Film Theory: How To FREEZE Elsa! (Disney Frozen 2)

Frozen 2 was one of the highest grossing movies of 2019 and, like most of the world, I saw it. Since then one scene has been getting my Theorist brain in a tizzy. We see Elsa freeze, which came as a total surprise to me! The previous movie tells us that the cold never bothered her and yet, here we are. So my question is, HOW do you freeze the ice queen herself?

    Matpat, there is a simpler explanation: *If love thaws, then hate freezes.* What she saw down there was literally an act of true hate and it froze her.

    I read the scene like this: the cave wasn’t freezing her directly. It was draining her magic. Without magic, she isn’t impervious to the temperature anymore. It also more accurately explains why Olaf got dusted. Not because she died, but because her last bit of magic was just barely keeping her alive. Even for this movie, bringing someone back from the dead is a bit of a stretch.

    So, this is more easily explained by lore. Elsa's freezing power fully unlocked because of the shock of betrayal by her ancestors, and she froze herself, i.e. overwhelmed her own body with her power. As for her unfreezing, something about curses, ley lines, and shock enabling her to re-establish control.

    in a way, the impact was probably her seeing this super disturbing truth about her past and people that "shook" her emotionally, and that's what supercooled her. in the first movie, it's intense negative emotions that offset her ice powers. so in response, she tries to stay as cool and collected and emotionless as possible. and now, although she is much happier and is able to express herself and be more emotionally open and is able to self regulate her emotions better, seeing the ambush on her people is what messes her up and she breaks (in this case, freezes). idk lol

    About the location thing, there might be some relevant folklore in Arendal irl that explains why they chose that location, but as a Norwegian it always struck me as weird. Having lived in Bergen for 4 months now and having watched the movies just a week ago, I can't vouch for the inspiration from Bergen. I also find it weird with Arendal when it comes to geography, since Arendal is one of the most southern places in all of Norway, and we mostly think of it as a place with sun and warm summers. However, watching the movie with 2 friends, we all thought that the climate looked more like northern norway, where winters are usually around -30 celius and iirc -25 fahrenheit. Geographically, the fjord around Arendelle looks a lot like Sognefjorden or Geiranger, which is considered to be in western norway, but is also a fair bit more north, around 300km or 190 miles to Sognefjorden and 430km or 250 miles to Geiranger. So all in all they are kind of all over the place. Arendal would at least never get the kind of snow you see in the movie, and the ice haulers in frozen 2 and the reindeer is also only really in the northernmost bit of Norway, where Norwegians and Sami become more blended together. Lastly, the glacier island from Frozen 2 might be inspired by Svalbard, a large Norwegian island far north of Norway, however, they would've had to change the distance as they often do, since it is pretty far away.

    Brunii (the cute fire lizard) is actually a SALAMANDER. Yes they are semi-aquatic creatures but in folklore they were thought to be impervious to fire and some were even thought to cause or control fire, so Brunii being a fire elemental in this movie is accurate.

  • @v.v365

    @v.v365

    4 жыл бұрын

    Also Elsa’s ice magic seemingly has ties to all the other elements. Elsa can cause massive snow storms, so she has some control over wind. Elsa’s ice magic can also manipulate water, so she can control that element. Elsa’s ice can stop the fire elemental, so she can feasibly control fire in a manner of speaking. And though Elsa never directly interacts with the Rock Giants, from science we know that water can seap into the cracks of rocks, freeze, and break said rocks apart. It’s why we salt the roads in the winter, it’s why potholes become such big problems, and it’s why an argument can be made that Elsa can control the earth elementals in some way.

    it’s the irony of her being frozen solid. “go too far and you’ll drown” she went too far past the light and into the darkness and she drowned in her own power. it became a curse bc she went too far. it’s not a matter of temperature, it’s the magic. it even says the line “go too far and you’ll drown” right before she jumps, indicating that she’s *going too far*. she’s so caught up in the voice (which is her mother by the way) that not only does she go too far, she forgets about the other cast. super-cooling is cool tho.

    logically and from a movie standpoint, its pretty clear that elsa lost control of her power and it completely overwhelmed her. but thats not what the theory was about. it is specifically looking at the temperatures that didnt bother her, and then scientifically what could have caused her to freeze after it was established that finding the cave's temperature was not an option

  • @lizzie4914

    @lizzie4914

    Ciaran Gale yeah but he completely ignores that it’s not about temperatures. he ignores the entire point of her being frozen which was magic, not science. he says the reason he makes this theory is to see why elsa freezes when it’s very clear that she freezes bc of magic and her “going too far”

  • @naominoone4334

    @naominoone4334

    Ciaran Gale this movie is also a kids movie purely built on the idea of love and magic and doesn’t try to bring scientific reasoning into any of it Bc, I’ll say it again, it’s a kids movie about love and magic. So I doubt even the creators of the movie were even seeing it from a scientific standpoint. If his theory were true then there would no longer be an explanation as to how Elsa then thaws.

    Not actually, because the movie actually supports the theory. Don’t go too far or you’ll drown” probably means that she’ll drown in her own powers, and if her power is a super chilled body, then yes, she was technically killed or “drowned” by her own powers. The “don’t go too far” part also might mean for her to not go too far down, warning that she might freeze due to the impact.

Basiclly “Sub Zero” is when it gets so so so so so so so cold that atoms stop moving (in solids the atoms vibrate and move a little) so she froze 2 the more likely one... it isn’t real ice. It’s a form of magic that she can’t control. Just it replicates ice. It’s a completely different type all together. Possibly even a type of Crystal

  • @IrisRiedel6

    @IrisRiedel6

    4 жыл бұрын

    Actually I have an answer to this. She didn't have to jump and "go too far" when she did, because just before that she was given enough information and could just use her common sense to figure it out. Anna was able to figure it out just by seeing one scene, no words were there to explain anything or give her the answer: dam. Elsa essentially knew the same thing from them talking (in words) that Anna saw in a single moment (in a picture).

    Its important to first understand what the line "the cold never bothered me anyway" means, the word bother means to disturb or upset someone, so if for example someone who doesn't know how to play the flute tries to play it in front of me and I don't mind, I can say that he isn't bothering me, saying so won't mean I can't hear him, it just means I'm fine with it, in the same way Elsa probably feels cold but she doesn't mind it which is why she says it doesn't bother her, simple

    From what I understand, atholaocin or whatever it is, is supposed to be heavily linked to the ice powers some how, which makes since, consider avatar for instance. In Avatar: the last airbender powers vary based on environmental factors and in star wars, as is proved on this channel and in canon, some places are stronger in the force than others. In the freezing situation it could be like an overclocking, like if you try to run 500 miles when you've never ran a day in your life you will end up collapsing at some point, which can be applied to magical hotspots. If atahallen is connected to the ice powers then that means that elsa's powers would be stronger there, but she couldn't handle it since so much had been pent up there, as is told in the movie. Another example would be if you have a super neutron star dense cube of iron, which would have its own gravitational field due to the density being extremely high. Just a nice possibility that would make sense if you stuck purely to the narrative world of magic.

    Aren’t human technically made out of mostly water? So maybe the water is cooler in her body, similarly to the water from the freezer. When she hit the ground, she froze similarly to the water from the freezer. And maybe since her water is cooler and she was born with it, it kind of allowed her to be surrounded by the coolness her whole life and gave her immunity. (But hey, that’s just a theory. A Film Theory!)

    That would be dark, but Elsa specifically says that SHE woke the spirits of the forest when Anna asks her after Arendelle is forced to evacuate. The movie doesn't go into much detail of exactly how she did that and its implications (since it seems like the Northuldra are familiar with the rock giants, but not the fire spirit), but that line of dialogue implies that the 4 spirits have been dormant since the forest was closed off by the fog. Like I said, the movie isn't super clear or consistent on that fact, so it's still up for interpretation.

    Ø is a Norwegian/Danish version of the letter Ö, that is used in swedish. It does not exist in English. About the name, it is pronounced seourfuuglouuya. Remember that it might sound a little weird because in the nord, we pronounce the some letters differently, so i tried to change it so that you would be able to say it.

    If anyones wondering how to pronounce Sørfugløya, I’ll teach you! So first of all, how to pronounce this letter: ø. So imagine the sound you make when you’re thinking, and you say “uuuuum…” that’s the sound the letter makes, without the ‘m’. So it’s basically just “uuuuh”. Then apply it to the word: S-uuuh-r… fug-l… uuuh-ya. Say it a few times and then you know how to pronounce it! ❤✨
