Film Theory: Frozen 2 is DANGEROUS. Here's why.

In Frozen 2, a key plot point is the idea presented by everyone's favorite snowman, Olaf. He tells us that water has memory. That is a concept that has been around for a while and, while I am not one to fault the water based science of a creature that is literally made from frozen WATER, that is exactly what I am here to do. You see, that was something I needed to learn more about and, OH BOY, did I find out how bad Olaf's science really is! Don't let a snowman teach you science Theorists!

I had a friend with legitimate medical concerns for her children. She was convinced homeopathy (the idea that one particle of substance per biillion particles of water is effective medicine because water has a "memory") was how to treat her kids. Her kids didn't die and that convinced her that this philosophy is good medicine, so now she travels the US selling essentially water to people with legitimate health concerns. If they die, they did something wrong. If they live she is their savior. What we are talking about here is homeopathy and it is dangerous because people forego legitimate healthcare for distilled water.

Well, to contrast what you mention at the end, teaching children that water has memory could lead them to be more susceptible to alternative therapies, such as homeopathy; an alternative therapy specifically being based around this idea of dilution and water memory. Furthering what you mentioned, it teaches children to ignore the skeptics and just believe, a thought process quite at odds with critical thinking.

I'm pretty sure when when Olaf says "it's disputed by many but it's true" he's talking about the people in the Frozen universe. He's trying to establish a sort of believable explanation for Elsa's power, but there will always be people who doubt things. Before Elsa's escape from the castle, I highly doubt anyone even knew magical powers like that are possible. Plus, even to this day we have science deniers, so it's highly likely that the in movie universe could have deniers, or just people who never seen any proof and doubting it

Well dies irae means Day of Wrath and is about Judgement Day. You could argue that it could relate to this "A past wrong has to be made right", basically meaning that someone has to redeem the sins of the past. So basically the voice is calling Elsa to bring justice (which is the reason maybe why the call stopped. Not because Elsa died but because she found out the truth and brought Justice)

I think it’s more thematic. Like in Tangled the series, the story catalyst is an environmental disaster caused by unfulfillment. Rapunzel is bored, Elsa wants a gf and Cass feels consumerism is the only way she can assert herself. And water having memory is more about the effects of those desires on the natural world. That’s what Moana confronting Te Fiti is about too.

This one hits close to home. Ever since I watched that movie with my mom, she has completely believed that fact. Even tho, right after the movie I told her that I was coincidentally reading about it not a long time ago and that it was disproved many times. And I was really furious because they were pushing that message as a fact. Every since then she spreads the lie to everyone she knows and buys extremely expensive water because of it.

If it helps... Frozen is very clearly a fantasy movie. Just because some things that are true in real life are true in their world, that doesn't mean that everything that's true there is also true here. It's probably not great to believe everything a sentient snowman says...

The substances and thickness of ice layers can help indicate the conditions that certain time periods would have possessed. This includes the climate, greenhouse gas and oxygen levels, as well as in some cases preserved specimen ( like Ötzi the Iceman).

When I heard the line, "Water has memory" I jokingly remarked, "Oh great, Olaf is a homeopath." In homeopathy, it's believed that diulting a chemical in the water, and agitating it, and then diluting it again, etc. makes the chemical stronger, because the water "remembers" the chemical that it held. I really thought that you were going to talk about the dangers of homeopathy and "alternative medicines"

They are used all across cinematography in soundrecks in moments associated with death. The four chords play when Luke finds his home farm destroyed for example. In Frozen they are an indicator of Atohalan's connection to the past and by extention a whole lot of death.

Tbh when I saw Olaf in frozen 1 I loved him. His an adorable character, he is sweet, his like a new born baby, his ambition to find summer was so cute and I’ve realized that I was around 7 or 8 years old that time, I thought he was an innocent character, his character didn’t feel deep, and I loved him. When I saw Olaf in frozen 2........ I still loved him but I feel him at the same time. He changed into that kid that became very curious about life and every matter that surrounds him. He began to “grow up” and loses sanity as he asks more questions about anything and everything, heck he’ll even listen to conspiracies and uncle mattpat’s theories, other than that he even sang a song about it(when I am older). And tbh I was 12 the age of curiosity and awareness when I watched the second movie. I guess I’m saying that they were aiming for viewers whose watched the 1st movie(those were intended to be children younger than 9) then growing a bit older with the characters as we see them again with more maturity. I’m not sure what the main lesson in frozen was, like was it meant to be about always sticking with your loved ones and don’t take them for granted or something, but I’m guessing that if Frozen was from a book, there wouldn’t canonically be a talking snowman.. Olaf’s story is just teaching us a side lesson about growing up and that some things just won’t stay the same. Even if Anna sings some things never change, it wouldn’t feel as deep as Olaf’s jokes

The song Elsa hears is based off the Swedish/Scandinavian herding call tradition of 'kulning'. It's quite beautiful, high pitched, and is used to call cattle (though it works for other animals too, including humans, for certain strains) and also for communication since the high notes can travel further than low notes and ordinary speech. Jonna Jinton does some beautiful incantations of it!

@@trenaeturane976 homeopathic 'remedies' largely rely on taking a 'cure' (and I say this very loosely, because their idea of cure is a little odd to begin with) and watering it down again and again and again. Then, they sell the product as a very pricey 'remedy', which, by the time it gets to shelves, has less than one 1000th of what the original stuff in it was. Because people fall so badly for it, though, they don't seek proper medical attention. The way supporters say it's supposed to be that the water remembers what it originally had, so it works. This particular practice dates back to when bloodletting was a thing, so leaving ones body to get rid of bad stuff was always going to work out better than draining the evil red stuff in your veins, but now, it's dangerous misinformation.

I’m really glad you emphasized the importance of the ‘replication and verification’ step of scientific discovery, because in today’s world, where all the news and general public seem to care about is next big discovery, this step is constantly undervalued and often straight up ignored. Which, like you said in the video, could have some serious consequences in the future.

  • @TAK-yj4hj

Max Schwartz Not only undervalued but also underfunded. Not only does nobody really want to be the guy who discovered a thing the second time, but they're also aren't enough resources available to verify every discovery. So you have to prioritize and leave some findings unverified.
