Finally Picked up an EG4 Chargeverter 48V 100A Battery Charger

Ғылым және технология

I finally picked up an EG4 Chargeverter for use in my environment. Usually these are for cleaning up dirty generator power and putting it in your battery bank. I'm planning on using it just as a regular old charger, but unlike my current charger which is only 5amps, this one will let me charge up to 100amps!

    One thing I would recommend. Since you made your own non standard adapters. I would label them in an obvious way. To identify that they should only be used with the Chargeverter. So that Noone accidentally uses them for something else. That could be damaged by the wrong voltage. This is why you can't buy this type of adapter. Because all standard adapters have to be safe for anything that fits into the ends.

    I bought one out of fear. SS said in their video that running the generator through the inverter was a big reason for inverter damage. I have an 8750w inverter generator and a magnum 4500w inverter (which is bulletproof). When I had AGM batteries I was using the generator often during some of those cloudy day in the winter. I didn't always pay attention to how much gas was in it or didn't get out to shut it off right away and it would run out of gas. When it ran out it would spit and sputter causing the lights in the house to go on and off. I thought this probably wasn't good for anything including the inverter. I don't know if the chargeverter would protect against this kind of damage or not. 🤷‍♂️ I hooked up my new EG4 LL batteries at the same time I hooked up the chargeverter. I only used it to test it (I don't need the generator anymore😁). The Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries have a lot of usable power compared to the AGMs I had.

    Yeah, SS was warning about using generators with the Voltronic inverters. Either way, I think the chargeverter is a great idea. It's hard to find a decent, large amperage 48v charger. For me, my upgrade from lead-acid to LifePo4 was huge. You end up with so much more capacity!

    My inverter/charger is only split phase 120/240. My grid supply is 2 phase 120/208. I also have access to 3 phase generator that will supply 120/208. The Chargeverter works perfectly.

    Could you slap a power meter on the unit to show the power factor? That'll be of interest for people running them off generators to see how much energy is being lost. Leading and lagging would be useful too as that makes a difference too. There's harmonic on top of that but things start to get a bit technical. Lots of info via web searches on the effects of this for generators, including inverter types.

    I made a cable that has an L5-30P on one end and an L14-30R on the other with the correct wiring for the Chargeverter. I have an L14-30 generator inlet on the side of my house that allows me to plug either my 120v or 240v generator into the Chargeverter without rewiring anything.

    I've had one of those for a while now and it works quite well. Mine is wired into the busbars of my battery bank. I've also used to charge up new batteries to the same SOC as existing batteries before adding them to the battery bank. Feed mine with an old Generac 7.5KW gas powered generator at 240V. Note that EG4 specifically states that feeding the EG6 6500EX AC inputs with a generator voids the warranty. Apparently they've had serious issues with warranty claims from people who've tried feeding a non-inverter generator into the AC inputs to charge their batteries or pass thru to a house and have a lot of their units fail because of dirty power from flaky generators.

  • @AdamDeLay07

    @AdamDeLay07

    6 ай бұрын

    They work well! As far as the EG4 comment, do you have any place where they actually come out and state this besides if you talk to them on the phone? The latest copy of the manual only states that you can supply power from utility or generator. There's no warning. I know I've seen it mentioned on the forum, but if there's some big "issue" that they need people to be aware of, they need to actually inform people about it.

    @@AdamDeLay07 That was information I was given by Signature Solar. I was told that they had so many returns from damage caused by people connecting them to "dirty power" from cheap generators that they would no longer cover repairs caused by damage from people connecting generators directly to the AC inputs on the EG4 inverters. I just now went through my 6500EX manual also and I didn't see any mention of that. So at this point I don't know if that is coming from EG4 or just from Signature Solar. 😞

  • @AdamDeLay07

    @AdamDeLay07

    @@feetachemail Yeah, I've heard that mentioned as well. Just disappointing that if it's such a prevalent problem, they don't actually do any preventative warnings to people, they only mention the issues after the fact. They can't expect people to "know" what issues there are especially when the manual clearly states that generators can power the units. I would say it's a moot point because they sunset the 6500s, but there's still lots of people out there with those units.

    I've ordered the Chargeverter and supposed to arrive in March. I also have two new Anker f3800 power stations with their new Home Power Panel. The HPP is to arrive in March. My question to you is what Voltage and Amperage should I set the Chargeverter for to charge the f3800s via the DC input which is the XT60. The DC input has two XT60 male connectors. I have a relatively old GENERAC gas generator which has a 30 amp 120/240V connection rated 5500w running and 8500w surge. Instead of solar panels, I thought I'd use the gas generator to output to the Chargeverter and let it produce clean DC to my f3800s. I guess if I don't hear from you, I'll contact the place I bought the Chargeverter from....

    Unfortunately I'm not directly familiar with the F3800. I've seen some reviews on it but haven't had my hands on that device. If those are the PV input ports, I would be cautious putting the chargeverter on there. I've been told that some solar charge controllers bridge the positive and negative connection together once the battery is full. This is fine for a solar panel but it would short out your chargeverter.
