Finding More Power With A High-Performance Tune-Up - Horsepower S1, E8

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We head under the hood of our 1991 stock Pontiac Firebird after a baseline dyno run to give it some performance upgrades. A high-performance tune-up including upgrades to the manifold, ignition and more will give this car power within a $10,000 budget. Then, we hit the road and visit a hot rod hangout in Orlando, FL.

Sure love these old episodes with Chuck and Joe. Reminds me of my youth watching these guys. Those days and guys were the best.

The 80's and 90's truly were the dark days for performance. I love the comments from people who simply do not understand that there were no options back then.

That 70 Trans-AM looks badass brother and it looks a million times better than that red 80s Firebird that has all the cheap plastic cladding on it.

$900 for 20 HP!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Money well spent!!! Yes! Indeed! 😂😂😂😂 The sad thing is, I remember watching this crap as a kid and thinking the same thing!!! 1978-2002, performance was a joke!!

those tbi manifolds where known to be a stock replacement. Had one on my 1992 5.7 TBI motor with headers, chip and cat back exhaust. Little to no gain.

Yup, TBI engines are a turd, but they were built with longevity and driveability in mind. Mostly any aftermarket parts made for these were worthless, a waste of money. Too bad they weren't at least a 4 barrel tbi setup from the factory, but at that point, you may as well swap over to the TPI setup. Probably not much better, but these were archaic injection systems.

Oldie but goodie. Firebird would be a swap out today but nothing wrong with keeping the little 305 for cruising

The problem with Pontiacs were cast cranks and weak rods. Only the 389 and 421 had forged cranks.

I know the 89 Mustang 5.0 put out 225HP and 300lbs/ft of torque. I'd say that's a little more than these TBI setups which weren't obviously designed for HP.

@@sherlockholmes60 300 hp is still a decent amount of power. My 5.3L Silverado is plenty quick. But people can barely handle 300 and would probably kill themselves with one of the modern street cars with real high power. Coyote Mustang, Corvette, Hellcat, etc.
