Stripping Down a '97 Thunderbird To Make It a 427 Sleeper - HorsePower S15, E4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

HorsePower builds the epitome of a "sleeper" car. They take a drab, mundane 1997 Thunderbird, remove it's stock 4.6 engine to replace it with a 427 cubic inch beast. It's project also involving transmission, rear end and suspension upgrades. However, the exterior will be "plain Jane" all the way.

That ring gear pattern was terrible, the heel/toe was off and you were taking the pattern off the flank side when your desired pattern is supposed to be on the face side and look like a small oval circle that has left a hint of yellow paint in the center of the gear tooth. Rule of thumb face/flank=move the pinion (different thickness shim behind the pinion bearing. Heel/toe=move the carrier bearing shims keeping in mind to have a bit of case pressure on the carrier bearings.

What a great project car! Love that style of T-Bird. My dad had a 77 and he was very proud of it as it was his first nice car. He passed away in Feb of 1980. I know he would have hated the early 1980's T-Bird. He would have loved this 1997. I know he would have bought this streamlined design. Making this bird a sleeper is one fantastic idea. Sure wish Ford would bring a version of this design back. They should consult you folks on the build.

This is cool to see. In 2008 I began a build on a 1990 t-bird. I used the same exact rear end components. I built a C6 transmission. And built a 347 stroker with a dart racing block SCAT and Eagle internals with SRP pistons and everything balanced . Then installed a Kennebell supercharger and 60# injectors.I have yet to put a proper ECM in the car and tune it in like it should be . Even without optimal tune the car is fast. Really looking forward to seeing the end result on your build .

So rad to see this. I own a '96 and swapped in a GM L33, T56, Borg Warner 76 mm turbo, tubular k member with wisefab steering angle kit out front, holley terminator x, 4.11 gears and welded diff, KW coilovers, simple cage, a lot of weight reduction and now it's a 3190 pound 636 wheel hp drift car and NOBODY knows what it is. Most people dont realize how amazing the car actually is. Basically a longer, uglier mustang with IRS. Shit that dog will hunt in my book. Most SN95 parts bolt right on but the fact it's wheelbase is quite a bit longer than a mustang allows it to be much, much more forgiving and fun to drift. I built my first drift car at 17, I'm 32 now. I've built 13 drift cars and I'm by far the happiest with this one. I'm saving for a voodoo engine and a quaife sequential right now. Itll be the only one in the US.

I did. GROSS! When making an extreme ratio change, sometimes the pinion shim doesn't work. I take the original bearing, and with a die grinder, open up the center so it slide easily on the new pinion. Doing that allows you to change the pinion depth shim without pressing the bearing on/off repeatedly.

I caught that too....except for being typical unibody construction this bird has nothing in common at all with a fox bird / mustang. The script writers dropped the ball ..... in the hot rod business they should be fully aware of the fox legacy in mustangs....called the 32 ford of our generation. I build fox thunderbirds....just on a hobby level though. Smaller 500lbs lighter and shares mustang power parts but alot nicer car ......( just my opinion ) .......whats not to luv. Still I'd give my eye teeth for this MN-12......its insanely clean under neath. Nothing here in ontario canada looks like that after 22 years on the road.
