Final Fantasy PR - Ain't What She Used To Be - Casp

HEY STOP! This is a follow-up to an older video: • Final Fantasy - From H...
If you're watching this as a standalone, it will seem like half a video missing a lot of points... That's because it is :^).
Also I had to render it in 30 FPS because all of my original FF1 capture was in 30 and having only the remaster be in 60 is just weird.

The game can be easily modded to make your personal perfect FF1. Hard, easy, long, slow, however you like it. That said, it's very silly that the game didn't come with options for balance and presentation out of the box.

Another good video! Though it has always interested me on how they handled the visuals of this game. I won't lie, I prefer the PS1 and the GBA sprites, even if the ones used in this game stay FAR closer to the original. I do feel that this remaster is kind of in an awkward spot. It's probably the closest to being a one to one port of the original, with obvious changes such as proper stat scaling. But there really should have been at least a slider for how shops ect are handled. If people are going to jump on this version I assume its to get the most original feeling. Toning down the game seems to go against that, at that point just play the PS1 or GBA version. Though this version is the most assessable, and for FF3 case, probably the only way to get the pure experience (Since the DS version makes so many changes *A lot that I like* that it's hard to find the go back to the very original) That and just having a version with quality of life changes while still somewhat retaining the feeling is interesting.

Sprite work for the current remasters is fucking splendid. Been putting off picking them up though since I'm not really thrilled to be diving back into the pre-FFV rudimentary era of the franchise (yet again). Not to say it's without worth, but I've always been of the opinion that despite the respect they deserve, they were stepping stones for the series to find its footing -- capitalizing on superior mechanics, story telling and dungeon design as time went on.

They've been popping the oestrogen, chugging the soy, eating the onions. I need my mans to be defined by hard pixels. I agree, while barebones and not as fun as the rest of the game, there are three potential story hooks that could be expanded on. 1. The other surviving mermaid village, which if I remember right is the only thing to be referenced in the main game 2. The Phantom Train's mini arc of bringing back past bosses and terrorizing this one town. 3. The Knight's sword in spinoffs (the Braveheart) can only be found in the bonus dungeons, make a story reason, other class specific stuff and add the Lustrous Shield and you're set.

Never really understood this cult-like obsession with 'perfecting' FF1. Obviously it's a valuable artefact, à la Pac-Man or Super Mario Bros, but literally everything it has to offer in terms of mechanics and gameplay will always be superseded by FF5.

  • @Caspicum

    @Caspicum

based and ff5 pilled I definitely agree about the pursuit of perfection, none of these games will ever be perfect, but there is small tweaks to make them a better experience overall. I think Final Fantasy is about as 'perfected' as it can get at this point without fundamentally changing the core of it. I'd say slightly higher difficulty, but that's really in the hands of the player when they choose to make a party. Repeat playthroughs and challenge runs are do-able, especially if you're like a 4 red mage party or something. just useless characters.

@@TheSwordsman100 When its released that long after something not being made by the people who made the original and clearly not being canonically part of the story - its not canon. The original is a mostly blank slate type adventure ala dungeons and dragons type games like dragon quest and Ultima. Because of that design style you can fill in the blanks of the game with whatever you want. Square Enix has a history of tagging on subpar sequels because people will buy it if its connected to the thing they love. Not because its good. Square Enix has been unable to assess the quality of their games for a long time or perhaps they just don't care about anything but the profits. So don't tell me that this is canon when the guy who made the game in the first place (Hironobu Sakaguchi) hated sequels to the point where he specifically designed each of his games to be a fully complete and contained experience. People talk about dissidia's additions because they like those additions making it more complex and filled out perhaps so they have more to sink their teeth into. But that doesn't mean its officially canon. It doesn't matter what square enix says. Furthermore, the dissidia series is a fighting game series that tries to find a reason to bring these separate worlds together so they can fight. Stories in fighting games (especially crossover ones) are usually pretty bad and there mostly to serve the gameplay rather than the story. Many people love these games and even these stories not because they are good and make sense (they don't) but because it allows them to fulfill their fantasy of bringing together characters they love from different worlds and universes and pitting them against each other or imagining how they would react or relate to each other.

Because of the vertical orientation and proportions of Amano's/Shibuya's concept art, a lot of the original art is verticaly oriented, but some were re-done by the visual artists to capitalise on the wider battle scene space, particularly in later iterations (particularly in FF3 with the Dark Cloud boss). FFPR tries to capture the concept art as closely as possible like the NES version did, so its less generic anime, more illustratively Amano/Shibuya. If you compare it to the concept art you can see this change. I like both but as a fan of Amano's shit and growing a soft hatred for overly-safe anime designs, I prefer FFPR mostly. Depends on the individual design tbh. There's a link in my OG final fantasy video to an interview with Kazuko Shibuya who goes over this stuff loosely, it's an interesting read, would recommend. edit: haha holy god damn i just re-read this and it was clear that i was distracted while typing, this is word salad. i'm sorry.

@@Caspicum Your response is coherent and informative to me, so no reason to apologize. Comparing the PR sprites to the PS1/GBA sprites, I don't see a discernible "anime" aesthetic that differentiates the two (regardless of the PR being based on the NES sprites or Amano art). But the PS1/GBA sprites use the space of the battle screen more effectively to create the impression of a gigantic, scary boss creature that poses a serious challenge, so I think just in terms of composition alone the PS1/GBA sprites are much better. Insert obligatory disclaimer about there being no wrong opinions, etc., here.

@@PaulvonOberstein nah you're right, they definitely fit the space better and in terms of raw pixel art, I think they're better. There's something about Amano's art, even translated to these weird, often cramped NES sprites that I love though. THat's not even nostalgia, I grew up with the PS1 versions, so idk what it is. It's either contrarianism or a weird appreciation for comparatively uglier things.

While the remasters look nice, absolutely cannot say this looks better than the PSP version. There are a lot of game elements that look extremely jarring next to the sprites most glaring being the menus and fonts. Cobbling art styles together makes for a hideous mess and lacks any cohesion there once was. As far as beating the game you can beat it with literally ANY configuration of the party as you want, and that was a selling point for the game. It's funny you mention cheese...4 white mages or 4 red mages are the MOST cheese of any configuration. That 20 step buffer while nice....average for games at that time is around 30-40 steps including the NES version of FF1. So they've technically increased the encounter rate. These for sure have some weird additions/changes, since that mini map is a rip from FF4 DS as it too added a mini map you could see, but that mini map system wasn't great thanks to what it was used for...no more rushing dungeons you have to find every pixel of it to get items some of which were unique and only gained through that.

idk man i still think the PSP version looks like a shitty, modern mobile game. That real soft, liberal use of gradient shapes, there's no definition. I honestly think it's my least favourite style, as even the ones that came before it had era-appropriate appearances and consistency.

My biggest disdain for the entire remaster is the ugly as hell font choice. Thankfully you can mod the game to give a more pixely font which works beautifully.

I'm sorry but to be a contrarian again but I don't like this version's graphics. Also unlike you I desperately want a remake of FF1 in the same vein of FF3's that heavily ties itself to the fleshing out of FF1 story and character details from Dissida instead of the....thing that is Stranger of Paradise.

PR is a lazy effort, a cashgrab and a inferior version than Its predecessors from 10+ years. In my opinion they already "got the game right" in the GBA and PSP versions, and they should have just ported the PSP version with enhancements like random encounters be optional and better resolution.

idk i think the gba and PSP versions are for number-go-up neighbour cattle who don't like to think too hard about anything and just like to mash X so that number go up. all the optional content is "i clapped when I saw the thing I recognised". It defo could've been cheaper and I question re-releasing FF1 (again) when the PS1 version already exists, but disabling random encounters isn't a positive change. It's weird that you'd want to relegate a fundamental part of the challenge to an option. Yeah random encounters can be annoying, but without the constant threat of death to a random mob because your resources have expired trivializes the entire experience. You've got a glorified flash game boss rush at that point. Why not make the entire game a linear corridor with one room connecting bosses? Get an Elite Four situation going on. I'm not shitting on you, I appreciate the comment, but I have a lot of thoughts about making changes to older games and skipping content.
