been moved to county seat.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful video, glad you found your roots. I grew up in Keisd in the 80s, now live in the US. Always special to see pictures and videos from where i used to run around.

Hi Hans - my gf, John Grell, was born in Keisd in 1881. Came to Cleveland in 1905/6. Looking for Grell relatives. He had four sisters Dorothea married to a John Scheel, Sarah m. Andy Zekeli, Katherine m. John Fograscher, and Susanna, m. Rudolf Gutkowski. Susanna is only one I have dates on. Andy Scheel, son of Dorothea and John, came to Cleveland in 1922 There is another Grell family here that came at the same time with my grandfather, but we have never been able to confirm a connection. My grandfather had connections with cousins in the Canton, Ohio area, but can't confirm that. Can you help fill in any gaps? Visited Keisd in 2006, but the pastor said all the records had been sent to the county seat in Schassburg. Noticed many of my family names on the plaques in the church, listed by house number.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. My parental grandmother's family was from Ernea, Sibiu, Romania (formerly Szaszernye, Austria-Hungary). I hope to make a similar trip as yours. I'd like to pick your brain regarding how you went about planning it.

An interesting video, my girlfriend's family was also Transylvanian Saxons but they all have immigrated to Germany in the early 90's, and AFAIK they don't have any family members anymore in Romania that they're still in touch with. Greetings from South Africa!

So heartworming to see you looking for your roots. Your ancestors would be very proud of you for not been forgotten. I would love to know what you felt walking the same ways they walked once. Greetings from a transilvanian saxon.

It was wonderful to wake up in the same place that they had for hundreds of years. I would love to go back and learn more. Thank you for your comment and for watching!
