FINAL FANTASY X review, the first Final Fantasy game for the PlayStation 2! The adventures of Tidus, Yuna, Auron and the others has stayed in fans' hearts for decades since it came out. This review looks at its strong points, and where it falls flat.
Final Fantasy Xis a role-playing video game developed and published by Square as the tenth main entry in the Final Fantasy series. Originally released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, the game was re-released as Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2013, for PlayStation 4 in 2015, Microsoft Windows in 2016, and for Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in 2019. The game marks the Final Fantasy series transition from entirely pre-rendered backdrops to fully three-dimensional areas (though some areas were still pre-rendered), and is also the first in the series to feature voice acting. Final Fantasy X replaces the Active Time Battle (ATB) system with the "Conditional Turn-Based Battle" (CTB) system, and uses a new leveling system called the Sphere Grid.

My problem comes in when its' looked at *without* contextualizing it whatsoever for the sake of a review or a narrative of the game. It is/was *often* reviewed with that scene being used to point towards the voice acting *itself* being bad or cringey without contextualizing that it was deliberate. Again, I have no problem with the memes' or even if they just straight up hated the voice acting but it's was *often* pointed to to almost an exclusion of being an example of bad VA without context to fit that narrative.

Even the characters in-game basically acknowledge that the laugh is fake and awkward but they are doing it out of fun, basically Yuna pretends to smile when she feels sad and tells Tidus to do the same, only that they together scaled it to a fake laugh. Honestly I don't get why people criticize this game for the voice acting, specially on that scene. Even the sped up dialogue is not the voice actors fault, it's either from the translator that didn't provided them shorter lines to fit the small time frame or the audio mix guy that sped it up in such unclean manner. The only valid voice acting criticism I can think of is Seymour's voice I personally like it but it's pretty divisive, some fans like it and others don't.

I actually always understood the laugh scene as Tidus being deliberate. He was in a bad mood, and Yuna was trying to cheer him up with some advice, but because Tidus is a bit immature and didn't know what to do, he sort of did the letter but not the spirit. Similar to how when I was a kid and was told to take a deep breath while annoyed, I would do it really fast and exaggeratedly as a sort of "Okay, fine, I'll do what you said but this is stupid and I'm not taking it seriously". So he's laughing badly *on purpose* from an in-story perspective, and Yuna decides to try to keep cheering him up by joining in as well as demonstrate how silly he sounds. Later in the scene they both start actually laughing, if I recall, and it is very natural sounding.

  • @Isaac-gh5ku

Tidus was acting a bit immaturely but Yuna also put him on the spot. She'd had a lot of practice smiling in the face of sorrow, and while her advice isn't _bad_ it's a lot to ask from someone who's just learned his father has turned into a mass-murdering beast. So Tidus takes the piss out of Yuna by forcing out the most unnatural laugh. And doesn't stop even when asked. :D I think his voice actor does a great job too - you can hear the frustration and tension slowly relieve while he's screwing around with the stupid laugh. Yuna's advice worked! :)

This kind of battle system, turn-based with a bar for turn orders and different moves affecting it differently is also a staple of the Kiseki series of JRPGs, also known as the Legend of Heroes: Trails (or just Trails), in the west. Mayhaps check it out sometimes? The series really deserves more recognition here in the west.

I think the first one to do it was Grandia back in 2000. I really like the way it's implemented there as a slider bar with character icons that move along it, because a shortcoming of the system is that it is too predictable with static turn order. With character's ATB gauge moving along the same line and the fact that ANY hit will delay action depending on several other factors AND the battlefield is treated like an actual field where it takes time to close distance before and after an attack, it makes it much less formulaic and always has you asking yourself, "Will this hit hard enough to give another party member a turn before we get smacked again?" and praying that your distance estimation on the time slider is on point. The only downside was the movement was AI controlled which could get a bit wonky, but I still feel it's the best implementation of such a system...

He was such a manipulator that even Tidus buys into his "pretend you didn't see/ hear it" line, which is completely the opposite of how Tidus behaves the entire game. And even then, just because everyone, including the main cast is a fucking moron (something that is prevalent throughout the game) doesn't mean that Seymour is threatening or has any power. Especially since the people are already too brainwashed into their religion to criticize their leaders. But here's the thing, even if i agreed with what you say, she's still not threatening to any fucking degree. His plan is absolutely asinine (say what you will about Thanos, at least his insane plan was somewhat understandable especially when you consider his past), he literally doesn't do anything of note besides maybe destroy the Ronso which he still fails at, you effortlessly kick his ass in every single fight (which is the biggest issue), and his existence basically makes death meaningless since it's not nearly as bad as people think. In comparison, Sephiroth is also famous as being the greatest Soldier in the world. He's also done more to warrant him being a threat. He kills President Shinra, we see his strength when they show what he did to the Zolom, he fucks with the cast and gets away multiple times, kills a main character, takes over Cloud's mind to get the Black Materia, almost killed Tifa and Zack, destroyed Nibelheim, and i could go on and on. It is interesting going back to games you played as a kid when you're older. A lot of the themes you don't really connect with as a kid because you've experienced so little at that time suddenly mean a hell of a lot more to you later in life as those themes become more and more relatable. I legit shed a tear at the end of the game which really wasn't something I expected when I sat down to finally beat it for the first time.

@@hellogoodbyeandallinbetween I and many others dislike not only Tidus as a character but also the voice acting in the entire game. Remember, this is supposed to be a good looking, star athlete that the audience is supposed to connect with. How can you connect with with this person when they act and sound like a 4 year old? Most people I know that have played this game like the game but not most of the characters. The battle system is good, the sphere grid is meh but whatever. People don't like Tidus, Wakka, Rikku and Seymour as characters, and also take issue with their voice acting. This scene just accentuates their dislike of that voice acting regardless of the context. We have had to listen to this whining infant constantly moan on and on and on, and when we get here, we just want him to go away with no care for the underlying meaning of the scene. Just remember, Yuna told him to try laughing, he didn't start on his own accord, she told him to, and then even she says he should stop. The scene only gains its' meaning when SHE joins in.

I disagree that the characters dont really experience growth or change. Lulu: goes from being cold and standoffish and angry about wakka refusing to let go of chappu and not trusting tidus also because of chappu to the wise big sister/mentor role for both yuna and rikku as well as being the only one to make sure tidus actually knows whats going on most of the time. She also comes to terms with chappus death and gets with wakka. Rikku goes from being afraid of lightning and being the typical childish one of the group to taking charge and trying to find a way to prevent yunas sacrifice, as well as forgiving wakka for his racism. Amd if you follow the natural path of her sphere grid she ends up in lulus grid, mastering the magic she fears. Kimahri goes from a silent guardian to speajing to the group more. As well as standing up to the tribe he left in shame and taking down his bullies. Wakka you bring up in the video, but he learns that blindly following religion solves nothing and learns to accept chappus death as well as get over his hatred of al bhed Auron changes the least outside of our perception of him as we learn his motives. Hes theres to make tidus and yuna learn what they need to to succeed where he failed in life. But like wakka, in his youth he went from blindly following yevon to openly criticising the maesters in public and challenging yunalesca after braskas and jechts needless sacrifice. Yuna goes from a soft spoken girl following in her fathers footsteps to a young woman with an unbreakable conviction willing to allow herself to be ostracized by the nation shes fighting for and even still journeying to defeat sin after being made a public enemy. Tidus changes the most, going from an actual crybaby throwing selfish tantrums to someone that is willing to throw his life away for the sake of yuna and a whole world he doesnt even belong to.

Blitzball was super fun for what it is, I've made several files just to have different Blitzball teams and gotten several teams to lvl 90+ each lol, definitely one of the better Final Fantasy mini games. I feel like you glossed over the skill system a bit, you can pre plan your players skillset to work against the enemy team. If they have low hp, you can stack drain tackles on your blockers, if they have low endurance stats(so you know they'll try to pass rather than break through), use your defenders with high block. There's a lot more to it once you get into it. Plus the League rewards are SUPER good for progression, lots of very rare items.

They are living in a dark and gloomy world, the constant cloud of enviable death is permanently there. They are faking a laugh like how people fake a smile. Do it long enough and you might actually laugh/smile genuinely. It's SUPPOSED to be bad. It's SUPPOSED to sound awkward and stilted because it's two young people in a terrible situation just trying to cope, and coping by making fun of the trope of forcibly showing strength or joy past the point of sense in the face of intense bleakness and adversity (which pretty readily describes Spira as a whole, frankly) so no one worries about you. It's a clever deconstruction of an age-old character trait, that Yuna then flips the script on AGAIN right after by encouraging a more genuine alternative.

@@Edagui97 I think you're still removing a lot of the context from Roxas and Xion's friendship (and their friendship w/ Axel) by just reducing it down to "after work friends", as they're not exactly in a comparable and casual situation to what we would experience irl w/ our own after work friends, but....whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Out of all awkward KH dialoques, that is propably one of the best lines while having that KH-flair on it.

You know those songs you heard literally everywhere at one point but never could find the name of? My jaw dropped when I heard the title music.

This was the first Final Fantasy I ever played and knowing we got to see your view of Tidus story is something I live for.

You’ve really outdone yourself. Not only have you dissected and interpreted the story and characters masterfully, you injected more warmth and admiration into your analysis than in any other review besides FFs 1 and 6. You nailed it sir. Keep up the good work.

“Once you get to the end you just want to keep playing” - exactly why I’ve never “beaten” this game. I play up until the final save sphere, grind until I’m bored and then set the game aside until I’m ready to start it all over again…..which now that I say it seems incredibly ironic given FFX’s story and me literally not letting the dream of the Fayth end for myself

I've done this for not only both red dead, but I do so in gta, just time traveling to different periods in that particular character's life. In red dead, I hear a lot of people do this, but there are many instances in games I'm sure.

I personally think FF 10 has the best battle system in the whole series. I wish my other favorite FF8 could be remade with this style of combat

Small note of interpretation, but the Laughing scene in context is basically Tidus' way of saying "Screw you, universe!" in response to his terrible dad being Sin among some other bad-mood stuff going on at the time.
