It´s sad that you ran out of time to finish properly this awesome VANOS rebuild. Very important parts that would have been important to see, the sequence of tightening all the hub bolts/rotation and the final result starting the engine :) Anyway, a pleasure to see, it´s a non easy job specially the first time that you tackle it, because you double/triple check everything, read a million times the procedures, and as you say, if you´re not sure what you´re doing, you can create a mess. I´m not professional, but let´s say skilled, I love DIYs and understand the basics of the car mechanics. Your channel is great, and it´s a hard job not only the daily job at the shop, but preparing everything for the recording, lights, cameras, etc... and arriving home and spend tons of hours editing. You guys do a really hard job, and specially for us the E46 lovers ;) Keep on the great work and all the best ;)

Not a DIY job for me tbh.. but hugely interesting.. thanks for uploading.. Out of pure curiosity does the VANOS on my E90 N46B20 engine resemble that of the S54 in the video?

03:19 Correct me if I´m wrong, but you might leave a 5mm gap between the block and VANOS body before start screwing the first pair of bolts...

I’m planing on doing the vanos device myself I got most of the parts already and tools just need the locking pin. Is the special crankshaft socket needed also? Or depends year to year ? I have a 02 m3

Thanks for the great video. At the 5:00 you tighten the 4 bolts, But then immediately loosen them again. I fully installed the vanos the step before while everything was slightly loose. Everything appears timed correctly. What's the point of tightening and then immediately loosening? Do I have to do this for the third time? :)

Dr Vanos sais that you need to see 4-5mm of the helical gear. In order to get that you need a 5-10mm gap between the vanos and the head. If not your timing is off right? Love your vlogs, just wanted to make things clear.

What was the point of tightening the hub bolts and backing them out to mount the vanos unit and retighten again. You cant just leave them hand tight till you bolt down the vanos and then tighten them?

One important thing so as not to get a Cel Light ! Before tightening down Hubs you need a 100 mm Gap for Proper adjustment and Timing to advance ,I bet he had a code after the hubs where tighten incorrectly ! And if not then this would be one step that is not necessary. Hope we get feed back ! Please If installing new splines you can pre mark them same way ,Just install without vanos and make sure they go into the Hubs as far as Possible then mark accordingly and follow Shop life easy instructions !!!

Hi, your video is quite helpful. I am having and issue with timing however. I pre-tension and tighten the vanos>head then tighten the top hub bolts and timing remains ok. I then turn the crank 1 turn to get the other hub bolts, I turn the crank back 1 more turn to TDC w/ cam lobes 45° to finish tightening the top hubs bolts. Once the cams are retarded my timing is slightly off it in this both cams are slightly ~.6mm off they are off CCW. I have slack in the timing chain so when I do the final rotation my timing is ruined, how do I account for the slack? I've tried adjusting the cams and they end up in the same place every time. I was thinking if I set the cams slightly out of time (CCW) then when the hub bolts were tightened and chain slack accounted for they might end up within spec after the final rotation to check timing.

Btw, you’re making this procedure way, way more complicated than it should be. The ideal, most efficient and easiest procedure is to lock the valve train using the cam locking tool. It locks the cams in time to the crank. Then and only the you can remove the VANOS unit and all 12 bolts without all the fuss of having to crank the engine over manually to tighten the cam bolts. All that is done with the VANOS removed. I’ve done this 3 times already. You already have the proper tools and skill, but lacking in the details which make a job much, much easier
