"Dune is set in the distant future in a feudal interstellar society in which various noble houses control planetary fiefs. It tells the story of young Paul Atreides, whose family accepts the stewardship of the planet Arrakis. While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated desert wasteland, it is the only source of melange, or "spice", a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. Melange is also necessary for space navigation, which requires a kind of multidimensional awareness and foresight that only the drug provides. As melange can only be produced on Arrakis, control of the planet is a coveted and dangerous undertaking. The story explores the multilayered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the factions of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its spice."
"Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed and co-produced by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. It is the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. Set in the distant future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem."

    The now 2 movies don't really portray how powerful Paul is and how is mind works. Obviously in a book we can be in his head. In a movie that's harder. But the way the book shows how Paul can notice and understand every single thing happening around him isn't done to the level that I was hoping for. In his fight with Feyd it just seems like a battle of skill. It doesn't begin to explain how Paul actually won that fight. I simply never truly felt the same sense of Paul being able to essentially read minds.

    @@SK4M_Freal*Exactly!* I'm so frustrated with how little was actually a part of the movies. The most frustrating part of all is that DV's "Dune" was 55 minutes *longer* than the Sy-Fy channel's Dune adaptation. He had *more* screen time than anyone else had to devote to this story, and yet he covered *less* than Lynch or the Sy-Fy channel. Instead, he wastes so much screen time lingering in different scenery and close-ups of people's faces. It's insane how much waste there is.

    The Herald of the Change ceremony is such a great addition by Villeneuve. It’s brilliant from a world building stand point and doesn’t beat audiences over the head with exposition. To make take such a complex universe like “Dune” make it understandable to a mainstream audience without dumbing it down is insanely difficult, and Villeneuve pulled it off. Absolutely genius.

  • @NovusIgnis

    @NovusIgnis

    He really didn't. He gave a watered down version of Dune, not the real Dune. The Spacing Guild is integral to the Dune universe, but they're mentioned *maybe* once, and never seen as a real presence. Even missing *just* that changes the entire story, let alone the other things left out and ignored. So clearly audiences *don't* understand Dune because they weren't given Dune, more like "Pile" instead of Dune.

    @@NovusIgnis I don’t remember the Spacing Guild doing much in the original book, though. We get maybe two or three scenes with representatives and that’s it. We’re definitely going to be much more important in the “Dune: Messiah” movie with Edric.

  • @NovusIgnis

    @NovusIgnis

    2 ай бұрын

    @@benderthepirate They didnt do a lot as "people", but they mattered a lot as a "presence". The notion that they wouldn't be unable to use satellites in the movie to detect the Fremen in the southern regions, and thus get an accurate count on how numerous they are, is ridiculous. In the book this is explained by the fact that that the Fremen collect their own spice and use it to bribe the Spacing Guild to prevent that monitoring. Furthermore, there's no logical reason in the movie for the Great Houses, who I recall are in orbit, to not simply start attacking from space. In the book, this is again explained by Paul checkmating the entire Imperium with the threat of destroying all spice *ever.* They aren't characters, but rather an oppressive force that makes it clear how powerful they are when you consider that they don't even have a presence as characters. The Emperor, the Bene Gesserit, the Mentat order, etc etc everyone has a presence as characters moving actively except the Spacing Guild. They only show up as characters at the end, and even that is just to be thoroughly beaten by Paul into doing what he wants. They're a pretty significant player.

    @@NovusIgnis I agree that this felt like a watered down version of dune. Kynes and Duncan Idaho's characters seemed pretty butchered for me as well. I think it would have been better if they adapted Dune as a Game of Thrones type series rather than a movie. Dune has so much internal monologue in the books which is why I think its been so hard to adapt it. Although the visuals and special effects in the movie is great.

Though not specifically mentioned in the book it's not outside the realms of possibility and I do think Denis Villeneuve leans towards such an idea also.

    The majority of modern-day Spain was inhabited by Celts prior to Roman occupation. Also, bullfighting was deeply rooted in Greco-Roman culture, and was prolific all around the Mediterranean at one point in time--Spain just held onto the tradition a good while longer than everybody else. I'm not trying to nit-pick, I'm just saying the idea of bullfighting Celts isn't really that big of a stretch.

    Bull fighting is Spanish while Atreus is Greek so why isn't Celtic heritage and bagpipes also not acceptable in the mix?
