Well you don't *have* to be accepted into a university to apply for the dorms. But to keep your application active, you will need to upload your enrollment letter for the next semester. For example, I submitted my studentenwerk Munich dorm application before I got my acceptance letter, but later I was asked to submit my enrollment letter.

Amazing. Thanks for sharing. I did not know that. Do you have to upload one in the same semester or could you, in theory, apply 3 semesters before you want to attend unibersity?

@@markus_rut I would say it depends on the city's student union. For example: Munich: Dorm applications for Summer Semester '22 started on 15th November 2021 and I applied on the very first day. So I was asked to submit the enrollment certificate for SS'22 before a certain deadline. And to keep your application active, you need to keep uploading your enrollment certificate for subsequent semesters, otherwise your application would get deleted. So I don't think the 3-month thingy would be possible here Aachen: As far as I remember, you can apply anytime but you'll have to 'reconfirm' your dorm application every month at a certain date (i didn't need to submit any enrollment certificate), otherwise you'll be kicked off from the waitlist.

This. The most annoying thing is that you can only start applying for the Wintersemester at the end of May. An average waiting time of 4 Semesters means you will not get any room for the first 2 years of your study and likely not the third either. Studentenverbindungen especially the traditional ones are now actively looking for new members due to falling membership but this only applies to Germans. They tend to be quite racist and nationalistic so good luck applying as Ausländer (I tried). Some people have said you can try living with a host family. However the only provider of that service that isn't tied to a language course is Hestia, which takes 10 years to respond. Applying to them was actually the worst decision of my Wohnungssuche because it gave me a false sense of security, which meant I didn't look for alternatives during the best months to do so. Tldr Munich is a really unfriendly place for foreign students so you have to treat your Wohnungssuche like a war. Start as early as possible and use tactics and strategies that are as aggressive as possible to eliminate competition. I wish someone told me this earlier.

I think the same applies of what I said in this video. Just apply early and often through the websites I mentioned :) I would also highly recommend to apply early for a student dorm. There you will have the chance to find accommodation for about 300 - 400 € a month. Even in the outskirts of Munich it is very unlikely to find something cheaper than that.
Hey man. Love your content. What are you pursuing btw?

This sounds already good. Good luck with apartment hunting!
I will hopefully start at TUM this winter semester. My problem with Studentenwerk-München was that their waiting times were mainly 3 or more semsters in their information sheets. From your experience, is that really the case or is it possible to get those apartment in a shorter time period. Thanks!!
@markus_rut

Hey phil! :) it is possible that you get into one of them earlier, but that is only if you're lucky. I would say usually it really takes the amount of semesters they write in the report.
Request from one of your sub:- Can you make video giving us the overview of monthly expenditure on Groceries, shopping, apartment rents and other essential/miscellaneous things. It would great if you share some real life experiences with tips on how to save money. Love From India 🕊️ 🇮🇳 [PS:- I'm also planning to do my higher education in my dream uni TUM]

Great video! Do you know what kind of accomodations are available for exchange students for a single semester, like what options are there if I don't get a place in a dorm
@markus_rut
Жыл бұрын
Hey! :) yeah as an exchange student it is a bit more difficult, since people usually want to find someone who stays longer than just three months😅 But I would say that the whole video still applies. On the plattforms there are also temporary offers, when one of the people want to sublet their room while they are on their exchange semester :) Just start loking as early as possible :)

Hi, may i know if the hall of residence in oberwiesenfeld is the same as the hall of residence in Oberschleißheim?

Don't let yourself be pressured into signing a contract and don't pay a deposit before you have met the person and visited the flat. If it looks too good to be true it probably is :D You can always make a zoom call or online visit of the flat. Don't give them a copy of your passport, wage slip and work contract - they can do Identity frsud with it... Hope this helped :)
Thanks for the video! Should I still send the application in German? Or is it still possible to use English since my German is still very limited?
@markus_rut
Жыл бұрын
Uuuh, That is a tough question that I thought about a lot but came to no conclusion... In my opinion it would be more honest to do it in english and I personally love to spend time with internationals, but from some internationals I've heard that they were not able to find something in english, but when they used German in their application they got more chances...

Hi Markus, Thank you for the content. Was very useful. Actually I am writing you regarding my niece. She just got accepted to TUM, bachelor in management and technology. She is 19yo, from Moldova, international champion in sport dances, with no bad habits, super organized, the pride of our family and honestly speaking she is a dream of a girl. Since you mentioned that one of the key of finding a place in Munich is to ask around, maybe you could recommend someone. Best option would be a WG, with 1-2 more girls, budget max 800 eur/month. Do you think you could help? Btw, I live in Switzerland and I am planning to come in 2 weeks for a couple of days to check on the places for her. Thank you in advance, Best regards, Victoria

Are the contracts for dorms for limited time or can a student opt it for all semesters (masters) on first go only without any requirements to renew or reapply every semester?
@markus_rut
Жыл бұрын
hey! :) Usually you get the dorm room for 6 semester during your Bachelors and 4 semesters during your Masters. But if your studies take longer and you have a reason for that, extension is possible :)

@@markus_rut Great!! Thanks for the info 🤩🤝🏻
It's actually crazy how this hellish accomodation search is just normalized in Germany, in other countries you choose the accomodation, not the other way around. Idk how this isn't seen as an emergency issue and more people aren't pushing for change, but I guess it's cause once you get something permanent then it's not your problem anymore.
@markus_rut
6 ай бұрын
Yeah it is definitely hard. But there are affordable dorm options as well. Unfortunately though not enough. The students here are organizing protest events to bring awareness to this issue
Does TUM have accommodation arrangements for garduate students (PhD)?
Hey I hope this isnt a too personal question for you but how do you make money for these apartments or having this lifestyle with literally no time on the hand for working?
@markus_rut
Жыл бұрын
Hey there are different options on my mind right now: 1. you can always take a part-time job while studying. This is very common 2. You can apply for scholarships 3. You can move into dorms that are cheaper 4. you can move a little bit more fistant to the Center where it is cheaper 5. You can work and save up money before you start studying
