FINALLY! K24 1st Gen CRX/3rd Gen Civic First Start!!

K24 1st Gen CRX/3rd Gen Civic First Start!!
By Aaron Gaghagen and Brian Gillespie
It has been a long road. We know, this is only the third episode of this series, but where we are now is the product of many nights after work and weekends of effort. This isn’t the typical KZread project. This isn’t being put together to show proof of concept or to be wild to get clicks. This is a friend’s car that they have used to hit the track and autocross courses. This car has been taken care of while most of the cars of a similar vintage have long been put out to pasture.
We are finally at the part where we get to see the fruits of our labor, the first start. Last episode we thought we would get to the first start, but the CRX had other plans. When you’re one of the first people to do this swap, there are going to be hiccups. But, we think we have it all sorted out now.

Wow Brian, I never imagined having a K20 or K24 in a 1st gen CRX. Now THAT would be ALOT of fun! I almost bought a 1986 back in the day, but it fell through and I bought a 1989 DX and ended up swapping a JDM D15B VTEC into it, but this was back in 2002 or so. I also had a 1992 Acura Integra GS with a homemade turbo kit built out of mostly junkyard parts and the original SSAutoChrome turbo manifolds on eBay. It went on to make 256 whp on a 134k mile stock engine on 12 lbs of boost from a Dodge Daytona T3 turbo. I have ALWAYS wanted a first gen CRX with a K20 though. I even had a 1979 Civic 1200 that I always wanted to swap a B series into (this was WAY before the K series existed).

I took a sabbatical for some 10 or so years but came across a frontwd 1st gen wag-o-van with a perfect body and semi-running multiport. I've had DOHC ZC turbo swaps, D sohc vtec turbo swaps, b-series turbo, and even an h22 na swapped Delsol, but now I have the itch for k-series. This four-door wag-o-van is going to be amazing.. I'll be on the lookout for more on this crx!

Just a FYI that I figured out while trying to get a K swap finished up in a customers 98 Prelude is that the 02+ Honda CR-V manual shift cables are roughly 3-4 inces shorter than the 02+ RSX cables. I had originally installed the CR-V ones in the customers car and was scratching my head trying to get them to fit thinking that I had routed them incorrectly. Removed them and compared them to the RSX side by side and on the floor and had the "ahh-haa!" moment. Just thought I'd share it with you as it might help in future installations with other projects! Love the channel and the products you offer! My customers 98 Prelude K24 Awd conversion wouldn't be near completion with out your swap mounts! Keep up the great work! Chris w/R Tuned Motorsports

Yeah, it sucks being out here. The only legal chassis for a K swap is an EK/EM chassis(96-00) because they have a stronger body or some shit. I think you can do 94-01 Integras also but i don’t know for sure.

  • @VTECAcademy

Nah, the body strength doesn't factor in with the swap. It all boils down to being emissions compliant. CARB has the requirements listed on their website. Once you meet those requirements, you can take it to the Bureau of Automotive Repair to get it approved. Here's a great post on it from k20a.org www.k20a.org/threads/bard-k20a.191706/

Also, this swap would've been REALLY cool in my 1986 Prelude Si survivor that I had. The A20A was just a turd. It was actually Road and Track's test car in 1986. Nothing fits good in a 88-91 Prelude. I should know, I have been swapping engines in them for years now. Those are the lowest hoodlines ever made. Beautiful cars but not affordable to innovate in due to they share nothing with all the other Honda's. Ground clearance or hood clearance you can only choose 1, not both unless you don't mind cutting up a none existant hood.

Correct, it’s an aftermarket aluminum radiator. We flipped 180 to put the outlets on the drivers side. Brian can share his source.

I got it on eBay. It is a first gen Scirocco/Rabbit radiator.

Intake goes down and sits behind the headlight. Going to build a block off panel to keep hot air from the radiator going to it. I’m also going to run a scope in the bumper that will feed air right to the filter. I had this same setup with the B16 and it worked great.

We covered this in one of the videos but the hood will close without cutting the under skin. My hood was already skinned, for weight savings, and I decided to run my K20 at the higher mounting position. So more cutting was needed to clear things like the manifold. I could have dropped the motor but wanted the extra 3/4 in ground clearance

That would be moving! Don’t think it would run that on the current setup though.
