Film Professor Reacts to and Breaks Down the Cinematography of This Is America by Childish Gambino

This is my film professor Loomis. He is a punk rocker and had never seen This is America, so I showed him because I was curious as to what he would think. I do not own any rights to the music in this video, this is simply a reaction video.
To skip past the music video and watch just the break down of the video mechanics go to time code 7:06

This is so cool! He’s totally into the narrative and meaning of the piece and he totally wants you to know that, but he doesn’t force anybody’s opinion.

I agree that it’s a perfect music video and is also like a short film. There are so many layers of meaning and areas of focus you need several rewatches. Even then without context so much goes by some people but everyone comes away with the over all sense of what it means. I love watching reactions to it (this guy didn’t give much away) but in general people are relaxed and bopping and the gunshot snaps them out of it. It’s amazing to see them sit up and realise something else is happening here.

The actual camera they have used was a film camera, an arriflex studio 435 on kodak vision3 5219 film stock. One lens was a Zeiss Super Speed, the other lens was an Angénieux EZ-1 Zoom. Btw great analisys!

My understanding is that they are all meant to represent black people who were brutalized or killed by police, including Rodney King's 1987 Hyundai Excel. Most of the cars still have their blinkers on as they would've been left after being pulled over.

I think its be in contrast to other music videos. Where the main star of the video is surrounded by luxury cars and women. Whereas here he is surrounded by old 'junk' cars.

This was really interesting, even though I know nothing about film, I could comprehend a lot of his explanations! I also like that he didn't react while watching, sometimes these reaction videos are so focused on showing us their reaction that the people making them miss important nuances, especially in a video like this. If someone shows me a video or a song and wants to know what I think, I'm immersed in it trying to catch every detail and take it in as a whole as the artist intended. Then I'll go back to parts that I need more clarification on and rewatch/relisten. I'd be a really boring reaction channel, though, I guess.

I have a year left to complete but classes got canceled in person for a semester and by then I had decided to move to another state! I'm hopeful to work with Loomis again in the future one day tho! And I do have plans for film projects in the future although I no longer intend to go into the film industry as a career. Thank you for the well wishes and kindness 💛🧡
