The wealth factor leapt to mind as a second consideration--after proximity to those three countries. Size, too--such a small country in area with a population that size, but picture that intense cluster of homes hugging the hillsides. Monaco is the only place that fits all these considerations.

There aren't very many Swiss there (2.5% of the population). The largest population groups in order are French, Monegasque, Italian, British, Belgian, German, Swiss, and US. The question was about the two largest and the sixth largest groups. The odd thing about Monaco is that the native-born population is a minority.

  • @BlueCrystalTear

@@haroldbrooks9821 the Swiss thing threw me off for that reason. Perhaps they should have said British instead, because then I'd have been more likely to say Monaco. Monaco is a city-state (and is among the world's smallest countries) so the native-born population being a minority is not a surprise since that's small to begin with and moving just four miles means you're in France.

Every tax haven is full of rich people from around the world. Or, far more often, their money. Park your money in foreign real estate, you don't have to pay a dime, here or there. Buy thousands of units of homes. Prevent anyone from living there. You keep ownership of property your home country can't tax you for, and the local government promises not to charge you either. Meanwhile, no taxes are collected anywhere on your billions for the funding of social programs, and people can't even live in the units you bought, because you'd rather not draw attention to the fact that they exist. Its more corrupt than even shipping registry.

Monaco's population as of this year is around 41,000. Lichtenstein's population this year is about 39,000. Jeopardy didn't get it wrong any more or less than you did. Populations constantly change. They are never static and quiz shows are almost always 2-3 years behind such statistics including Jeopardy. The rest of the question is approximately correct. Rich folk flock to their own. Princess Grace wasn't even happy in Monaco, and her husband, Prince Rainier, kept cheating on her nonetheless. Her death was horribly tragic, but as a beautiful middle class American woman, she never felt comfortable in 50s America. And felt worse in this simulation of 19th-century Europe too.

Come on now. This is pretty easy. There's only one tiny country in between Italy and France. The Swiss part could throw you off, but the Swiss are just rich and move to Monaco, I guess. Malta has way over 38,000 people. It has over half a million, actually. Liechtenstein is nowhere near France and doesn't even border Italy. Nearly everyone there speaks German (Swiss German, I'd imagine) and so it doesn't make sense that French and Italian people would live there.

Monaco does not border Italy. Why does everyone keep saying this? It is surrounded by France on all side, except the seaside. Lichtenstein is closer to Switzerland than Monaco is, and is not that far France, as the crow flies.

@@mickeyrube6623 First of all, it's literally 11KM from Monaco to Italy. It's a 20 minute drive. That is essentially nothing. I said that it's in between France and Italy, which it basically is. I didn't say they bordered, did I? I guess I wasn't 100% correct. 2nd of all, obviously Liechtenstein is closer to Switzerland. It literally borders it. The Swiss in Monaco are there because they are wealthy and go there. Monaco is not close to Switzerland. However, Liechtenstein is not very near France, either. It's over 2 hours to drive to the nearest point and is nearly 200km away. Even as the crow flies, it's over 152km away. More importantly, Liechtenstein is completely dominated culturally by Swiss German/ Austrian alpine culture and has little to do with French culture. It may have slightly more to do with Italian culture, but not much. It's about 82km to the Italian border from Liechtenstein.

Liechtenstein is the last vestage of the Holy Roman Empire. A tiny, feudal realm, ruled by a prince who owes his position only to his lineage. Good thing for him such things, post-WW2-in-the-West are considered cute and quaint.

@@mickeyrube6623 The whole greater Monagasque/Nicoise area was Italian until the 1850s. When it was turned over to France through peaceful diplomacy. From one Latinate aristocracy to another. Whatever. It's the Riviera, baby. Everyone is rich and partying. Who cares about the language. Both languages are beautiful.
