Finding and Cooking Chanterelle Mushrooms
It's the start of the mushroom season here in the Pacific Northwest! Join me as I find chanterelles (Cantharellus formosus) and share some tips about finding and cooking them. I was hunting in mainly Douglas fir at an elevation of about 1500'.
My gear in this video:
Opinel Couteau Champignons (mushroom knife)
Seiko SRPD51
Some mushroom safety items:
1. Never eat a mushroom unless you are absolutely certain of its identity. If in doubt, throw it out!
2. Mushroom hunters have a tendency to get lost. It can be easy to get excited about finding mushrooms, get distracted, and suddenly realize you're lost! Keep track of your bearings, and if you're hunting in an area where you get reception bring your cell phone and make sure it's charged.
3. I have come across some sketchy people out in the woods. As always, be aware of your surroundings. At the very least I always carry my knife for self defense.
I hope you enjoy the video! If you have any comments or suggestions, just leave a comment below.

I went hunting on the same exact day and came up empty-handed. Where EXACTLY are you? Just kidding!😁
Yes devil's club. Keep an eye on them, spring time the green shoots are very tender and tasty, steam down like greens very good to eat! Only about a week window to get them before they leaf out each spring

3:53- Yup Devils Club. NASTY plant. I love Chanterelles, but all of my favorite patches have been logged off or houses built on them.

I hope you can find some new spots. It's really frustrating when mushroom habitat is lost to development.
R u in eastern Wa or western Wa in the video ? :)

I'm in western Oregon, Coast Range. Finding chanterelles can be a challenge, so don't give up! It took me a lot of scouting before I finally found some decent spots. You might also check if there is a mycology club in your area--they may have suggestions for where to go. Good luck!
