Filson vs. Tough Duck Work Vests

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

With the advantage of having such savvy viewers, often I get inspired by you to make videos. This is a perfect example of that. A commenter suspected that Filson CCF was merely rebranded Tough Duck at twice the price! I have to admit that it certainly seemed to be the case, but to accurately make this claim I really needed to buy both to compare. Is the Filson CCF vest worth twice what the Tough Duck quilted vest costs?

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

We used to do legal work for Tough Duck in Manitoba - they are indeed whitelabelling for Filson (and a few others). The modifications you found were likely suggested by Filson, and doesn't make a huge impact to the mfg process (hence why they are minor size and material changes).

I would love to see you review the Patagonia work wear in comparison. I have a quite a few pieces and have been very happy with them. The only knock is I have a short inseam and find their pants too long. Overall the Ranch Jacket and Vest I have had for two years, as well as the double knee pants; all perform very well in a variety of conditions. I just received the bibs for Christmas and wore them at 25F reinforcing a deck. I found them warm soft and very durable so far. The main reason for the bibs is for working in below freezing temps especially as the months will get closer to zero. I have been noticing recently a few local farmers who have also been sporting Patagonia work clothes. One I happened to ask about and they said they want to support the hemp production but also liked the way the fabric performed.

I’ve been wearing Filson since mid 90’s. As you mention some of there stuff is hit or miss and their strength is their wool products. I purchased two flannel shirts that were made in India and they were junk. After one wash they turn into a wrinkled mess. I just purchased a new with tags Maine Guide Sweater made approximately 2008 that is one of their classic garments. Excellent channel 👍🇺🇸

You are so correct about the zipper for the American consumer as well as Form Over Function. Filson has chosen a new trajectory as a company a few years back....great product but a status brand more than ever. One vid I would like to see is How to Chose a Shoe Cobbler (questions to ask, leather used or sourced, technique used for resoling, etc). This profession is still around but before i entrust my Allen Edmonds or Redwings, they better have the skill level these shoes demand. I know I can send them to the company, but sure is good to find a skilled person.

As if often the case with many luxury products, it’s 80% name over substantial quality differences. I found this recently with a pilots watch I purchased made by the British company Timefactors and made for them in Germany with case and bracelet made by the same company that makes the cases and bracelets for Sinn. For around $600 ( though I purchased mine gently used for $350) you get a 316 Steel case and bracelet beautifully machined, a 1.5mm thick soft iron dial which helps go towards ( along with soft iron inner case back and the usual anti magnetic features on the top grade ETA auto movement ) an 80,0000A/m antimagnetic protection level. You also get a screw into the case crown tube as opposed to the regular and much cheaper to manufacture press in, screw down crown adds to the 100m water resistance rating. Each link on the bracelet is screw in tube, not spring fit which again adds to the quality. 2.5mm thick sapphire crystal with anti reflective coating on the inside and mounted in a way that if under negative pressure it will not pop out. Add in a high quality two watch hard leather travel case and additional high quality NATO and it’s one heck of a package. I used to own a Rolex Milgauss with similar specification and to be honest as much as I love Rolex I simply cannot see where the extra $7000 goes apart from a different steel and in house movement. I’m not knocking Rolex, I love the brand but how can this British watch hand made in Germany of the finest materials only cost around $600 when Rolex charge around $7000 more. It has to be name and maintaining dealerships ( the Speedbird is direct sale from the maker) I like Filson stuff but man is it expensive and this other brand shows how much that little label will cost to have!

Nice review, a reason I subscribe - you are a welcome wealth of info. I've commented before about Filson and my admiration for their Mackinaw Wools and Tin Cloth. I own a LOT of their products, mostly their wools and Tin Cloth (though I have boots too) and have been dealing with them for 20-30 years. I recently ordered a couple more vests - wool and tin cloth. I waited for a week and went on line to check on the order - I actually paid for 2 day shipping. I said, I am checking on an order, I paid for 2 day shipping and it's been a week. The online person was very rude and sarcastic and said it may be another week - what do you want me to do? I simply said, a refund... and it was issued. Normally I would say not a big deal. However one of the reasons I've stayed loyal to Filson over the many years was their outstanding customer service. I've had no issue with the quality of Filson products - we own a horse farm (on a river) and I can be tough on garments. I sent an email to Filson - telling them of my loyalty to their brand and of my recent disappointing experience. I told them I did not want anything as compensation, but rather just wanted them to know the service was uncommon and unacceptable for a brand steeped in tradition of exceptional customer service. I did not get a response - I sent another email...still no response. Am I done with Filson? I'm not sure, but my loyalty to their brand has changed. I would LOVE to find other brands of quality for around the farm, trails around our property. I appreciate quality and style is important...got to look good for my horses (and a wife that still looks as good as she did 30 years ago).

Oh my main zipper on the outside has it the opposite way than the most of my other jackets which have zipper(zip up) on the left.

I had a CC Filson work vest for a few months. I even went as far to wax it. But it never fit well. Their sizing is really hard for me to nail. I am 6'3" and 208 pounds and I started with an XL. Oh man, it was ridiculously large and boxy. Then I sized down to a Large. Almost the same and very loose. I think if I wouldn't have given up on it, perhaps a Medium would have worked. Nonetheless, take that into consideration if buying one of their vests. Build quality was great. No issues there. --Michael

It’s not unheard of for a manufacturer to make a slight variant for another company. Even a company as high end as alden, still makes boot variants for companies like Jcrew, using their basic design, with a few modifications that don’t impact the production line.

That's a funny conclusion. I think partly because I'm ambidextrous, but maybe also because I've had multiple garments with the zipper on the left, it's something I'm used to. My jackets from Barbour, Uniqlo, Ted Baker all have zippers on the left. I think a lot of stuff made in/for Korea - I lived there for 7 years - also comes with the zippers that way, so another reason I'm used to it.

Do you know if tough duck has a warranty for their products, or does repairs? If not, that might be one more point for filson, since filson will repair damaged garments

Not sure about the warranty or repairs but I see that vest for around 60-70$ here in Canada and that’s in Canadian dollars which equals to around $50 Usa. Dollars if you got 2-3 years I think it pays for itself

I have quite a few Filson products. Some of them, they don't even make any more. Their quality is NOT the same as before. I compared my 20 year old jac-shirt with a new one, even the salesperson acknowledged it. Reminds me of what happened to Eddie Bauer.

oh yagelnizzle yeah - I just commented. I’ve been a loyal Filson customer for 20-30 years (prob longer). I’ve got tons of Filson Tin Cloth and Mackinaw Wool items. We own a horse farm. I’m disappointed with the direction Filson has gone in the past few years and customer service is not what it was. I’m looking for a replacement go to brand. I have given Filson as gifts for years. I appreciate the reply.

They do still make similar made in USA cruiser vests. Sometimes they go on sale if they don't sell out your size or you could go on Ebay. But if your surveyor vest is unique, yeah it would be interesting to find out if they could; anything could be made for a price!:) Or they are always bringing back old designs, of course selling them at ridiculous prices though.
