It's cool to see a game so new already getting such a fast time. It's going to be exciting to watch their community trim this time over the years to come. Going to pop some popcorn and dig into this one.

It’s just cool to see all this cut content. I’m really looking forward to seeing yuffie and Vincent be actual party members with voices and interactions. IMHO, they did such a great job with this game and by this time next year Minerva willing, we will have the second one in our hands..

Never seen this dude before but he legit looks good in that Cloud outfit.

I don't know how people who don't know the original, or major fans of the original feel about the remake, but honestly I fall into the perfect demographic for this. I know the original story some and i recognize the characters, but I never got really into the original, so a story telling me some of the original while messing with it is really cool for me (also because meta stories are inherently my favorite kind.) I'm not upset that big things change because I'm invested in these depictions.

I first played through the original about a year before the remake came out. I don't know exactly how they plan to handle events from here on and I do think there are interesting places they can take it. I also really like when they delve deeper into the concepts of terrorism, environmentalism, and capitalism. However, it looks like the development of the characters is going in a very different direction, one that undermines the originals concepts which I found to be more impactful and meaningful than any other video game I have played. This didn't start with remake, it's been how final fantasy 7 has been represented ever since after it's release I actually think that, given the central themes of final fantasy 7, ripping it's characters away from their stories to tell a different one breaks the important aspects of their character arcs

I’ve beaten the original somewhere around 20 times- literally is my favorite game of all time. The way they expand on everything is just so good… and with everything that happens there’s still a sense of mystery because who knows how things in part 2 will be. It’s this perfect sweet spot of same and different.

Just got to watching this run now. Loved it! Wish you would stream more often Borin!

This game is so great. Literally first game I've put near 200 hours in. Greatest game of all time!

My love/hate relationship with Tifa has been ongoing for over 20 years (I’m Team Aerith all the way). But after playing her in Dissidia, I was hella excited to play her in this and she was my favorite to play in battle. I do miss her stacking slot limit break.

I'm very much the opposite, I didn't like Aeris much in the original, she was just a healbot for me. Tifa's gameplay is my favourite in the remake and she's just my favourite character in general.

He's always been blond. You can see it really clearly in his character art from the OG. I can't say for sure, but I think the reason they gave his model that sort of reddish-blond hair was to keep him from looking like Cloud.

Yeah, same, I looked up sprites and artwork from the original, and it's mostly blonde. Also, the specimen boss (Sample:H0512 in the OG) wasn't that pixely or "just a few pixels/polygons" in the OG, the model has quite a bit of detail. Those comments threw me off a bit. But it's natural to slightly misremember or get misdirected.

Awesome run, would've been even better with a live audience cheering in the background. Great to see a PB run at GDQ, solid work Borin.

I was so scared with the glitch in chapter 8 you'd skip Cloud's dance 😎.

Wow this game was excellent.... I kinda miss having everyone in the back being goofy. I hope in GDQ2021 we will be back where we always were.

I like how real time combat was blended with turn based combat. It works really well and provides a lot of depth to the gameplay. You can feel the love and passion poured into this.

3:05:03 That's definitely not a sonnet, but I realized that the syllable count corresponded to an English "haiku". Was gonna point this out, but I really don't like calling 5-7-5 verses that don't contain seasonal words "haiku", since they are technically senryu. But then I realized that maybe the doner actually called it a senryu, and since senryu is a rare word in English the reader may have misread it as "sonnet"? How deep does this rabbit hole go...

Did you coordinate the countdown to start the game at the very beginning exactly when the music hit a big downbeat? Or was that accidental? That was awesome

You know, I like how the combat is in the remake but I also appreciate the old school turn base combat system too. It gets to a point..especially when grinding, that I wish I could have the old style back. Like if I could toggle it in the options...

@DP enduro "New game is trash" "It's not a bad game but..." Make up your mind. Also they didn't ruin it. They enhanced it. They took a... maybe 30-40m section of the old game (Depending on how much you decided to grind) and stretched it into a full 100+ hour visual masterpiece with fun gameplay. The fact they're going the way they are with story just makes it that much better.

@@SwiftGale1 Midgar was more like 3-4 hours in casual runs. 1:40:00 to leave Midgar is WR pace because the any% is that plus 15 minutes of Kalm, then 5 minutes of warping abuse to the end.

​@DP enduro The new game is a REMAKE, not a REMASTER. It's a new game. If you want the original game and story, play the original. IMO a 1:1 reconstruction of the original would be boring, or at least incredibly uncreative and uninspired. I love the remake and what it does/changes with the story.

I might not like the new FF7Remake, but this run was great. Love to see it.

the hard difficulty of FF7R is all materia dependent, if you dont have the rigth materia, your pretty much screwed, in normal at least your good as long as you have access the items.

Why don't they stop time on load screens? I've seen plenty of games that do that because load times are so random

Most games with loading time removers have specific programs that read game data to keep track of when the game is or isn't loading. There's a couple ways - some games have an easy variable to check that has specific values on loading screens, some games actually have a hidden in-game-timer that counts up during gameplay but not during loading screens that you can just read. This is easy for PC games - you just have to use Cheat Engine and do some work to find your variable, then feed it into livesplit. Doing this on games on actual hardware are harder, as you usually don't have direct access to the data without modifying the console. You can use certain frame data from the capture software to only count certain frames, but that's only IF the loading screens have some kind of frame data that's different from the rest of the game - like a different GUI element that you can check for and not count those frames. Most speedrun communities don't like running on modified hardware, btw, because it's harder to get new people to run and it's hard to determine that the timer modification is the only modification. Any program that you'd be able to use to find the variable for loading screens could also be used to cheat by say making every random damage value roll in the top 10% of damage, and it's be hard to track and prove. So you're forced to look at frame data coming out of the PS4 Basically, the PS4 being new hardware and this being a relatively new game means that there's been fairly little time spent finding the frame data. That data can also be very hard to find - you might be able to identify a data set that would always identify when the loading screen is fully on-screen, but there's also periods of fade-in and fade-out that might not be removed. Ultimately, someone needs to create a type of script for livesplit to not count some frames based on frame data, submit it to the community for approval, and the community has to agree on using it for timing runs. Sometimes this splits the community, with two groups that each run on the IGT and RTA leaderboards.

Chris This is a marathon, so all times are real-time. GDQ doesn’t know every game good enough to use the timers for that game. If a run is close enough to be a WR, it needs to be retimed according to the rules for that specific game.

Because its an RTA or real time attack which includes load screens that plus they have no control over the timer its someone on the tech side of gdq not the player

In a marathon, you count the real time, probably in the leaderboard they remove the load time, although in Pc games is easy because of mod and programs, don't know about ps4 games

Kind of late, but there are a few reasons. One, this is a GDQ run, so they dont need to bother with that because the timer is more arbitrary. Two, this is played on a PS4. Usually, games that pause timer on loading screens are PC and they pause to keep an even playing field for good and bad pcs.

I just thought about this, I wonder why its called final fantasy 7 remake when its really only Midgar. It should have been called part 1, the beginning, or advent. Then, with the 2nd and 3rd games have some cool word for the middle and the end. I'm guessing we will get a trilogy(hopefully a trailer soon for part 2) which is basically all the content that was covered in the original 3 discs of og ff7 in the next 2 remake games. Pretty sure part 2 will be MASSIVE especially with what they could do with the overworld. I honestly think it would be best to wait until they release it all in one pack instead of paying 59.99 each. But then again, I don't have a ps4 and idk if this will be on ps5. Pretty sure it will though with the sequels being on ps5. Its all good though one day I'll experience this with all the ps4 exclusives I MISSED OUT ON(Since a long time ago I got an Xbox One to play Call of Duty with a friend).

Because in the original Japanese, you „swallow“ the u if it’s at the end of a word in a lot of cases. They’re simply going with the Japanese pronunciation.

I enjoyed the original FF7 but tried the remake on Normal and couldn’t get past the first boss, my attacks were literally doing scratch damage. Watching this speedrunner Borin, he’s doing so much more damage and I don’t understand why.

The game emphasizes needing to use Punisher + weaknesses on bosses vs. hack n slash. Too many people don't play this game correctly and end up just healing through bosses... it's actually a really easy game.

You're not really doing any damage without magic, or pressuring and staggering your opponent. Study your opponents patterns and respond. Pressure with attacks to build atb. Use magic when necessary and pay attention to whatever hints the game throws out. Just try a few times. Use the items available. They help.

Attacks in general are to build your atb so you can fire off skills. Certain skills have different effects in the stagger/ pressure gauge. Attacking normally generally builds pressure, which makes your atb skills more likely to stagger. Then certain skills will effect the damage percentage while an enemy is staggered. This is one big reason it's a must to get proficient with character switching.

Basic attacks aren't really for dealing damage, they're for charging your ATB. Damage comes from ATB abilities, like materia spells and Braver, and staggered enemies take even more damage. He explains at 4:00 how Cloud can give himself the Berserk buff to trade damage for defense, and how switching combat modes changes Cloud's attacks. Triangle abilities also help by feeding into ATB or stagger, depending on the character. Cloud has a unique counterattack ability as well that is necessary to stagger some enemies. And don't forget to upgrade your weapons and equip appropriate materia!

Well, good run, nicely laid out speedrun strat. Also nice to know, as a long time FF7 fan, that I made the right choice staying away from this ARPG trashfire wearing the skin of FF7. Lots of flashing lights and lip service, but no real FF7 game play to be found. All they had to do was release the same exact game with voice acting and better graphics, but no. Instead we get this generic focus-tested bs trying to "appeal to a wider audience" that doesn't include fans of the original.

I'm big fan of FF games but that remake it's a bad joke ,You only can go where game let you to go ,there is no freedom of exploration. It's a tiny fragment of actual FF7 .Huge disappointment. People advertising that game are not honest.

I mean there isn’t much open in the original in midgar either so what’s your point. And yeah dividing it up was controversial but I’m personally happy they did. I like the expanded story and characters. But liking it is subjective.

I've been going through original FF7 for my first time recently (cus I wanted to know what the differences would be, story-wise), and the Midgar section is pretty damn linear. If anything, that's one of the most 1-to-1 things between OG and Remake.

This game was a horrible remake. Copying FF13 for most things. Smh
