Final Ride on the Historic 1928 OTIS Elevator at the City Building Asheville NC
(May 2022) A HUGE thanks to the City of Asheville for allowing this video to happen. This was shot during the last week of the operation of the last original car. These elevators were modded and tastefully so. Next time I am in Asheville NC I will shoot an after take so I can post a proper before and after video.

Thank you! Cheers!
Just curious, what happens if you run a manual elevator past the top /bottom floor? Does it stop and let you go back down or do you hit the final limit and get stuck?
@DieselDucy
6 ай бұрын
MOST of them including this will auto stop before the limit switch but some older ones will just hit the limit switch.
Ah, those good old-fashioned elevators with the control lever, sliding doors and folding interior gates, and exterior floor level gauges with the moving indicators above the doors! 🙂

Vintage elevators do not last forever. It's probably costing a lot more to maintain them than it's worth. Especially when it comes to trying to find parts for them when they are no longer being made. And they probably don't meet current regulations for elevator safety. So that's why they need to be modernized

Even some of the modern elevators be broken quicker than the classic ones. Elevators like this one last longer.

SACRELIDGE! There should have been protesting in the streets over those elevators being modernized! I would have rather them remixed The Beatles into Techno or Dub Step before modernizing those. That one looked like it ran perfectly.

So sad to see these beautiful elevators being replaced by regular ones! I can understand it’s hard to hire elevator operators, but they could have preserved one of the cars in its original state! We need to keep proof of our past technologies! Were you able to collect some of the fixtures?

They are leaving the car switches in the cars. I was given a plate out of one of the elevators. TOTALLY agree with your post of leaving one original.

On those manually controlled elevators, how did the operator know which floor was calling it when someone pushed the call button?
@LittleRockElevators

There's a panel above the crank with the number of floors and it will light up and buzz when someone on that floor calls it.

I don´t talk either. Simply because I try to film everything that´s need to be seen, so that there won´t be any spoken explanations necessary. And if so, I put them into the descriptions of my videos, in two languages. BTW: epic elevator, sad that it gets modernized. Things like these should be kept.
