This is an exercise that is expected from competitors in some of the most elite dog training competitions. It will also help if your dog already knows the markers (conditioned reinforcers), the concept of leash pressure, walking backward, and power steering, and the automatic sit when halted.

nate i have a 11year old golden and i"m gettind a 8 WEEK GSD i WAS PLANIING TO TAKE THE GSD OUT FOR SEVERAL SESSIONS OF TRAINING I WAS WONDERING WOULD THAT MAKE THE GOLDEN JEALOUS OR SHOULD I TAKE THEN BOTH THANKS

About how long does it take your dog to perform this exercise well without food? I too am an obedience trialler with a Tervueran. He does it perfectly with food but is a little sloppy without even though we have 2 passes in Novice. Thankyou

Hi, Do you use the same command "heel" when you are teaching the dog to walk on a loose leash and when asking him to walk really near you and focusing on you?

No, heel for my personal dog is for a focused heel. If I just want my dogs to walk next to me then that command is "with me". 😁🐶🐕
