    My dad's theory about the "final girl" is (according to him) based on men's natural desire to protect women, especially young "good" girls. The final girl is basically a daughter, and the fear comes from not wanting her to be hurt and the satisfaction of her being able to defend herself against attack. Which is why she's so strong, intelligent, sexless, and reliable. She's basically a prefect daughter. But then again my dad did raise only girls, so it makes sense he'd interpret them this way.

    VERY good episode. I do think horror would benefit from more male leads that did fall apart, cry and get scared when the killer comes for them. Jesse from Nightmare On Elm Street 2 is a really good character, and falling apart when a guy is trying to kill you just makes sense. Plus, guys relating to guys that are emotionally honest is a really good thing. To many guys act to hard to be super men and put their none strong feelings on the back burner, and that's just not healthy.

  • @PungiFungi

    @PungiFungi

    5 жыл бұрын

    That’s not going to work...socially we accept women to express fear and we have a bigger emotional reaction seeing a female victim. If a guy runs away screaming and shivering with fear he would be label a wimp...even though that would be a realistic reaction, the audience will not sympathize with a frightened male character. Slasher films rely on the fear victim has of the killer and the audience rooting for the Final Girl.

    I know times have changed but we still have to keep some strong alpha men in the world to fight the bad guys. Don't get me wrong, I love it when the badass girl kicks ass especially when there's a male character being a total wimp on screen but I feel like that guy is going to be hard pressed to find any sympathy from the audience.

    I think what some women like myself love about final girls as they’ve progressed is that you get to see women kicking ass. I LOVE how final girls have evolved over the years. They’re not just the girls who don’t have sex anymore, as we’ve seen in movies like Scream, where Sidney has sex and survives the film. These girls come from tons of different backgrounds and are tough, kickass women who think clearly and give young women and girls a chance to be the hero. Like Erin in You’re Next, or even Ripley from Alien! I feel like, for a long time, girls just didn’t get to feel like they had “hero” role models to look up to. For me, watching Nancy Thompson kick Freddy Krueger’s ass or any of the heroines from the Friday the 13th series take down Jason was my first introduction to women kicking ass on film. It made me feel like I was represented on film, as weird as that might sound. Boys had Batman and Superman, but girls had Nancy setting stealth traps and Ripley taking absolutely NO shit from the Xenomorph. For all of the flaws horror has, it’s given us ladies the chance to feel like we really have a place in the movies. Again, I don’t know if any other women feel this way, but I’ve always loved seeing how the final girl perseveres.

    FOR 22:46, To the point about stark counterexamples of drawn out deaths, I think Nightmare on Elm St, is very equal in how it draws out the deaths, or any movie that focuses on quality 'dying.' SAW even has very drawn out deaths for male main characters, it's just the nameless one's are male too which offset that and males are not attacked for being male. But I think a lot of it too is that women elicit more sympathy than men. In our society, we want to see men protect women, so the killing of male figures first is just a natural social pairing (people, men and women alike, expect their husband to face danger first) while the drawn out death of women shows how brutal a killer is because the woman is seen as more fragile and empathetic. Furthermore, that makes the woman all the more heroic looking if she beats the killer, because again, society expects a man to protect and women to be protected, so when a man fails to protect, and woman is then killed because of that failure or has to protect herself, that is FAR more scarier for a mostly male audience than their own destruction. Just think back to Titanic. Women and children first. Men are very much okay with their death if it means protecting women. The scarier part is the prospect of not being able to do so which is what the climax of that movie hinges on. Not the male dying, but the male possibly failing to save the woman.

    I think that that is probably true, at least to an extent. It's kind of partially what I've always believed. Like I had thought of it more as 'Women tend to be more physically vulnerable/weak, so when the killer kills off all the men they have no one to 'protect' them and it's scarier. And that a woman beating a male killer is seen as less likely.' Idk but that's probably part of the psychology of it all. Although I'm sure it's a mix of a lot of things.

    This is so interesting to listen to. It's also kind of fun to compare movies from the time period mentioned in the essay to more modern movies in how their "final girls" have changed and just how other tropes have been modified. That's part of why I loved the first Scream movie so much, it has fun with established horror tropes and they're followed by the killers yet it also turns some tropes (for example, the killer being two conventionally attractive teenage boys rather than a big deformed monster of a man a la Jason).

    I always understood that men are killed more efficiently and more often just to show the power of enemies and increase the perceived helplessness of the Final Girl. Men have traditionally been told to base their worth on 1:Ability in bed and war, and 2:Ability to raise and provide for a family, so a great deal of men who fight back end up killed instantly and rendered useless and impotent to show the male viewership that any amount of strength is not enough. The care taken in the death of women may also be aimed to increase the horror of the male audience. Both men being rendered impotent and women being killed in much more detail are purposefully and instinctively aimed at a male audience. On top of the "being physically bested in a fight" I believe the death right before, during, or after sex has to do with fear of impotence in love life. Being killed while picking up a girl, having your coitus or afterglow cut short, and more importantly having the girl you just boinked not able to live on and continue to appreciate your ability to boink all pull at male fears of impotence. For men who worry about being "good enough" for women, premature death is an obvious allegory to premature ejaculation when we remember the french euphemism for orgasm is "La petite mort" or "The little death." Its often teens having sex because your teens to mid 20s are a mans most virile age and the most likely time to feel societal pressure and be judged by your peers. Its using male gender roles involving women that society sees as positive in order to undermine them and produce horror in its main audience: wanting to protect a woman but failing. We simply need to look at horror like Cujo or The Babadook to see female gender roles used in the same way as male gender rolls, exploiting societies positive gender rolls of motherhood: wanting to protect your children but failing. Both of these movies are exploiting a facet of human relationship to play upon gender role related fears. The difference between the two being motherhood is a very 1on1 relationship while "the relationship between men and women" is more nebulous and lets you kill a lot of people as you transfer between different relationships. --- In summary I believe slashers are tailored to the emotions of young men who are worried about their physical ability to protect themselves/others or are insecure about their sexual prowess (on top of the general fear of death). There are obviously horror movies that are exploitative to the point of actual misogyny, yet sometimes putting a woman in a position of powerlessness is used to make the men watching the movie feel powerless as well. All things considered the question I am not equipped to answer is: Does injuring a woman in a movie to take advantage of "Men should protect women" societal roles cause negativity for women and society? I grew up male and a foot taller than the national average so I got a double dose of male gender roles while growing up. Everything I say is through a hugely biased lens; There are thousands of lenses to see this entire situation through and I just hope I didn't come off as misogynistic, bigoted, or sexist because of this.

    This is only the second episode of the podcast that I've listened to, and it made me want to stick around. So many people are afraid to look deeper at horror films and use words like feminist and gender. This is the stuff I live for. Also, if you haven't done a video about Idle Hands, please do that.

    Hot Take: The queen xenomorph is an insect like creature. Many insects have matriarch system that is genuinely terrifying. Female mantises will devour their weaker male partners after mating. Tarantula hawks will paralyze their prey and lay eggs inside of them, once hatched they will devour the host from inside out. The xenomorph is not evil because of her femininity, she is a threat to the humans because it is two competing species that cannot coexist by their very nature. One is invasive, the other is parasitic and territorial.

    I appreciate these types of videos immensely. I have watched almost all of the videos on the Dead Meat channel despite not being a fan of horror movies (I get scared RIDICULOUSLY easily). However, I find your discussion and commentary videos about the horror genre incredibly engaging, interesting, and informative. Your channel, including the Kill Counts, help me to be able to be part of numerous social conversations about the genre because many of my friends and family are interested in horror. As a recent college graduate, I absolutely love academic articles and analyzing the social repercussions popular tropes. Thank you for all of the thoughtful work you are doing with this channel! It is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed!

    I LOVE this. I would love to see you guys dive deeper into it, without so much fear and caution. Chelsea especially seems super passionate, informed, and interested in this topic and subject. But she’s restraining herself so much out of fear of offending the very people who accuse women of being too offended. I want to hear you talk about different analysis of the horror genre, I wanna hear every point explained in depth and why and how you agree or disagree with it. I love the simplest things you guys do. Watching you talk about all this is so interesting I want more. Sorry for rambling! Love you guys so much

    Tashayla Borden absolutely! Clover's essay and theory is extremely white, especially since the genre at the time is verrrryyy white. I wrote an essay about the final girl trope for my final paper in one of my last college film classes, and I’m very proud of it. I used Scream as the basis for the paper, but obviously looked at the genre as a whole. I never fully understood the argument that slasher movies hate women, as plenty of men tend to die in horrific ways as well, and the final girl is almost always associated with the genre
