Finally Ready! ► MORROWIND Modded & Buttery Smooth in OpenMW - Graphics Mods & Remaster

Ойындар

I've been waiting so long for this day! Morrowind has an open source engine replacement called OpenMW and last year I tried it and it was great without mods but with even my basic modlist it was laggy. Not anymore! OpenMW got an update and it changes how it renders object, lighting, and grass so that it's buttery smooth. Want to buy Morrowind (or other games) AND support this channel? The OpenMW project is a fan community at its best. I'd probably say the same thing about the people involved in developing and modding for Daggerfall Unity. There are plenty of things to criticize Bethesda for, but fortunately they chose not go after these projects the same way other companies have. Just look at brutality with which Take Two and Rockstar have gone after modders, only to then release shoddy, cash-grab 'remasters' of GTA3/Vice City/San Andreas.

    Actually, Bethesda theoretically cannot touch OpenMW since we are reimplementing stuff via clean-room reverse engineering. Remember that OpenMW is not a mod but a new game engine written from scratch. However, Bethesda could sue us and put an end to this project just with their financial power, not because they would be right. But we already had contact with them and they agreed to not take any steps to put us down if we refrain from promoting Morrowind assets on non-PC, non-Xbox platforms (e.g., Android). That's a gentleman's agreement and we will honor it.

    The performance is fantastic right out of the box, but the features are game changing. I play Project Tamriel, Tamriel Rebuilt and Tomb of the Snow Prince with the distant land option seemingly working automatically with the various land masses. It certainly doesn't feel small when you can see the mainland beyond the island's borders. I have a very vanilla version of the game. My only additional visual changes, other than what OpenMW provides, are Morrowind Enhanced Textures and normal maps. I've added more dialogue barks to the NPCs and replaced the Skeleton noises with those from Daggerfall (it's bone-chilling). I've also installed higher quality music, but I've left the other sounds intact with HRTF enabled in OpenMW's launcher. The lua support for the next release has the potential to reshape the modding landscape; I'm excited to see how the community utilizes that support.

    If you try to run openMW and run into an "flora.bsa not found" error message, here is how you fix it. This problem can occur when steam automatically synchronizes your morrowind.ini file (in your morrwoind folder with the data files). In your ini file there is a line that says something like Archive 3 = floraglow.bsa (probably because you needed it for a mod of one of your previous playthroughs). Chances are your ini contains stuff from mods you cannot even remember so it's best just get a vanilla ini file. The easiest way for me to fix my morrowind ini file was to deactive my steam cloud synchronization, download morrowind again and then to tell my openmw in the settings bar "Run Settings Importer" (the last bit is crucial because openMW still remembered the settings of my old ini file). Now it works for me

    Dl'd OpenMW because it's been - gulp - 19 years since I played Morrowind. And tbh? Everything looks like I remembered it... (not like vanilla, I didn't remember that at all!) Then I decided to follow your 30 min guide because grass would be nice... I didn't do the npc models because I remember them how they look, What you did with the other engine I did with openMW (wow, that made a change!) And did all the other mods...Dude? You dropped it like a BOSS! Holy molly! The game looks so different yet so familiar...? (after doing all the link things in openMW Launcher) It's messing with my head - in a good way! You are now worthy of the title: Diamond Gezer! Thanks fella! Gaw... Look at all this grass...! Wow, these textures are much better! And shadows! You can actually see shadows! And what's that... Enemy! Attack!!! I keep missing - ah how I remember you Morrowind - I'm dying! Run!!! Aaaand I'm dead. Good old Morrowind, how I've missed you... :)

    You are absolutely my favorite gaming channel and game-modding channel. I find your vibe so relaxing. Its like settling down to a story time. Thanks for this great video. I just got this game and want to get it looking good. After some Googling I came across OMW but I didn't really understand what it was or how to use it. Well after seeing this video I do! Thanks very much! The default out-of-the-box game wont even detect my graphics card. So I'm gonna get OMW. What a fantastic project it is. The modding community really blows my mind. Id like to also say one more thing - Bethesda gets slammed a lot these days but not by me! I say this because they THROW open the doors to modding in their games. They even provide the tools they used to make the game to modders. They also dont go after modders like some others out there.

  • @GamerZakh

    @GamerZakh

    Thank you! I'm really glad you enjoy the style. And yeah, Bethesda is very generous when it comes to modders. Their biggest act is simply not acting. By not going after projects like OMW and Daggerfall Unity, they just allow the community to do what many other communities can't.

    The latest version of OpenMW definitely brings a performance boost. I tend to use Tamriel Rebuilt as a benchmark, as there are some areas that cause problems, specifically the city of Old Ebonheart. With the newest version of OpenMW, the performance is a lot better in that area. However, the water shader seems to be the biggest source of fps drop.

    OpenMW is a free and open-source engine made from scratch to reimplement Morrowind's original engine. It is much more stable, multi-platform, usually provides better performance, and is compatible with all Morrowind mods except those relying on third-party software (e.g., MWSE). We also have an Android port, a multiplayer port and a WIP VR port. In short, if you want to play Morrowind, there is virtually no reason to not use our engine (unless you want to use MWSE mods, of course). Damn it, I missed the "yet" in your post. I'll post this response anyway. Might be useful to you or others. :-)

    @@Frygonz yeah I don’t like the UI but there are some mods that improve on it. I’ve gotten used to it tho and it’s not a problem for me anymore. Make sure you check the box for colored dialogue options or whatever it’s called in the OpenMW launcher. It makes it so that when you’ve said something to someone, that option gets grayed out indicating that you’ve already selected it previously. But yeah I feel like this game is kinda unplayable with mods. I think the only reason I Love this game is because of better balanced combat.
