Finally A Chorus Pedal I Want On My Board - TC Electronic SCF GOLD!
Музыка
I've always struggled to find modulation pedals that I actually like. I grew up in the '80s where you didn't hear a guitar unless it was completely over-saturated in chorus and over the years that take its toll to where you end up liking less effects on your guitar tone. Now everything has changed since James brought over his TC Electronic SCF STEREO CHORUS FLANGER. I loved this so much that I ordered one straight away.
Please note that this is not a sponsored video James and myself have paid for these pedals out of our own money.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

I have an original from the early 90's and is A/c powered. I don't have it on my current board but I still have it. It sounds great in mono and phenomenal in stereo. One of the all time classics for sure.
And again, this was the only missing piece in my pedalboard! Thanks to you guys, I just got mine today.
A lot of good sounds in that little box!
Just ordered mine lol! Thanks for the demo. Les Paul tones OMG!
I love this chorus. So rich and fill of flavor
Need this in my life. Like most TC stuff they run out but gonna place an order asap. Lovely tones from it. Going on my board.
The envy I have for that strat and the Matchless is almost embarrassing.
Is this love! A favourite for chorus enthusiasts!
I have one of the original pedals from the 80s. What is great here is that you get top loading jacks and the sleeper is that you get three effects in one pedal, which can save you some pedalboard space. I've heard that this product was TC Electronic's first product (?)
Sounds great. Funny thing is I like it now. I hated the original back in the day. Chorus is best when you set it so that you don’t notice it until you turn it off

I played the second half of an entire gig a couple of years ago with the chorus left on by accident. It was on low and I had the fattest tone! Only noticed afterwards when noodling and turned it off. No wonder people like Bonamassa have one very subtly doing it’s thing in the background for big live gigs.

Yes! Chorus to me is best when you don’t notice it, but even then it adds a lot of air and depth to the sound.

I know what you mean - some set it with way too much 'wibble'.
I fell in love with all these sounds as a teen in the eighties, and while I still love some of that music, heavy chorus or flanger is just not among the sounds I want my guitar to make today. Thanks for the content; great channel.

Yup, same here haha. Love the pedal but I went mental with chorus pedals back in the 80s and I don't think I've used one since the 2000s started. Lovely pedal though, great Floyd sound and love how James wants to jam out all the Gilmour riffs while Paul stares nervously from the side :)

Guess y’all have never heard of shoegaze or dream pop. Younger people are into it. Honestly you sound old going ‘i liked it in the 80s but i’m too cool for chorus these days!’

@@sub-jec-tiv Oh, I don’t just sound old. I am old.
I ordered one of these with the gold paint. It’s backordered to January 😑. I’m pretty excited, I still have the one I got in the early 90’s. Mine always stayed in the PM position.
I wanted one of these for a long long time. The Dimension C Waza Craft and my old 18v DanElectro Cool Cat are now resigned to storage since I got my SCF. For the Chapman Stick, along with the Analogman BiComprossor, well it's 95% of my sound now. Just perfect.
It sounds amazing.
Yep....I'm having one of those! Cheers!!
love that strat finish
Great review chaps.
Had the original. Loved the always on input gain.
Have had a Mxr Phase since the 70s . Still use one today. Chorus came and went over the years . But Phase is here to stay . Mxr Phase 95 is an awesome multi use modulation . Does a usable faux Trem/Vib, Leslie, Univibe in addition to killer phase . In a tiny 1knob 1 button footprint. Flanger is way too specific . Do like TC chorus though. Next to a Boss ( The definition of the effect) they are a great alternative.
I finally got mine and have played around with it enough to know I love it. I watched this video awhile ago, so I don't remember is you mention it, but I noticed the input gain on the SCF remains active when the pedal is bypassed. I love the input gain for use with the effect, but I really like having this ability for the purposes of tweaking the tone especially when using two amps. EDIT: HA! It took you under 3 minutes to mention it :)
Love that pedal.
great sound
I came for the pedal but stayed for the awesomely beautiful strato.
I have at least ten different chorus pedals. I need to try one of these! Thanks.
I have one of the older TC SCF units that a friend gave me. Not the best flanger I've ever used, but acceptable, and the chorus can sound crystalline, as you've ably demonstrated. The original provides the delay chip and circuit with 15V, via the onboard power transformer. The reissue takes a 9V external supply. I don't know if it is converted to a higher voltage internally. One of the differences between the SCF and many other commercial chorus units is that it employs a compander chip to get optimum signal-to-noise ratio and quiet performance, instead of a simple treble pre-emphasis/de-emphasis, like one finds on so many analog chorus and flanger pedals (including the venerable CE-2 and Small Clone). To my ears, the Boss CE-1 does a better job of vibrato (what TC calls "pitch modulation" here), because it converts the triangle sweep generator to a sine wave (or close enough to it) for the vibrato setting, which is more suitable for vibrato. I'm also quite partial to the Boss DC-2 Dimension C (I have a cheaper but equal quality Behringer clone of it) which provides a wobble-less chorus sound. The DC-2 uses companding, which is good, and *two* counterswept delays, instead of one, as in the SCF and may other chorus units. By having one delay path always be a little sharp when the other is a little flat, one doesn't notice the modulation quite as much as with conventional chorus units like the SCF. The other perk is that using a single delay chip mimics a second voice, where using two now sounds like three musicians copying each other - the very definition of chorus. Both combine to make it sound thicker.

Incredible nuggets of info in this comment, thanks! 👍🏻
Chaps- you really gotta hook it up in stereo to realise its full potential … use mine live with two HW Vox AC15’s - ludicrously huge tones…

Your chorus pedal is better than my chorus pedal 🙁 Sounds great.
Just bought one of these... was looking for a STEREO ANALOG flanger in the chain before my Eventide DSP7000...and the chorus is a bonus ! Cant believe the price of £130 !
Okay…. I love it. There isn’t a bad sound in it. It’s not cheap but want it. Oh heck…. Been looking for a nice Chorus pedal…. Why did I have to see this…. Btw, what settings did you use to get those Floyd sounds..?
I will just get it for the Jhon Sykes tone. Thank you
Have you tried a jam pedal chorus? Awesome chorus sound.
I just got my SCF Gold. I like it much better than the Walrus Julianna . The TC just sounds more natural and lets your guitar's natural sound and picking attack still come through , just adds beautiful chorus to it.

now u gotta try the tc rack 1210 chorus hehe. Also the vintage mxr analog chorus is pretty similar in being flat eq and more detuney.
The tone you get with that strat and amp is great. I have a CE2 and I am planning to buy this one. Is it an home pedal drive at the end ?
I had to order one from Australia to get one of these brand new. Looking forward to getting it. Not sure how long something takes to get to the USA from Australia. Paid $201 ($248.98 after tax / shipping)
I am so torn....I just bought the TC SCF and loving it but I also own a Strymon Ola of which I love also. Both are fabulous pedals. I like the TC better though because of the warmth and the analog aspect it. The Ola is great a little to digital sounding which is fine also. So I guess I'll keep them both and swap occasionally.
I love chorus
You should try analogworm triangle mk3 chorusl/vibrato pedal, I think it might surprise you even more than tc... Cheers!
Cheers chaps, insta-buy after hearing that!
Great sounds! Apparently Luke is using one to these days! :)
Sweet.. chorus and flange in one box. To bad they didn't set it up so you can save different settings for both and toggle between the two.. oh well.. we can't have everything for 130 quid.. right?
Got a couple ideas from this…thanks!
Dammit. There goes my money. Thanks guys. 🍻
I love that masterbuilt fender you are playing. But holy shit they are expensive given it’s still a bolt on neck with no carving.

Agreed. I recently read an article wherein Jeff Beck discussed his playing history with the Gibson Les Paul, noting the craftsmanship, feel, and overall finish of the guitar compared to a Fender, which he labelled as a cheap guitar (presumably both in price and feel). It is hard to reckon with the prices of Fender's Custom Shop compared with Gibson's Murphy Lab.
Hi Paul, what year and model is your lovely LP gold top? Another fantastic demo! K
Well now I know why mine doesn’t sound that huge. I was running in the effects loop and not the front. I have the same Chorus on my board and.
Question, is it still on the board a year later? If not what replaced it?
6:05 the effect on the piano part of Pink Floyd's echoes
@TheStudioRats Between this TC Electronic Chorus/Flanger and a Boss CE-1, which pedal would be best for hitting that Eric Clapton Live Aid 1985 & Montreux 1986 Chorus Drive sound he had during the 1980’s.
Had an original…like an idiot I sold it. Used prices have gotten insane, so I got one of these. It’s everything I remember
My buddy had one of the original TC chorus/flangers back in the early 90s. I always liked the chorus itself but I really hated what the pedal did to the signal. It somehow removed all the dynamics of the direct signal and made it thin and trebly and rather harsh. Of course a bit of high end EQ helps the effect itself, stand out more, but the tone itself was awful. I would only ever use it in some kind of parallel loop or effects loop, I’d NEVER compromise my direct chain with it. I tried very hard to like it but it thwarted all my atttemps ….
I have the purple one , 90s

I wonder if this pedal's stereo chorus is done by separate bbd circuits for each channel? Let's say if you record in stereo and later mix or play it back into mono, the chorus will be lost. Please enlighten me.
