@@TimaeusShinryu The story how they got him is also pretty neat. At the beginning of the project, after they made a vertical slice of what game they wanted FF16 to be and got it greenlit by Square Enix, YoshiP (the director and producer of FF14 and producer of FF16) and Hiroshi Takai (director of FF16) were talking about who to cast as a combat director for FF16. Do they have anyone inside Square to help them out with the action combat they wanted to do? Sadly they discovered they had nobody in the company with such experience. But Takai knew about Ryota Suzuki, who just finished his work DMC5 and was looking for a project to join and he told YoshiP 'hire this guy as the combat director, there is literally nobody better equipped for the job'. Next day YoshiP jumped on a plane to Osaka to meet Suzuki and told him 'I want you to work as a combat director on FF16, this is how much I can pay you, do you want the job?' and Suzuki agreed without any need of convincing. :P

Every Final Fantasy game is stand alone unless it's stated as a sequel, so it's well worth looking into. Essentially, it an anthology of Fantasy RPGs using common themes and elements throughout the franchise, such Magic Crystals, spells, and powerful summons, brave young heroes and villains grasping for Godhood.

and each game is unique enough to not feel like a copy. some are better than others yea but most of them are good or great. 15 an example has a ok story. nothing special really. kingdom take back. combat is fun and once mastered can let you take on enemies way past your level. the main problem outside of forcing people to watch the movie to understand whats going on is the extreme lack of stuff to do in the world. its mostly barren and the only 2 places that are isolated have almost nothing in them for quests and exploration. well meaningful exploration. but something like 10 had a great story good characters and a well made combat system. origins had good combat but the lack of open world and just mission jumper takes away from the world building. glad they did it the way they did in 16. or at least from what we have seen. hope the huge open areas have a lot of things to do and they dont repeat 15's mistake.

When Clive is transforming he’s manifesting different aspects of the “Ikons” which are incredibly powerful monsters and entities which have pretty much always been in the series in some form or another. Sometimes they’re referred to as “summons” or “guardian forces” or “espers” in previous games. They’re not always important to the plot, sometimes they’re just hugely powerful attacks with lavish animations, where you call the creature and it does a big attack. And sometimes they’re plot critical characters themselves. Some notable ones in the trailer are Titan’s fists, Ifrit’s fiery claws, Shiva’s icy mantle, Bahamut the Dragon King’s wings, Ramuh the Thunder God’s staff, and Odin’s sword. There are plenty more, it looks like Ikon abilities form the large basis of Clive’s moveset. Controlling so many at once would make him a very odd, standout character in the history of the series. He must be pretty godlike by the end of the game.

They’re very familiar to series veterans, something that we all look forward to seeing new iterations of as the series goes on, “what’s Ifrit going to look like this time around?” That kinda thing. They also all traditionally have super attacks that they use when they’re summoned, Ifrit has Hellfire, Odin has Zantetsuken, Bahamut has Giga Flare, etc. I’m pretty sure we saw at least a couple of them in this gameplay showcase, this is absolutely massive fanservice for longtime fans.

Square gets alot of hate and I admit I dislike some of their games, but I give them alot of goodwill simply for their ability to progressively get better and better at easing newcomers into FF without losing the complexity us oldtime fans love. Though they do sometimes get into trouble for being too ambitious and creative for what they can realistically achieve, but I kinda like that when they have problems it's usually because they were being too imaginative for the budget lol

All of the Final Fantasy games are self contained. Some of them have some easter eggs that relate to each other, and they are tied together by common themes (like the presence of Chocobos - the giant birds that the hero was riding around on, which have been in every FF game), and some enemies show up in all of them (not the same individuals, but for example most Final Fantasy games have their own version of Bahamut, for example, and he'll always be a very powerful boss and/or summon that the player can use). But every single one of the mainline titles has their own setting, their own characters and their own narrative that can absolutely be played in isolation. The only exception is the FF7 remake, which isn't actually a remake at all; it's a sequal to the original FF7, disguised as a remake to throw the audience a curve ball.

When Bethany was talking about being blown away by so many facets of the game for different players to enjoy, it brings to mind a particular bit of context. Naoki Yoshida-the overall producer and game director for Final Fantasy XVI-is also the producer and creative director for Final Fantasy XIV Online. While that may seem simple, let me explain. Final Fantasy XIV Online is an MMORPG, and that genre of game has always been known for being a smorgasbord of different gameplay styles that appeals to as wide an audience as possible. Whether it's questing, Player-versus-Player, massive scale raids against dungeons and bosses, minigames, puzzles, collections, lore-hunting, the works. On a gameplay standpoint, this also means that the MMORPG will have to cater and accommodate players of different skill levels in order to retain them. If a game is too hard, you'll alienate the casual players. If a game is too easy all across the board, you'll alienate the hardcore players who look for a challenge. In lieu of balancing anything and everything, the other best option to give different player types is choice, and different avenues of play. In this regard, it seems Yoshida-san and his team have taken those learnings from Final Fantasy XIV Online and implemented them into Final Fantasy XVI. The easiest example here are the Timely accessories. Final Fantasy has always been known to be a turn-based kind of game. Players love it for its strategy element where every turn, your moves matter. However, the big hook of that kind of gameplay is that you're able to take your time with it, and not have to worry about dodging, attacking with complex combos, or paying attention to so many things happening all at once in real time. With Final Fantasy XVI, they've broken tradition and made the game fully real-time action combat in order to adapt to the landscape of the video game market and the kind of players of the current time. So, while the game is catering to players who are more into action games, the Timely accessories are also a potential hook for older players who are more used to the slower-paced turn-based action of earlier Final Fantasy titles. They hook in new potential fans, while potentially not alienating long-time hardcore fans of the series. Other examples include adding lore-masters in the game, for those players who may be interested in deep-diving and immersing themselves into the game's narrative and storytelling. You have the Arcade mode for competitive players who may want to flex their skills on the global online leaderboards, on top of a whole slew of other things. It's a single-player RPG, but the fundamentals that make up the underlying philosophy and gameplay loop appears to be for an MMORPG-which is a good approach to take if one wants to make a game that's timeless and for as wide an audience as possible

Oof, couldn't help myself, book incoming. Here we go. As a fun fact, the Pixel Remasters are on console now, so you can play... Almost every mainline Final Fantasy game on a single console now. Every mainline from 1 to 10, 10-2, 12, 14, 15, soon 16. There is Final Bar Line if you're wanting a game focusing on music, the 7 Remakes and the Crisis Core prequel, the list goes on. Granted none of them will have the crazy visual flair that 16 boasts, but you can now genuinely get into this crazy franchise easier than ever. What's more, many of the older games have built-in features that streamline them, such as EXP or AP multipliers that will enable you to experience the games with ease and in relatively short time compared to many modern games. While every mainline Final Fantasy is its own story, there are recurring elements between the games that link them together as something of a combined universe. Final Fantasy 14 and Stranger Of Paradise go very far out of their way to illustrate the idea that the games are all linked even if the stories never directly meet with each other. I believe you would have an amazing time with this franchise, particularly with 4, 6, 9, 10, and easily 16. The series is predominantly RPG, turn-based combat with managing menus and teams of characters. If you are more interested in action and less turn-based, then it might be for the best to go into 16. I can sing the franchise's glory from the hilltops until my lungs burst, but if turn-based combat is slow or boring to you, then the older Final Fantasy games may not interest you as much. In which case, perhaps a summary video would do better. I'll keep an eye out for links/channels on that front. With all that being said... I now deviate to a second thing unrelated to Final Fantasy. I am still a part of prayer circles around the world hoping someday that you'll play Yakuza Zero. I guarantee the story from that game will entertain and move you to feel all the feelings, from badass highs to painful lows and everything in between. Please. Pretty please.

To be fair, none of the final fantasy numbered games are connected. If they are, they share aa number. So Final Fantasy 7 dirge of cerberus is connected to FF7, but FF8 is set in an entirely different world. Final Fantasy was turn based up until about 12 where they started to slowly get away from it. 12 was turn based but you could move during battle and even dodge, 13 even more so, and by 15 it was basically going all in on the action. FF7 remake (which was originally completely turn based) became a combination of both real time with some turn based elements. FYI, most FF games will allow you to control your companions to some degree if not completely. This will be the first where AI takes full control of the companion.

I recommend playing FF7 remake on the channel. It's a short game compared to most other FF7 titles and it is more action based with some turn based elements, but is easy enough to learn. While the remake makes commentary on the original FF7 and the difficulties of creating a remakes with the a very judgemental fanbase (all metaphors in the game I assure you) you can play it without having played the original or other titles. It's about a 30-40 hour game if you take time to actually do side missions.

Final Fantasy games have always been stand-alone yes, so you can pick up any of them and have a full experience. To answer some of your questions: 1. Yes, old FF games started off as turn-based. But if you go by the number of years it's been since then, the game has been real-time longer than it's been turn-based. But you'll still find "purists" who hate change and are still going around hating on this game simply because it's real-time. 2. You said the combat reminded you of Devil May Cry, that's not strange considering that Ryota Suzuki, the combat designer for DMC 5, worked on this game. I have full trust in Yoshi P and CBU 3 (the development division within Square Enix that made this game); YoshiP previously helmed the successful rebuild of FF14 which is still a stellar MMO that's going strong even now, and he's headed the development of both 14 and 16 at the same time, and I have full trust that they will knock it out of the park with this game.

It’s got a very action-focused combat style where you have control over a three person party, and can switch which character you control on the fly or just issue commands for them to do while you control your favorite. It’s got a wide range of difficulty settings to accommodate even the most casual gamer. And the story is absolutely fantastic, it’s incredibly well acted, and features one of the most beloved cast of characters in the series. All set in a really interesting, dystopian, low-cyberpunk world. Its major themes are environmental conservation, anti-capitalism, and overcoming mental trauma.

Final Fantasy XVI looks incredible. And my excitement prior was just the fact it's from Creative Business Unit 3. The internal development team from Square Enix responsible for Final Fantasy's 11 and 14. And 14 is my personal favorite of the entire series. And so that dev team, with a dark fantasy setting, DMC style action combat, is something that clicks for me so well. And every new FF is it's own game. Think of it as a sort of anthology series. Scant few elements carry over, aside from Moogles, Chocobos and the Summons. Even then, I don't think the Summons have been this well integrated into the story since FFX. So yeah, no need to worry about needing to play the previous 15 mainline installments, I personally recommend you do because they are all good games in their own right, but in regards to story, you can just play FFXVI on it's own. As said in the State of Play, you play as Clive Rosfield. Whom is the Dominant of the Eikon (Summon) Ifrit. Meaning he can transform into Ifrit and harness it's power for normal combat. There's also Jill Warwick, Dominant of Shiva. Joshua Rosfield, Dominant of Phoenix. Benedikta Herman, Dominant of Garuda. Hugo Kupka, Dominant of Titan. Cidolfus Telamon, Dominant of Ramuh. Barnabas, Dominant of Odin. And Dion Lesage, Dominant of Bahamut. Several of these characters, Hugo, Barnabas, Dion and Benedikta to be specific, all seem to be against Clive along his journey and fight him as their normal selves, but also engage in battles in Eikon form. While characters like Cidolfus and Jill are companions. Joshua seems to die early on in the story to establish Clive's goal of revenge in the story. Outside of the Dominants and Eikons, there's more layers there and elsewhere in this story and realm of Valisthea. And I got all this from the trailers and the character bios on the official website.

I'm really excited for this. If there's one game that will make me buy a PS5 even if it ever comes to PC, it's this. I have to agree with some old Final Fantasy fans, though, that they've been left out. The game tries to cater to many kinds of players but definitely not to those who loved the classic turn-based Final Fantasy. I hope Final Fantasy still returns to the turn-based format (and of course tries to improve it) someday, even if only temporarily. I still love the turn-based format to this day. Also, I hope we can turn off the damage numbers and most of the UI. I've been spoiled by the minimalistic UI of FromSoft games and Ghost of Tsushima.

WHile I'm excited for the game, I still find weird that you only have a sword. They said at the beginning of the video that it's the first full fledged Action RPG in the serie and yet you only get 1 weapon type ? Seems pretty limited choice for players. Stranger of Paradise had dozen of weapon types plus crazy magic. FF14 and FF15 also had lots of different weapon types. But it's just a minor complaint, I'm sure the game will still be a great experience.

Final Fantasy 16 is a lot like Devil May Cry interns of gameplay. Clive is like Dante plus he uses moves similar to Nero and Vergil.

I will say every ff game is standalone so you can jump into any and not have it connected unless it’s stated as a sequel so for example if you play ff13 you have ff13 2 and ff13 lighting returns but that’s not connected to 12 or 11 or 10 or 15 etc they all standalone

I think choice for difficulties in RPGs is great but I was always iffy on story modes. Chief problem is engagement, for a 20-90 hour game, if every fight requires 0 thought, it starts to feel like a chore. I feel like that's the main problem with long RPGs like this where if the gameplay loop is boring it kills the game even though the focus tends to be the plot. When you have story mode in most RPGs it kills that loop.

@@sonicboom586 Yeah, it just sucks to have the temptation to turn it on. Im a masochist (when it comes to games), so I prefer games that are really difficult with no option to turn down the heat. 🔥🥵🔥 It makes beating the game more rewarding. But I'm not mad about it because not everyone likes being tortured like me. I'm *definitely* not turning it on.

@@sonicboom586 I think it's a problem if that's your first RPG and you don't try because you lack confidence or are lazy and you quite the game, deciding it's boring. More worried about people depriving themselves of an experience because they gimped themselves in the start menu.

You should realize that it will have a sad end like almost every game of the series and I’m almost assured that the mc love interest will die🌚 So don’t recommend playing the game before all dlcs release - there might be an alternative happy end and, as far as there are no sequels of the series games, every end is canonical🤣🤣🤣
