One of the greatest marketing decisions ever. Baby Yoda was not featured in any of the promotional trailers or posters. Viewers of episode 1 of the show saw him and told their friends. Most studio execs would have slapped him front and center on a poster to get the kids interested, but Jon Favreau knew it would alienate the older audience he was trying to bring in. It's the simplest formula ever but it works: Mando is cool + Baby Yoda is cute= big bucks

I think Donald Glover came out and said that he found out about Baby Yoda while filming Solo: A Star Wars Story, and strongly urged Lucasfilm to keep him a secret by not featuring him in ANY promotional material and even abstain from making Baby Yoda toys and action figures until after the first season was released. And it looks like they took his advice, or were at least on the same page as Glover.

the craziest thing any mainstream film or show has pulled off in 20 years is that they not only kept BaYo from leaking, but Disney somehow decided to *wait to make merch of him* to keep him secret, losing sooo much money that first shopping season. mind-blowing.
Character development. Slow pace. Western themes, religious themes. Father Son dynamics. Simple but compelling adventures. A splash of "the force" without 6 billion explosions or lasers per second. All in the Star Wars universe. It was a great start and gave me hope in this first season.

18:22 her: "but you're so small". Yoda: "judge me by my size do you"?
Enjoy the Show! And yes "The Book of Boba Fett" is very important for Season 3... it's only 7 episodes ;)
Just for reference, the series takes place 5 or 6 years after The Empire Strikes back. The producers (Filoni & Favreau) wanted to provide a "spaghetti western" setting. If you haven't picked up on it, Mandalorians are wicked fearsome fighters. Even one of them is a danger. The metal is Beskar; it was designed to defend against light sabers. As you can imagine, it's pretty valuable stuff. Since there's only 8 episodes (chapters) per season, I'm guessing you react to 4-6 next, and 7-8 for the finale. Many of us consider this the best Star Wars since the original trilogy. Forget the final trilogy! P.S. Sooner or later the fanatics will insist you need to watch 3 other series to "really understand" The Mandalorian. This is not so. "Baby Yoda" was a sobriquet granted by the internet. In the series he's referred to as The Child.
The reason the other Mandalorians helped him was because protecting children is one of their most essential core beliefs

Baby Yoda has a name...I'll never tell! The "Bad Guy" who wanted the Baby is actually a Director in real life and when they 1st started filming they would film each scene twice, once with the "Baby" puppet and once without, to inset CG later and he finally said forget the CG "Baby Yoda", This is the Way...
Honestly, she's going to have more questions than you all realize cause of the amount of Rebels and Clone Wars content hinted at in this show lol

Not sure if you remember in The Empire Strikes Back when Darth Vader is hiring bounty hunters to find the Millennium Falcon. He spoke to Boba Fett to specifically tells him "No disintegrations". That's what he was talking about =) One of the best things about The Mandalorian as a show is that it's enjoyable even if you're not deep in Star Wars lore but there are enough little bits and pieces scattered though out that makes Star Wars geeks squee with delight. For example when he was facing the mudhorn and his dagger started to vibrate was one of the most exciting things I've ever seen since it made 'vibroblades' canon.
If you haven't seen Clone Wars / Rebels yet, you'll miss some elements of background (not so much in season 1, but some more important in season 2). I hope you'll catch this great animated series, at least the most important episodes.
Glad you liked this show, I just hope you can avoid spoilers for upcoming episodes, because you deserve the full effect we all had.
Disintegrating weapons have not been shown in action before this, but in "Empire", Darth Vader admonishes the bounty hunters "No disintegrations!"
"If they're large they'll be terrifying to get close to" That's what she said!!!! ~Michael Scott
Vader, wagging a finger: No disintegrations! Mando: Yeah? Watch me!
The man who hires Mando' for the job, is German film Director Werner Herzog (his films, You have likely not reviewed). The droid who intends to "self-destruct" is voiced by Director Taika Waititi, from New Zealand (of two Thor movies, and other creative endeavor)....Mandolorian has a number of talent on screen, and in production. And, your '77 t-shirt, is great! "I have spoken" 😉
When we last saw Yoda (chronologically), he was 900 years old. "When 900 years you reach, look as good you will not." When Mando was liking the 4 to 1 odds, it was just him. He wasn't protecting a possibly fragile creature. (I say possibly because he doesn't know what this kid can endure, but it's probably a lot less than his Beskar armor.
This will be a fun ride with you Addie! Your reactions are always so heartwarming and fun. 😊
Your best introduction to the Mandalorian culture would be through several Clone Wars and Rebels episodes. There is a particular trait among Mandalorians which comes up later in the season which is going to cause confusion if this show is going to be your only source.
30:24 no one is prepared for Baby Yoda. his cooings will melt even the coldest of hearts!
18:20 "But you're so small." "Judge me by my size, do you?"
The rifle he uses is a disintegrator rifle, a weapon so deadly it’s outlawed by both Empire and New Republic. Which is why Vader specifically pointed to Boba and said “no disintegrations”. Mandalorians don’t have such scruples.
This was a fun and cute reaction/ review of the episodes. You may not remember but Yoda tells Luke in "Return of the Jedi" he's 900 years old. There's so much Lore about Mandalorians... that you have no idea about... which makes it a bit more fun seeing it revealed to you in shock and aw. Can't wait to see more.
To explain the whole "I was helped by an enemy" line hundreds of years ago the Jedi and Mandalorians fought each other and they've been bitter rivals ever since, even with the Clone Wars/Rebels stuff that relationship wasn't exactly restored, they still don't like each other
14:05 Remember, Yoda was training Jedi for 800 years, so that would mean Yoda was around 900 years old or more.
In-universe, baby Yoda was born the same year as Annikin Skywalker
The first 3 episodes and last 2 are my favorite of season 1 of The Mandalorian. The first 3 episodes make a nice trilogy of episodes.
Yoda in the original trilogy was about 800 years old, and as the IG droid said, "Species Age Differently" BTW: you should also watch "The Clone Wars" before proceeding to season 2 of "The Mandalorian" as there's characters from clone wars that appear in season 2
"Yeah, I Don't Think That Matters To Him" You'd be correct to presume that, Addie Especially, after you see how well he can fight
"Your ancestors rode the great Mythosaurs," says Kuiil. I have spoken.
13:49 Now that is a Disintegration. another bounty hunter with similar garbs was once warned against disintegrations by Vader, implying that Mandalorians had that kind of technology.
The Star Wars-iest Star Wars thing going right now. Well written, well directed, well acted. Love MANDO!!!
I love how you watch several episodes in one video. This is the way.
Andie, I once worked at a place in Florida that had some Giant Tortoise . The male was 76 years old and just entering puberty.
Keep in mind for Yodas species, they live a very long time. Yoda was like in his 900s for most of the series. So baby yoda being 50 is the equivalent of a child for the species.
Great job reacting to your first three episodes of The Mandalorian, Addie!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽I'm sure you'll enjoy your continuing journey through the series!🙂
I am SO excited to see your reaction to this. Based upon your other reactions, I am pretty sure you will LOVE this series. As you watch this series, be aware that there are two episodes of another Disney+ Star Wars limited series that are essential viewing between season 2 and season 3 and are crucial to the narrative continuity of the main characters in this series. I won't say more than that at this time, I don't want to spoil any of the series reveals for you, but when you finish season 2 people will inform you which series and episodes will bridge the gap before you continue with season 3.

Just came from Natalie Gold’s The Boys reaction, where people are accusing her of having seen the show before… like she admits to, in the first 10 seconds, of her video.
Addie: "This is the way!" Us: "..... This is the way...."
Vader: "You underestimate the power of the Dark side." Addie: "I should not underestimate the power of STAR WARS fans." I have to ask, was that planned in your intro? Vader to Boba Fett: "No disintegrations..."
I NEVER tire of watching people's reaction to seeing 'Baby Yoda' for the first time. Keep up the great work!
It is a Disruptor weapon. Disruptors work by firing a bolt of energy that causes biological matter to explode, literally disintegrating creatures. Disruptors are outlawed in some parts of the galaxy, thus one of the reasons why Vader said no disintegrations.
Can I just say? Carl Weathers is legendary. I love him in this show.
Mando's Sniper Rifle is an Amban phase-pulse blaster, a kind of disruptor rifle which disintegrates its targets. Disintegration weapons are generally more frowned upon in civilised systems compared to regular blasters, but in the outer rim anything goes I guess.

When Vader told Fett "No Disintegrations" you understand what he meant.
The Mandalorian & baby Yoda are in the "Book of Boba Fett" so you might want to watch that too. The Book of Boba Fett takes place after season 2 of the Mandalorian. When It comes to baby Yoda's age, don't forget that Yoda was 900 years old when he died in Return of the Jedi
Regarding Baby Yoda's age: "When 900 years old YOU reach, look as good you will not, hmm?" Regarding Baby Yoda picking up the Reek (comparing their sizes): “Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?”
Addie now you understand why this was voted for you to watch and why so many love it everyone falls in love with baby Yoda at first sight.
This is where the fun begins🔥 Now I can also start my countdown to when you finally get to Andor They never showed disintegration kills before but it’s referenced in Empire Strikes Back when Vader is briefing the bounty hunters and singles out Boba Fett by telling him “no disintegrations”

The Mandalorian has such a strong pilot episode
The Imperial who hires Mando is played by Werner Herzog, who’s most well-known as a director of the artsy type. Nick Nolte is the short alien Kuiil. I just checked, and I don’t think you’ve watched “Rocky,” so you wouldn’t recognize Kreef as Carl Weathers, aka Apollo Creed from that movie series.
His rifle harkens back to Vader telling Boba..”and no Disintegrations
If you watch the Clone Wars cartoon series (which is excellent), there is quite a bit of background/lore about Mandalorians and their planet Mandalore.
Baby yoda see's every squirmy thing as food. XD
I remember visiting my mother in a different state who had already watched it and loved it, and she sat me down for the first time to watch it. Half the time I was explaining to her the lore from the books, comics, and KoToR, like beskar and such.

@Addiecount nah bothered, but thanks anyway. Keep up the great videos.
FYI, there's plenty of stuff in The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett that'll mean more to you if you've watched all seasons of the animated shows Clone Wars and Rebels, but that's a lot of stuff to watch. It's well worth watching Clone Wars and Rebels, because a lot of it is really good, but it's also a huge time commitment, and honestly I don't think it's necessary to enjoy The Mandalorian or Book of Boba Fett. The showrunners did a good job of showing & telling you the things you need to know about the characters and concepts that they introduce from those shows. Of course, it makes it even better if you've watched Clone Wars and Rebels, and there are all kinds of easter eggs thrown in for people who've watched them and who are familiar with all kinds of other Star Wars products, including ones that are no longer considered canon.
the Mandalorian Mythosaur is like a giant dragon with long tusks. Keep an eye out for the likeness of it's skull markings.
Mando considers the young one a foundling just as he was … that lady said foundlings are the future
Great reaction, Addie! I've been waiting for your Mandalorian reaction! About "baby yoda"...remember, Yoda was over 900 years ago!
Remember like Yoda said: “Size, matters not.”
"Weapons are part of my religion." .......And I felt that!!!!!
So glad you’re starting this. One of my favorite pieces of media ever
I am having an awful day, but this put a smile and a laugh on my face so thank you. So thank you this is one of my favorite shows ever :D
Yoda to Luke: "When 900 years old you reach, look as good you will not" in empire strikes back Darth Vader when speaking to the bounty hunters, "I want him alive, no disintegrations"
You might recognize the actor playing the bounty broker, Carl Weathers, from "Predator"
Mandos rifle is a disruptor rifle, they are strong against vehicles and disintegrate life forms
The reason you are hesitant about knowing, if there are disintegration weapons, is probably that in the back of your mind you remember Vader saying to Boba Fett "No disintegrations", when he sent the bounty hunters in "The Empire Strikes Back".
Remember what the IG droid said about different species aging differently, so this might live to be many centuries. Yoda lived to be 900. So when put into that perspective, 50 years old for someone of his species isn't that much at all! Hence baby.
RIP Grant Imahara. He built baby Yoda and was a super cool guy. You might know him from MythBusters.
Some Star wars perspective, Yoda was 900+ when we see him and as he dies so for that species you can kinda divide there age by 10 to get an equivalent age so Yoda dies at 90 and "Baby Yoda" is about 5 years old
Just remember, in the original trilogy Yoda said “When 900 years old you reach, look as good you will not!” Hopefully that helps you understand why Baby Yoda is still a baby at 50.
T-Rex with an angler fish? That does it, you're one of my favorite reactors XD Ahem, I have spoken ;)
Just remember that Yoda was about 900 years old when he died. There is intentionally very little information about Yoda's species to keep him mysterious and theories that Yoda excerted himself so hard when he fought The Emperor in Revenge of the Sith that he almost should have died right there, but he just barely forced himself to stay alive just long enough to train Luke, as he passes almost right after. We dont know the potential life span of their species and it might even be quite abit beyond 1000 years. 50 year old Baby Yoda doesnt seem that crazy when put in the perspective of actual Yoda.
You are in for a great ride with this series. This is The Way.
Yay for starting to watch it! But seriously, to fully appreciate especially season 2, you would have to watch at least some core episodes of The Clone Wars!
I'm so excited for you! Can't wait for me honestly
It's an amazing series. I'm glad you are enjoying it.
remember, Yoda himself died of old age at 900, so 50 really is nothing to one of his species. It does however put a question mark on how they grow, since Yoda said he'd been teaching Jedi for 800 years, so maybe we'll see a growth spurt soon?
"But youre so small" A wise Jedi master once said "size matters not. Look at me, judge me by my size do you?"
You are truly in for a treat, Addie. These directors are the best in the business and you will soon find out why. I am so glad you started this series, and thought once you do you might even binge watch it. "I have spoken"😆
The guy who hired him is actually legendary film director Werner Herzog. To see him in 'Star Wars' is... ...weird.
For the next 2 weeks you will now find yourself saying "I have spoken!" and "This is the way! in conversions a lot now
Addies comment about looking as good at 50 as grogu is hilarious. I have spoken
Love your reactions to the best Star Wars show of the Disney era. Seasons 1 and 2 are amazing in the way that they capture the feelings and sensations of Tattooine from A New Hope: down and dirty, gritty and basic, and perfectly done for that. And the show only focuses on being entertaining. There is some stuff from the old animated shows Clone Wars and Rebels that would be good to know and would work well as between-season viewing for you, even if not put on YT. I hadn't seen the old shows, but I knew enough history from stories friends who had seen them told me that I made more than half of the connections. I'm not sure how best to do an info gathering of stuff that is important but isn't spoiling anything, but I'm sure someone somewhere has such a thing.
50 years old isn't so crazy when you consider Yoda was estimated around 900yo in the original trilogy 😊
Fantastic reaction, Addie. Thank you for doing this. I look forward to the next set.

Really hope you're gonna Watch Andor if you're starting this, haven't seen all of it myself but already it seems like the best SW series by far, maybe even more than that Also, quick trivia, the creepy imperial guy is played by Werner Herzog, legendary German director, producer and actor, who was also fundamental in getting the crew to use the Baby Yoda puppet to the degree that they did instead of cg-ing him

This show tried something not a lot of film and tv ever would, in having a protagonist that always wears a helmet. It's always just kinda been accepted to never do that, so in medieval films or tv shows the main characters will always run into battle without helmets just so that we can see who's who and see them emote. But clearly we see here, it's absolutely possible to convey all the emotions you need in other ways.
