I think the second movie is the best because there is more action and throught the series you begin to understand more and more the concept of the matrix you should listen the whole series. It's not my favorite series of all time too but it's really a unique type of movie and a must to watch entirely

I think the reason Keanu was chosen for this role, was because he IS cyberpunk for many of us. 4 years before he played the lead in Johnny Mnemonic which is based on a short story written by William Gibson. Many credit Gibson as the father of Cyberpunk with his first novel Neuromancer which came out in 1984.

So Mary chose the BLUE PILL when she was 14, by going back to her normal life and not watching the rest of the movie. LOL

well since the "outside" of the Matrix is just another matrix (as evidenced by Neo's powers still working) and how what Morphius tells Neo about the nature of the matrix not standing up to the simplest scrutiny, then it is just a choice of illusions, really. Which incidentally makes the people who call slurping down corporate and fascist propaganda taking the red pill extra ironic.

@@samuelslade6717 Actually the matrix itself is a copy of another movie called Dark City, which goes a long way to explaining why when they needed to make sequels and be original with storylines, the quality declined.

Agents aren't people, they are sentient programs, which is why they never technically die. They can take over any body that's still connected to the Matrix and of the agent dies, that person dies instead of the agent

The others do not nor do ordinary people. It's Neos purpose. He carries that code even in the real world as is seen in Reloaded.

Let's see. I was 40 when this movie came out and was 37 when Mary was born. I don't recall feeling particularly old in 1983. I WAS probably under the influence of about six hits of acid, a metric shit-ton of cocaine, a bit of hash, and nearly a fifth of vodka. Unless it was the weekend when I partied.

It's not just fighting, training and cryptic talk. This is why you've been told you have to watch it more than once. The pacing is mad, but hidden in the pacing is an epic story. Details you will never see in the first watch. Take the Oracle conversation. There is not a single wasted word, everything said is about what is going to happen next. To really get how good this film is, watch it 2 or 3 times more. It's worth it!

I missed it in cinema, but it was the first DVD I baught. I watched it so often that I watched it not only dubbed but in original language. When Reloaded hit theaters in Germany they also had special screenings of the original movie in original language (at least in my location) and when I finally saw it in cinema I knew the lines of at least the first 15min by heart. I later acomplished that we could watch it in school. Besides the fact that the idea of the Matrix in itself is plausible in a way that everything you percieve is just electrical signals in your brain, you would not really be able to disprove that you are NOT living in a Matrix. They also draw a ton of references to an other well known age old "saviour/chosen one" story. :-)

And then you start to notice the poor character development, worldbuilding and all the compromises made because the producers were too dumb to understand the story that the audience would have. It’s still a great movie don’t get me wrong, but it and the sequels could have been soo much more interesting if it hadn’t shot itself in the foot from the get-go, and introduced important sci-fi concepts to the masses allowing more simulation sci-fi to be greenlit sooner.

Thank you, yes this. Also - the "10%" number people hear, is about how much of the brain is "lit up" at any normal instant, but we use all of it over time. There is a moment people "use" close to 100% of their brain however, and it's called an epileptic attack - so it doesn't make you smart or better - it completely disables you.

I'd say it's probable that half the sounds are accurate and half are added in-post. It's a semi-accurate noise in itself (...on average. This movie sometimes gets a little unusual and sci-fi with it).

And if you now go back and look, you'll see that, of course, everything the Oracle said came true. "I'm not the one." "Sorry, kid. You've got the gift, but you're waiting for something." "What?" "I don't know. Your next life, maybe?" ... "One of you is going to die." And indeed, Neo did die, and The One woke up in his place.

The difference between Neo and an Agent is, Neo is a human connected into the Matrix, the Agents are computer code, part of the Matrix itself. You have to destroy the code to destroy the Agent, or it can keep coming back.

There's the line in the opening scene where Cypher asks Trinity if she thinks Neo is the One. Trinity says it doesn't matter what she believes, but one must evaluate that in the context of her being told by the Oracle that the man she loves will be the One. If she thinks he's the One, it follows that she would necessarily be in love with him. That she doesn't instantly reject the concept but instead dodges the question speaks to how long she's been ruminating on the matter.

I always think of Trinity falling in love with Neo in the same terms as Neo knocking over the vase. The Oracle told Trinity that she would fall in love with the One. Then Morpheus keeps telling everyone Neo is the One. Would Trinity have fallen in love with Neo if the Oracle hadn't said anything?

I agree to a point but in my opinion Reeves went through an extended period of bland performances, of which the Matrix was sadly one. The film is great, but Reeve's performance is a block of wood in a black coat. Not sure what happened there but he seemed to lose his talent for quite some time before regaining it in time for Joh Wick, thank goodness.

@@GriffinPilgrim IMHO He got typecast as Ted "Theodore" Logan. No one wanted him for his acting ability, they wanted him to see something impressive and go "Woah..." with varying degrees of animation behind it. Even with the star power of being "The One" post Matrix he still got stuck mostly in those roles until he really started to lean into the action hero typecasting instead in the late 00s/early 10s.

4:33 Trinity: "I know why you're here, Neo. I know what you've been doing." Neo: "Runs home and frantically tries to clear browsing history."

"The Matrix" is not just another film. This movie has DEFINED an entire generation of sci-fi film fans! In the same way that the original "Star Wars" did. One only wonders what the next generation-defining sci-fi film will be, because I imagine it will be just as mind-bendingly DEEP.

Avatar was advertised as one when it came out. Infinity war and endgame kinda were for harboring such a large cast of "main" characters and continued storylines. I would agree that inception had to have been.

I was thinking the same thing. I saw The Matrix in college a year or two after release and got to have that Star Wars mind-blown experience. And though it may not be ESB, the anticipation of the sequel. Reading this discussion I thought it was too early for the next phenomenon, then I did the math. 22 years and 22 years, wow.

The Matrix is a great analogy tool for therapy. There are multiple applications to be made. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when Morpheus asks Neo, "You think that's air your breathing now?" That, and Morpheus' facial expressions are on point and you can see the truth dawning in Neo's noggin when he gets up.

One of my favorites. Don't forget that Trinity had been watching Neo for a long time so she had time to develop those feelings.

This movie spawned sooo much in the world of us nerds. It truly is a legend. If you enjoyed it enough to want more story and answers, the next two movies are personally recommended and packed with stuff.

The Matrix was filmed in Sydney Australia at the Fox Studios and on locations within the city, which will explain why you recognize some of the locations Mary, because they filmed in Australia most of the cast are also Australian.

The W sisters are from Chicago and all the streets mentioned in the script are Chicago streets. I think they actually managed to get one or two scenes shot in Chicago but MOST of it is Sydney.

A cool little thing about the scene in Martin Place is that the crowd they are walking through are all pairs of twins. It was meant to look like the programmer had copy-pasted a bunch to fill out the crowd. The filmmakers did an open casting call for identical twins so most of the twins in NSW are in that scene!

You need to watch "The Animatrix" which is a series of animated short films that is the prequel to "The Matrix" film series and will explain a lot of the concepts in the movie

The Second Renaissance was better than any of the movies.

Long ago in the US, Laurence Fishbourne was interviewed on the PBS "Charlie Rose" show when the movie first came out. He described how he got hired. They said "We're making a genre film. It's a action movie in the style of Japanese anime. Are you interested?" He said "Hell, yea. Sign me on." They did not know he had been an anime junkie since the late '70s in the pre-otaku era !

Fun fact: The Wachowski Brothers asked for a budget of 80 million dollars. This was denied and they were only given 11 Million. So they spent it ALL on Trinity's opening sequence. When they showed the opening scene to the executives, they were so impressed they greenlit the original budget that was requested.

Another film that has the bullet-dodging and was called a Matrix knock-off is "Equilibrium" starring Christian Bale but it's much more than that. It takes place in the future where emotions have been all but outlawed, people are medicated and all art has been banned. Well worth viewing.

It wasn't that Agent Smith 'died', the body he was occupying did and he just jumped into one of the people on the train. However, Neo obliterated him later :)

@@muckit606 I do seem to recall that the Wachowskis confirmed at one point that when an Agent takes over a new body it does kill the person they jump into though. Not directly like they'd been shot but the Matrix ejects them like it did with Neo, just without the tracking program to let anyone find them.

My favorite part is when Neo comes back to life and awakens as the one, and he flexes and makes the walls bow outward

Keanu, Lawrence Fishburne , Carrie Moss and Hugo Weaving trained Kung Fu for four months under the supervision of Yuen Wo Ping!

Trinity is a soldier. As such, she's generally pretty reserved. You even made a remark about how much you liked her "poker-face." Unless she just comes out and tells you, you're not gonna get much from Trinity.

The way they have Cypher hint at her feelings for Neo because he's watching her it is pretty clever.

Watching the Animatrix anthology series will fill in a lot of the world building graps left by the movies.

"You're cuter than I thought. I can see why she likes you ... Who? ... Not too bright, though." ...

One of my favorite movies of all time. Seen it in theaters 3 times in 1999 when I was 15. It was revolutionary.

This came out before serious social media and there was very little given away in the trailer. My friends and I went to see it in the afternoon opening day knowing only that it was that Keanu Hacker film. We weren’t excited we just literally had nothing better to do. Best surprise of my life.

The other thing The Matrix really pioneered in Hollywood was fight choreography. There's a real night-and-day switch between pre-Matrix and post-Matrix fight scenes.

The love between Trinity and Neo was supposed to be underdeveloped, so that it would be at least a little surprising for the ending.

Keanu was also in the 1995 Cyberpunk film "Johnny Mnemonic" based off the short story by William Gibson, the author of "Neuromancer" the first major cyberpunk text in 1984.

I read Neuromancer back in 84. I was only 10 so I didn’t get most of the details. Still was a great read.

All it takes is listening to the intro themes in the very beginning and I'm instantly IMMERSED into the world of the Matrix.

"I've seen an agent punch through a concrete wall, men have emptied entire clips at them and hit nothing but air, yet their strength and their speed are still based in a world that is built on rules, because of that they will never be as strong or as fast as you can be." Best movie quote ever.

From Blade Runner to Ghost in the Shell to The Matrix.

When I saw this when this came out, I was like...6? And It kinda blew my mind. Before I knew anything about film making, I knew that what I saw, I liked the techniques used. Plus ever since then, I've been on the Keanu train, and never went off, so when you get to Reloaded and Revolutions, it does get amped up, and their not the most favorable movies to fans, but they have their merits.

@@richardpuente867 It's actually EASIER as a little kid, because as a little kid, you're not as mentally "trapped in the real world" as adults are. Probably why Morpheus told Neo that it's just "easier" to free the minds of children, rather than adults past a certain age.

You said that the love part of it was underdeveloped, but I kind of disagree. They alluded to Trinity following & watching Neo for a long time before they actually met. It may be a little stalkerish, but she knew a lot about him. lol "You like watching him, don't you?" - Cypher to Trinity at the beginning. And don't think of agents as being a body or person that can die. They are programs that take control of bodies & occupy them for their needs. So when Agent Smith 'died' from the train, the body he occupied is gone & he takes control of another body.

When films evolve and change cinema. Best example of the 90s

When agents get killed they just take over another body of a human that is still plugged into the Matrix. So he did kill Agent Smith with the train. But then some one on the train just becomes Agent Smith and he starts his pursuit again. They just always come back.

You have to remember that Morpheus and Trinity have been watching him for some time. They never specify his long Trinity had been watching him (to fall in love) but she was convinced by the time they met.

Many people thought this movie took a lot of concepts from Dark City which came out before this. It would be interesting to see you react to that as well and see if you can draw any parallels

This EPIC movie changed the whole movie landscape forever! I literally watched it in the theatres like 20 times 🤭 It inspired me so much!

My friends and I saw this in the cinema in 1999, back when I was a sprightly 22 years old! Cannot believe this movie celebrates its 25th anniversary next year (along with The Phantom Menace)!

To think Will Smith turned down the role of Neo and instead he accepted a role in Wild Wild West

"NEO" is an anagram of "ONE". It is also an anagram of "ENO", meaning that Brian Eno is The One. The Matrix made use of leftover sets from Dark City, another movie you might find of interest.

Matrix is one of those films Mary. It blew me tf away when I first seen it too. Still does.

You forget that Trinity has known him for longer than what we saw in the movie, she has been following the idea of "The One" for years, just as Morpheus has and so she fell in love with him long before they first met. She fell in love with someone she didn't know in the same way someone could fall in love with a hero they had never met, except she had been expressly told by the Oracle years before that she would love him. If that makes sense. It wasn't a whirlwind romance, Trinity has been preparing herself for years to meet the person a prophet not only said she would fall in love with but also someone that will save their world. That's quite a powerful driver of emotions.

Like the Oracle said, Neo was waiting for his "next life".. Neo was killed by Agent Smith, and brought back by Trinity.. Thus, his "next life"...

Neo was always the one. What the Oracle said is that he's got the gift, but he's just waiting on something, another life perhaps. So when he died and came back that was his next life.

Oh wow you're definitely in for a ride I can't wait to see the other matrix reloaded and revelations as well

Sorry but I really couldnt disagree more with your analysis of this movie. I dont think its dated at all and its very strange that you would say that Infinity War has less action than this movie. Infinity Wars is 3 hours of action, The Matrix only has about 30 minutes of action in the entire movie. One of the reason the Matrix is so well loved is because it isnt just mindless action, it put story over action.

I do enjoy your reactions to movies, you are funny. Especially the way you laugh sometimes gets me laughing.

You caught allot of stuff but you also missed allot of stuff. Trinity had been watching NEO for years. She volunteered to take extra shifts watching him in the matrix. She was in love with him before she ever met him in the "real world". It wasn't a short period of time, it was just a short period of time on screen. They spend allot more time on their relationship in the other 2 movies but the first one had to introduce so many concepts that they had to balence.

@@harish123az She had been watching him because she had too, but when she learnt who he was she fell in love with him. Even if you consider the watching part to be stalking, that still doesnt change the fact that she probably knew him as much as he knew himself.

She was sort of manipulated into it, the oracle placed the idea of falling in love with the one in her head. She believes in Morpheus, and she believes in the oracle, as such she believes that she has no real choice. Truth is she always had a choice and she likely wouldn't have fallen in love with him if the oracle hadn't told her she would.

@@harish123az it was part of her job to watch him. She was assigned to watch him that's not the same as stalking. Spending so much time with him she grew close to him learning about who we was more than in most other situations because when nobody's watching you're your true self.

I didn't remember that he wake up because of a 'true love kiss" LMAO

One thing to keep in mind about agents, they don't really die (except at the end where he exploded), they just transfer to someone else that hasn't been unplugged.

When you thought it was dreams early on it was just him waking up the next morning.

Watching the opening half hour or so of this movie for the first time is such a trip. I still find it hard to believe that so many people haven't seen it.

The Oracle never told Neo he wasn't the one. She asked him what he thought she was going to say and he's the one who said "that I'm not the one", because he was in denial. She couldn't be the one to take that doubt away from him. Only he could answer the question of who he is, and he wasn't ready to answer it, so he wasn't ready to have anyone answer it for him. A major theme of this movie is identity, and nobody else can tell you who you are. When Neo got sick of being called "Mr. Anderson" and stated "My name is Neo", that was him letting go of the doubt and claiming his own identity, and accepting all the difficult things that unfortunately come with that. Both writer-directors are transgender. They were still closeted back then, probably going through a very similar internal struggle between the blue pill / Mr. Anderson (continuing to live the lie of assigned identity) and the red pill / The One (accepting the challenges that come with living truthfully). Lana ended up transitioning first (privately, then publicly after being outed against her will), and Lilly years later.

A perfect release for Easter 😁

Back when it was released, everyone who have seen the movie came out questioning their existence XD

True. My friends and I had fun laughing at the possibilities. 1999 was a great year.

Neo and Trinity's relationship might have been more fleshed out when they filmed it, but you don't know what's on the cutting room floor so the film fits within a certain time frame.

This film was filmed in Sydney, good eye. It’s also why some of the extras (and Hugo Weaving) are from Australia
