Finding Fabulous Quartz Crystals in Mt. Ida, Arkansas (Sweet Surrender Quartz Crystal Mine)

We visit the Sweet Surrender Quartz Crystal Mine, just north of Mt. Ida, Arkansas, known as the Quartz Crystal Capital of the World. Chase and I spend the day searching through the layers of shale, surface collecting float crystals and extracting quartz from pockets littering the mine.
This mine is famous for its Double-Terminated Quartz Crystals, and for the iron staining that coats much of the quartz from this formation.

    So how do you think Sweet Surrender compares to Judy's dig on Fisher Mountain? I went to Judy's with my dad last summer, and it was great! I liked having the whole digsite to ourselves: it was absolutely peaceful up there on top of the mountain, and we took home a few nice crystals and plates, but we didn't find anything as large as you're finding here. Have you tried Wegner's or Ron Coleman mine? Those seem to be pretty popular, too.

    I've been to just about all the mines (and some of them a few times). I have had different results on different trips. The best cluster I have ever found was at the Sweet Surrender several years ago, but recently did not have similar results there. I visited Coleman's years ago and found smaller points, but a more recent trip yield several ultra-clear points that were impressive in size by comparison. I have only been to Fisher Mtn Mine one time, and you are absolutely right---the view is worth the price of admission (even if a person didn't find anything!). Wegner's yielded small clear points in abundance in the tailings. I am planning to go back to Twin Creek soon, had a very nice experience there. I hope to produce a new video about that upcoming visit.

    Amazon. I buy Oxalic Acid in 5 or 10lb bags. Be careful with it. HCL I buy at local hardware stores....be super careful with HCL.

    Does oxalic work better than iron out? I just use lukewarm water and iron out... if it's PA material I can put it in a crockpot on low...can't do that with herkimers because of Inclusions and enhydros. I've never used oxalic though, only muriatic and I feel that it etched the crystals.

  • @rockhoundingusa8207

    I have used all of them. It seems that Iron Out works a bit better on Mt. Ida staining, but some will need to be cooked with muriatic. I have never encountered any etching using HCL, I'm not even sure that's possible (chemically). Thanks for dropping by.

  • @kylebayliff1712

    Btw, I've had pretty good results using powdered "iron out" instead of oxalic acid. Have you tried it before? It's definitely safer than the oxalic acid method.

  • @rockhoundingusa8207

    @rockhoundingusa8207

    I have used several methods...the heated Hydrochloric Acid bath, Oxalic soaking, and Iron Out. All of them have benefits and all of them have dangers. Iron Out is the safest, but still requires caution. Heated HCL is faster but caustic, Oxalic is aggressive but tends to discolor the matrix (which can be remedied with repeated pure water soaking), and Iron Out is slower (and can be pricey) but it works well. Have you found similar results?

  • @kylebayliff1712

    I've avoided using HCl or oxalic acid. I live in an apartment complex, so acids are probably not the best idea. I've treated my stuff with powdered iron out out on the balcony because I know if it spills, it's not going to hurt anyone like the acids would. I've gotten pretty good results with a few cycles of iron out (I usually have to do at least three cycles, so yes, it's slower and I wind up using up quite a bit of the powder), but I've wondered if the result from oxalic acid would be that much better in the end.

    @@kylebayliff1712 oxalic is less expensive, and can work faster if heated...but I would not do that in an apartment complex.

    I have used all of them. Heated HCL seems to work faster, but people can get great results with Oxalic or Super Iron Out, but you need more patience.
