And just like that, Elden Ring DLC announcement and the beginning of FFXVI coverage in one day.
Congrats on getting this opportunity, the thumbnail photo is awesome! Excited to watch this one!!!

Clive pulling enemies towards him when he's using Garuda powers reminds me so much of Nero's snatch ability in DMC4/5 where he would also pull enemies towards him, which makes sense with the DMC5 combat director doing the combat for this.

I have never been this much excited for a game for years. Best video game franchise of all time. can't wait to to receive my collector's edition in less than 4 month :D
I've been playing FF since Fighter, Blkblt, Wht Mage, Blk Mage, and never would I have imagined I'd be seeing something this amazing 30 years later. I'm glad to meet fans on FFXIV that are psyched for this because it will be their first main series game! I understand exactly what Yoshi P is aiming for. He's trying to bring us greybeards AND the young blood in at once. I hope he can pull it off because this looks great so far.

@Mysterious Mr. L Agreed. Helps that the director and the dev team haven't been juggled between several projects through its dev time and taken away to focus on other stuff, like in the case of FF Versus, to then become the mess that is XV. Really glad to see that the many flaws of XV's combat aren't present in XVI, as far as I can see from this preview. I'm confident that the story won't be shit either.
Oh wow I did NOT expect this! can't wait to listen to this!
They already had me at the Heavensward lead writer but this combat looks just as high quality.
Definitely loving the world aethestic, very grim and dark medieval world, just hoping there is huge attention to detail on the armor like using proper sheaths in the spirit of Witcher 3.

Sounds like they're going for a mix of Dante and Nero's playstyles with the eikon switching instead of the devil arm switching and Clive just having Nero's snatch. Regarding the "JRPG term controversy", I found an interesting take on Maximillian Dood's reaction video that I wanted to share with you: "About the JRPG thing, I have a bit of a unique perspective I'd like to share. I lived 8 years in Japan. Went over there to try and break into the industry... actually did it for a couple of years and worked at a very well-known company for a couple of years (not Square Enix). Anyway, I think the term JRPG was taken as offensive for Japanese developers for a number of reasons. It's not as simple as the negative connotations that sprung up at around the same time as FFXIII, though that's obviously a big part of it. What happens is that, for the longest time (and even today), they've used the term "youge" as a derogative for western games. They didn't even consider them "games" proper (see, "videogames", according to them, were "a Japanese thing" -- and I'm quoting Hideo Kojima here.) I was actually shocked at how disdainful the term "youge" actually was when I went there. Well, right at the time FFXIII came out, the Japanese game industry was declining rapidly in terms of market share. They needed to sell games in the west to survive, but they weren't doing it well. Today, the Japanese game industry is a cell-phone gacha fest, a shadow of its former self. Western developers were putting out console games, good ones, and selling gang-busters. And now Japanese developers were like "how are we supposed to compete with this? It's not fair! We don't have the budget, we don't have the sales!" And it's against this backdrop that the term JRPG began to be used. Regardless of the negative connotations it had over here, over there it was much worse, because 1) they were losing literally 90% of the market, 2) they'd always thought of themselves as making RPGs and 3) they had the term "youge" as an analog. So they automatically assumed that JRPG was as bad as "youge", and, especially as you're losing almost all of your market, that's gotta sting. What I think is that the term was being used negatively by some people at the start, but not all of them, and certainly it's become purely descriptive nowadays. But in Japan they resented the rebranding of the genre, and assumed it was like when they rebranded western games as "youge". The Japanese game industry narrative is this: "RPGs" were not intuitive and could not be enjoyed by a mainstream audience until the Great Yuji Horii came and made Dragon Quest; and they were a hit in Japan but not in the West, because the games were, in FF creator Hironobu Sakaguchi's words, too "complex" for Western audiences (nevermind that the genre originated in the West - but prejudice is never rational). However, thanks to the cutting-edge graphics pioneered by Final Fantasy, they started selling in the West, too. "Final Fantasy" is the big Japanese RPG franchise that sells in the West, too. Anyway, Yoshi P in particular has to have taken the JRPG classification personally, as he was one of the few Japanese gamers who actually did appreciate Western games. He played the original Ultima Online! He played Everquest! So for him to hear that term, and having "youge" as a point of reference, it must have really been awful. Its...complicated... Japanese society as a whole has both disdain and admiration -both superiority and inferiority complexes- with regards to the West. I would have trouble understanding it if I did not have very specific point of reference myself. Well, here's hoping someone takes the trouble to read this post, and that it helps shed some light on the issue."
Combat sounds a lot like Nero and Dantes (and V with Torugal I suppose) DMCV kits combined and built up with a FF stand point. DMCV has my favorite combat in any game ever so I'm so excited for this.
Ok, i'm confused... the Ifrit/Garuda battle shown during the 17:00 mark in the video... is it basically a cutscene or not? Showing damage and health bars, but the player only pressed buttons 3-4 times? It's basically a cutscene right? Like can you actually lose here other than perhaps by choice of not hitting the buttons?

@xVmbra

@@fantasytky28 It's disappointing because back then you would summon something and it did one attack and that was it (or it actually stays and fights like in FF X, which was pretty cool). On the other hand this is ''let me summon ifrit'' and it's 4 hours of cutscene pressing a button now and then. It's a BIG waste of time (much bigger than old summons) and breaks the pace completely. This is a big, big useless spectacle. I feel like it's dumb and a waste of time to have Devil May Cry staff working on this game to put several minutes of cutscenes with QTEs.

@@fantasytky28 Nah, I'm not thinking this is going to happen many times, i'm assuming its going to be similar to summons in FF XV (which had horrible absolutely non-factor summon system), but still it's a horrible idea this several long minute cutscene with QTE for this: -If it happens after you've won, what's the point? -Can you miss? Can you fail? If you already won what is the point of having the chance to miss a QTE? Can you actually win the fight and then miss the QTE and lose? You see what I mean, I'm ok with the cutscene but why the QTE, just have the summon do the finishing move as a cinematic ''fatality'' of sorts, but even then... it's too long, it's just so weird cause it feels like it's trying to do 2 different incompatible things.

I also want to point out that I love Yoshi-P efforts to have people be overwhelmingly excited for 16 and that excitement carry on to an eventual 17. That is why he want to evolve the series and the JRPG genre, so both are not beholden by a fix preconceived notions or elements (such as the turn based combat). A little bit of context to explain my comment: The original Final Fantasy was basically an adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons, using almost the exact same combat as D&D, which became a staple of FF. Having a party with an ensemble cast with different classes, abilities and backstories is not something unlike the parties of D&D either. So after experimenting with many titles and making risk with every and each one of them, Yoshi-P and his team are making an RPG like nothing before has happen in the history of the franchise. I think Yoshi-P has the right idea if he’s the one to bring FF to the mainstream again like it was in 80’s through the early 00’s. Because at the end of the day Final Fantasy has and it always have been, an IP that reinvents itself each game.

Holy shit this looks good. Shame I only own a pc
Game looks incredible and I'm excited to play, but the only thing Final Fantasy about it, is the Eikons and their classic FF names.
We found where they put the FF14 belts!
So I'm pretty well fed for traditional RPGs these days. So long as Atlus & Sega, Falcom, even SE's non-Final Fantasy games, plenty of others too, keep delivering I'm great. But it still super weirds me out that Final Fantasy has now become a character action game + Asura's Wrath. And I specifically say Asura and not QTEs because Asura's Wrath owns and I want to be positive here. But it's really weird. Brad's positivity helps me get a little excited as opposed to my prior extreme skepticism. I trust the guys opinion of a good combat system. The art is obviously fantastic as well and more important, to me, it really hits inside my wheelhouse. Garuda is just a kaiju'd out version of a specific Devilman character. That's kind of sick. There's Go Nagai vibes all over this actually. I'm still worried the combat is going to be style over substance though. Despite the pedigree and Brad's approval. Something about it is just giving me "Mash attack while incredibly expensive, and impressive, attack animations play out." I just have a hard time believing Square would really make a combat system ala a Bayonetta for something that's supposed to be super mainstream and sell a bajillion copies. Character action is relatively niche after all for a reason. It doesn't sell to the level SE will expect of a mainline FF. But I'm hoping I'm wrong. I really really want to like this. Superficially it has all the things I want to see, I love DMC and it's ilk, etc. So fingers crossed. They're talking a big game... but that's their literal job. I just hope they can deliver on something that's fun to play and not just cool to watch happen.
We need another re-union with Maximilian Dood after this exclusive preview 🙌
