Here’s what’s going on with the mrap. In the Afghanistan war, America realized it was losing 2-3 people a day from Taliban ambushes. The Mrap was their answer, heavily armored enough to ignore mines and most small arms. Then the US left Afghanistan, and realized it had a bunch of heavy armored trucks it didn’t think would be useful in the fight with China America is gearing up for. Mraps became military surplus equipment. Some of them went to the police, and around 200 of them went to Ukraine after we remembered we had these things lying around. These are not tanks, but their maintenance is a lot easier than that of a tank, and they can fill roles that tanks would otherwise have to fill, like driving over mines to make them explode. These are top quality, modern equipment, but designed for a different type of war entirely. Still, equipment hungry Ukraine will probably find some use for them.

The first generation MRAPs back in the 1970's and 1980's were used in conventional warfare as well as COIN operations. The Rhodesians used them in their COIN operations, while their MRAP designs were crude they did the job. South Africna designs were far more refined and used in conventional operations in Angola in large scale combat formations against FAPLA. Landmines were everywhere there just as they are now in Ukraine. It is a misconception that MRAP vehicles are designed specifically against Insurgents using IED's.
