  • @SacredFaerie

    @SacredFaerie

    Technically, -mancy means to perform divination using a specific means (the prefix, so geomancy *should* be telling the future by manipulating or interpreting geography). Divination by definition is foretelling the future/writing prophecy. Yet, you're correct that basically no word ending with mancy actually refers to the ability of telling the future anymore. For example, geomancy. Geomancy now commonly refers to the manipulation of the land, somewhat like what 'terraform' means. However, geomancy used to mean interpreting the future using signs found in the environment. Necromancy, similarly, is now commonly used to refer to the ability to revive and control corpses and/or spirits. But, the current dictionary definition of necromancy is *still* about communicating with spirits to predict the future.

    The initial root of -mancy still means to divine or commune with the aforementioned element, but most modern interpretations mainly use that communion as a request for aid, as in a necromancer communing with the souls of the dead to put them in new vessels for him to command, or a pyromancer communing with the element of fire to aid them through the medium of a controllable fireball. Through this frame of reference, spellbooks are instructions for the caster-to-be to learn how to commune with the element at hand and learn the exact phrasing necessary for that element to accept your request (aka spells).

    So came back to watch this forgetting that I had before but it was a good watch, I would also like to point out a small interesting tidbit about the elder wand, there are actually two different reasons that Voldemort couldn't properly use the elder wand. The first being of course he wasn't the proper owner, but the second reason has to do with what the wand is made of. If you do some research on wand lore you come to find out that we know both the wood of the wand and the core that was used, that core being Thestral tail hair, even more, interesting is what we learn about trying to use Thestral tail hair as a wand core, "The Thestral tail hair was a powerful and tricky substance that could be mastered only by a witch or wizard capable of facing death" that the other reason Voldemort couldn't use the elder wand he is probably the biggest example of someone who can't accept death.

    Okay, genuine question here; where did the idea that you split your soul precisely in half every time come from? I’m not sure. It never says as much in canon, and in fact the descriptions actually provided by the book use words like “fragment” even while working under the expectation a wizard will only make one, which emphasizes its size is small. (Additionally, Dumbledore explicitly states that Voldemort’s mind and powers are intact despite the soul splitting, so the idea that he’s weakened by it is broadly bunk, though the instability is the reason he accidentally Horcrux’d Harry, so it’s not wholly nonsense.)

  • @prabhatsourya3883

    @prabhatsourya3883

    Жыл бұрын

    Nah, there was nothing about "half". The definition in the book clearly says, "a fragment of the soul". I think the "half" word came from his understanding of the word, "split". Also, while Voldemort retained his mind and magical skill, due to his soul being maimed after being ripped apart, thus, he could not possess Harry in the Battle of the Ministry without suffering agony, while Harry could enter the mind of Voldemort and watch a first person view, without suffering any pain, something which Dumbledore confirms to Harry in the afterlife. However, I do agree with your idea that the "health" of Voldemort is at 1% is just bunk. The SOUL was not making his magic power high or low, his skill was what was increasing his power. The SOUL only factored in his death that there was nothing left for him to hang on in the mortal realm, and he is forced to move into the afterlife.

    "Never forget, though, that while [Voldemort's] soul may be damaged beyond repair, his brain and his magical powers remain intact. Oh God thank you, I was gonna mention that one! It's such an important quote that most people have either missed, forgotten or ignored, and it clarifies quite a few things. It makes the theory in this video not quite accurate, even if it was pretty clever! So, keeping what Dumbledore said in mind, Voldemort in his final state isn't any less powerful or smart than he was before, he's just less human (wizard?). The very core of what made him a man/wizard is damaged beyond repair, but that doesn't affect his powers or his intellect (although understandably his sanity has gone out the door by then...). Really, around the end of the story Voldemort is basically a creature animated by dark magic and little else. Whatever shred of humanity he might've had before is long gone, but his magic is just as strong, if not stronger. Honestly, when you stop to think about it, it just makes him even more terrifying! Do you agree? Or not? Well, anyway, thanks again for mentioning that quote, I was really glad to see someone else had remembered it!

    kaze217 Good point. Voldemort is only about 0.78% human. But Harry, with that extra 1.56% from Voldy, actually has 101.56% humanity in him. So he's even more human than the average person. That sure adds a bit to some of the book's themes.

    The irony of the Horcruxes is that Voldemort only lived to be a little older than 70, and a good chunk of that time was as a formless wisp in the back of Quirrel's head. Voldemort, for all his attempts at immortality, got outlived by people who just allowed themselves to age naturally, like Dumbledore (who lived to be in his 100s).

    After finding out the stone hallow was the ring, and that he was a horcrux, he walked himself over to Voldemort (using the stone to bring back his parents and Sirius to comfort him) then lets Voldemort Adavera Kadavera him, then he finds himself naked in the dream-like train station with Dumbledore and the piece of Voldemort's soul. The part that dies is Voldemort's soul, so Harry is actually able to survive the killing curse for the second time in his life.

    It would be smart if he tried to make a horcrux by splitting the amount of soul that was already in a horcrux because as we've seen here you can split a soul pretty tiny and it can still be valid so if he split like the 50% horcrux the diary until like 25% then he gets another horcrux out of it without even taking any more of his soul out I don't know just a thought

    Hari Potter In the book the Professor explained to split your soul again, let alone just once would be monstrous and unforseen things could happen. We already knew that Harry had more of of his soul by the end of Tom's life. The act of making a Horcrux is to divide the soul in half and store it in another object. I kept waiting for the "aha!" moment in the video but I already knew all this.

    This whole theory relies upon the assumption that creating a horcrux requires you to split your soul into two equal halves. It's been a LONG time since I've read or watched Harry Potter, but my understanding was that it was more like snipping a piece off than splitting it in half.

  • @AlmeidaVaG6

    Chas Gulley exactly what I was thinking! Back when I read it, I assumed that the point was to have a reservoir of some sorts so that it could still remain somewhere in the world and you can never go away wholly. So you just need to have an incomplete soul within yourself and some soul somewhere else, not necessarily halves. That's why, I thought, he wanted to have so many and all of them had to be destroyed in order for him to die.

    actually, arithmancy is using numbers to predict the future, so I assume that arithmancy is a branch of number magic?

    Oh Matt, you didn't read the books? Why are you doing theories, when you don't study the original material? The movies themselves are not enough. - They teach number magic in Hogwarts - Numerology. Hermione attended it. - Nowhere it's stated, that by creating horcrux or committing a murder you split your soul in half. It's told about parts, fragments. Litterally nowhere in canon sources. NOWHERE. You made this one up! Slughorn also says that soul is supposed to be whole and intact and splitting it is violating the nature. Taking part of the soul is this hard and you want to split it HALF? - Harry remembered where is the diadem in the room of requirements because he accidentally saw it before. When he visited the room in HP6 book to get rid of the potion book very quickly he marked the place to find it later. He took "some tiara" and placed it on a bust of old wizard. (Really really big coincidence but still logical.) You know, this is why you read books! Movies have so much inconsistensy a logical fallacy. - My personal opinion on deluminator: When it's handled to Ron, it's stated that it is unique object and probably design by Dumbledore himself. So we don't really know what it is capable of. The theory on chosen one is great, even if it's nothing new. But for your next HP universe theory you should really read the books! Love your theories, but with no original sources they have hardly any validity.

    Also Voldemort wanted to create horcrux with something from Gryffindor and was searching for it, that's why he didn't make any for a long time. Also I was thinking what could be a theory based on The Fantastic Beasts... If you're gonna tell us that Ariana Dumbledore is obscurial, you can skip that one, we already know. :)
