Financial and Social Help for Seniors on their Own

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Are you one of the millions of seniors on their own? A recent study found one out of five seniors over 65 are single and without any family support. Looking at the 40 million seniors who are classified as economically vulnerable, then there’s about 8 million seniors who have just a single income and no one else on which to rely. In this video, Attorney Eric Olsen, Executive Director of the HELPS Nonprofit Law Firm, will examine the special needs that solo seniors have to face.

Many women outlive their husbands and rely on Social Security as their sole source of income. Some seniors never have had kids, or their kids live far away or are estranged. You can call these golden agers solo seniors, orphan seniors, or seniors on their own. Whatever they're called, they have special needs. Attorney Eric Olsen, Executive Director of the HELPS Nonprofit Law Firm, discusses both their financial and social needs, and how to address them. The attorney works with many struggling seniors who have no other means of support, and knows how to deal with their special needs. He explains how they need to live within their means, how to address high housing and transportation costs, how their income and bank accounts are protected, and how they can get both social and financial support.
His advice could help you - or a solo senior you know - deal with being on their own.

Because I came across ur teaching, I have helped my mom and dad keep their home. And I was able to get them a new transportation. Dad being 95 and blind, my mom 88. 😢 I have printed so much of ur info. I helped my uncle as well.

I wish things like this could be taught in schools. Or we can have commercial like this on t.v. Instead of d thrash they have. This will have our young people working toward there long life. Instead of not having a life when we can no longer work. Life is pretty much over at that point. U r merely existing, until ur heart 💜 stops beating. Sad 😢

I'm going on 65 and I'm only getting $941 a month from ss. No savings, but a paid for house in CA. With prop. 13 tax exemption. I inherited it from my wife, about a year ago who inherited from her dad. So property tax is cheap at about $ 1500 a year. I get food stamps and I just squeek by. I'm on medi-cal too. All my money and friends moved far away. I don't have a car either. But what the heck. I'm happy and talk to people but I could really use a couple thousand a year for prop taxes. I retired at 62 1/2 .

I have no family, no kids and am flying solo. I must admit it’s awful. Right now, I’m grieving the loss of a beloved cat and honestly, my life is not good. I spend too much time in my head. Truly, society doesn’t give two straws about the elderly. I’m very glad you both care enough to do these videos.

WELL STATED. DO NOT FORGET the sad case of Karen Paris in Tampa, Florida, who allowed her sister to stay wit her for 10 years, but was murdered in her home by Debra Patton. (2021). Married and childfree with a good nest egg, her golden years were stolen.

The way to help yourself is to help someone else. Obviously, not with money, but just listen to them when they talk. Their interests and concerns will get you out of your head. Comparing their worries to yours will show you how small your problems really are. Losing a cat, when that cat was your best friend, is tough. I've lost several.

I'm alone, but I was married for 13 years once. I chose to not have children. Now, my whole family Dad, Mom, Sister and Brother are gone. I'm still happy, because I can pay my bills and I sleep contently every night. Don't expect your kids to take care of you. You're on your own.

I appreciate you making these videos. I am so glad that I am 100% debt free. I don't owe anyone anything and I pay just $354 a YEAR in property taxes. I can't imagine having credit card payments, car payments, a mortgage, or any other debt. It would be too stressful to have debt.

If you don't pay your debt then your credit becomes shot. If you try to find a cheaper place to live you won't be able to becuz of your credit score. Plus moving is expensive. Also, it's hard to get Section 8 housing. So many on the list and usually the housing is in areas where the seniors don't feel safe. Wish this would have been covered.

I need about 2.5k to move deposit, movers, utilities etc.. but my credit score is below 500+ I got evicted from last apt cuz aunt’s POA told Apt Mgmt I had 3 cats!! Plus he denied me the 10k inheritance aunts will!! Being sued cc debt of $1,450!! I know my SSA + VA disability benefits are EXEMPT!! But the judgment will be filed and granted cuz plaintiff Atty persists!! Lawyer told me that this will be on my credit reports!! WTH.. can’t win for losing!! Boo t this entity has blessed me with hope.. I was OT Assistant fir 19 yrs and THOROUGHLY loved my career!! Now I volunteer with Sr Ctr programs- same very very satisfying always every day!! Thank you, but I'm suggesting a little less repetition about debt forgiveness and more about eliminating a car and getting free transportation through medicare and senior centers, and ordering grocery delivery online. In my area, instacart offers very speedy delivery of groceries, within a few hours! The cost is about $20 each time which includes the driver tip, and most of these store services accept EBT. So by doing this twice a month, it's only $40 to have your groceries delivered right to your door. Each individual item is priced slightly higher, which shouldn't be the case, but it's doable and easy. Walmart is excellent as usual, I'm not within range to get their grocery delivery, but when I choose the SHIPPING option, I can order many non perishable foods and anything else I need, with FREE SHIPPING for orders over only $35! And their shipping is very fast! Yes, we're quite isolated without a car, but seeking out the available alternatives and making a few plans to get out with friends counteracts that.

This might be a good topic to cover with Senior Living. Many areas have senior centers with no cost involved to become involved. I believe many seniors who are alone would benefit by attending a church. I don't think there is a church out there of any denomination that wouldn't welcome someone. I know my wife worked for Hospice for many years and they were always looking for volunteers. Eric HELPS

I had just sold my cape may NJ beachfront property she got that and my car. I found myself homeless careless broke and on the streets alone of course my income was also cut in half. I've been homeless for the past 2 years . I hear about all this funding but all I was offered was a tent last February. It's hopeless I believe?

I’m disabled and I just turned 60 and live off of $1100 and can’t afford a place to live, my car and insurance eat up most of my money so I’m lost as to what to do. My doctor cut my liver during gallbladder surgery and I’ve never been the same. I would love to share a house with an elderly person who needs social interaction while helping me with a roof over my head. My credit keeps going up because of my income but don’t I have to pay them if I want good credit?

I’m a solo senior interested in Senior issues. I worked for over 40 years as a Registered Nurse. I notice you say that Social Security is protected by law. In my experience that’s not entirely true. I had a couple elderly very sick patients that had federal Student Loans and a portion of their Social Security was being garnished by the government for the student loan repayment. Despite the fact that the doctor had written a letter to Social Security telling them how I’ll this man was. He was on hemodialysis, kidney failure, heart failure, diabetes and yet believed he must continue to work, until the day he passed out at work. He was continually so worried about the Student Loans.

It seems your video just solved my problem I didn't want to face, but I MUST accept what you've suggested. But how do we deal with our conscience? I'm struggling financially at 80 in social security, but my conscience won't let me not pay one of my large monthly bills that I have, in which if I didn't pay it, I could survive ok then. There's no money at all left over each month to pay for home, car, or even clothes, repairs and/or for things that just normally wear out or for the unexpected or the un-planned for. When I took the loan I had a plan to work to pay it. But now I physicall can't work. I"m a happy person as long as I live in the moment and ignore my problems. But suddenly I'm finding that ignoring my needs is only making them pile up until now, suddenly I've come face to face with a huge pile and some of it has to be dealt with NOW. It appears that your advice is what I needed to hear and somehow actually do. A thousand thanky's and hugs. :)

I called the HELPS line and a nice lady answered. I sought advice on what to do when I visited the judge over my pending eviction. In my 67 years I have never been in a situation like this. She told me HELPS is just for any help I need getting creditors to stop harassing me. I told her that could be more of a problem if I didn't have a block on my phone. Right now it is far down the list. If harassing creditors isn't your problem or isn't the problem you need help with right away then this isn't the help you need. Nice of them to do what they do though,

Also would you mention if you haven't already a loan modification for homeowners that are low income. This can enhance my information as an advocate if I become one. Also, I believe in Ohio there is a an organization called PWC. People working cooperatively where seniors 60 and over can benefit by no cost home repairs or necessary too mandatory assistance with homes. These repairs are done by Volunteers in the vicinity. Do other states have that? Thank you both very much

I’m a senior o SS trying to go back to work part time but about 6 months ago while driving on the freeway in California the accelerator cable in my car 2006 Santa Fe got stuck and the car accelerated with my foot off the gas. I was terrified and thought I was going to crash but thank God I was able to exit the freeway and eventually able to stop the vehicle. Hyundai has discontinued the needed part and have refused to assist after keeping the car for weeks. I had previously spent thousands on repairs and now stuck with a car I can’t drive. After 6 months I managed to get a cable from another vehicle but it had the same problem which my mechanic bonded temporarily. Needless to say, I’m terrified to drive it because it over-accelerates. Is there any help for someone like me. I can still work but I need reliable transportation. Plus need to safely get around to doctors appointments and grocery etc. Please advise. Thank you.

It might depend on the type of debt. If your primary residence is Free & Clear (mortgage paid in full), it is highly unlikely to lose your home. If you still have an outstanding balance on your mortgage, but you always pay the monthly payment on time, no late payment or current arrears, then it is highly unlikely to lose your home. However, if you had a repair (like a new roof, etc.) made to your home and a Mechanics & Materialman Lien was placed on your primary residence, then it is possible for you to have title issues on your property, and a judgment against you. If you are talking about debts like credit cards, car loans, medical debts, anything not attached or related to your primary residence, then you will not lose your home (these types of debt can be put in a Bankruptcy filing).

If you are disabled, then you are disabled, you cannot be "kicked off disability" due to car loan, or car value, or total personal property. You can be disqualified for assistance that targets low-income people. such as SNAP benefits, Section 8/Housing Voucher, utility assistance, etc. Decide if you & your partner/roommate are going to stay together or separate, because that will make a difference in how much a couple can put towards rent, or much lower amount to put towards rent as single-person residences. You will likely need to rent an apartment instead of a house because you are now priced out of renting a house (just like abled-body people in the current economic conditions). You probably need to reassess whether you & roommate can continue to be pet owners, considering the amount of funds that need to go towards their feeding & care. Look into PAWS, they are a "no kill" animal shelter that places animals into new homes.

States WILL garnish social security benefits for 25 year old past child support arrears. $182.30 a month from a $702 monthly income that is a senior's SOLE SOURCE OF SURVIVAL. Forcing the senior to live in their car. And NO ONE can stop it, even when the senior goes on SSI.
