Finding Exhaust System Leaks

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I show you how to inspect your exhaust system for leaks.
I also show the common leak points from the front to the rear and explain why something as simple as an exhaust leak can cause your engine to run rich and your catalytic converter to overheat and fail.

My exhaust leak was under the header shield. Sounded like it was coming from expansion armored section. turned out to be #3 pipe fractured at "collector" Patched with some cheapo calcium silicate paste. worked like a charm. Reason I'm posting besides to thank Busho for so much expert and professional help here, but to point out that it was hard to locate since the fracture just looked like a black hairline around the pipe.

Nice review. Some mufflers have a tiny hole drilled into the bottom, to allow condensed water to drip away rather than pooling and rusting the muffler prematurely.

great video man, awesome information that was very helpful. I think my hyundai accent has an exhaust leak because when we turn it on we smell exhaust fumes inside the car. Will take a look underneath here in the next few days.

Funny, I was just investigating an exhaust leak on my 91 accord 30 minutes ago. Found a nickel sized hole in the pipe right where it enters the back of the muffler.

***** is there anyway to better pinpoint an exhaust leak other than feeling with your hands? I hear a puttering sound near the middle/rear of the exhaust.

Have a helper hold a rag on the tailpipe to create a restriction. The back pressure will make the leak larger.
