Film 004 Muscat Al Bustan Ruwi February March 1980

This video contains film footage of Oman, capital area as it was in February - March 1980. Muscat was still surrounded by the old town wall and there was no Al Bustan Palace Hotel yet. There were no traffic lights.
Nowadays I also post on
account adjomusic, example • David Bowie - The Secr...
account adjofilm, example • OMAN - Asia - Sultan Q... and
account adjofilm, example • OMAN - Asia - The Smal... .
May be in the future I will post more on OmanAdjo, but I don't have many more old movies of Oman.

Uploader and owner of the video (and original 8mm film) is me, so thank you as well. You can see me as I looked 33 years ago in the Nizwa-film of this youtube-account (Film 003). So now you probably wouldn't recognize me if you met me. Also: I'm living in The Netherlands (Rotterdam - Holland). I still visit Oman sometimes (like January - February 2013), but now as a tourist.

Thanks for sharing this old footage. Was in Oman circa 1982 and you've reminded me of Al Bustan (an empty beach then, with Omani children in trad clothes on occasion selling lavender wrapped up in palm leaves ) and the old dirt road pass over to Qantab, which I think you needed a 4x4 for, as it was quite steep and ordinary taxis couldn't always make it over. I remember too, the old city walls near the Palace, Ruwi, with cars often gridlocked at the T-junction (or was it a crossroads ?) near the Oman Plaza Cinema at weekends, Triumphal arches on roads lit up on National Days to show the Omani flag, and the strong smell of fish being landed at the quay near Muttrah's corniche. Omani forts like Nizwa were all crumbling mud-bricks (I think only the forts near the Royal Palace were rendered then). Mystery and curios everywhere, like a small old rusting cannon lying by the side of the road in Tanuf, untouched in the 2 years I was there ! Had a great time, and still have not tasted food as good as the all-you-can-eat for 800 Baiza Indian food in Ruwi High Street. Hope someone invents time travel !

Amazing rare footages, my parents, my uncles and aunts lived this era around Wadi Kabeer area, they tell me how it looked like before, but I could not imagine. Watching such footages really shows us how people lived back then. It also shows how Muscat developed quick, his majesty has done a lot to improve this country. Thanks to the help from you foreigners back then when we lacked the expertise to develop. I hope you and your family doing well.

Thank you so much for posting these videos. Oman has been home for me since 2007. My colleagues love watching. It brings them back to simpler times. The Oman Plaza Cinema almost brought one chap to tears. Keep posting please!

thank you. this made me SO home sick. I am from India but grew up in Oman (19 yrs)....I left in 1993 and came to the US and haven't been home since. I miss it so much. Your video shows the older Oman I miss most. From videos and pics, I see of it in the present, it appears to have lost some of its mystique. Great music selection too BTW.

Lived out in Muscat with my family around this time, I was young but some vivid memories, Dad looked after the Kodak lab there. We lived at the al falaj hotel for a bit, then PDO Heights, and Ruwi.

@michchristy Thank you. Great (still great) to be in Oman so now and then. But in fact I should now start posting films about the present Oman on KZread. It takes much time and effort though to edit films. On my (other) youtube account a-d-j-o-f-i-l-m (without the hyphens) I have also posted amongst others, films from India and other places and one of the Sultan Qaboos mosque.

Yes, I can help you, because I am the author and owner of the footage. I use 2 user codes on KZread, which are "OmanAdjo" and "Zrisky". After succes with my films on "Zrisky" and several requests from Omani people through KZread I decided recently to start "OmanAdjo", especially for my Oman films (for as far as I have some). You can look up my KZread video's based on these user codes.
