I've had all three, the BMW drives really well, but price of parts is about twice as bad as the Mercedes and was less reliable. It's nearly useless off road even with the right tyres. The Rang Rover was beautiful to be in and drive but the build quality is a let down after all these years. Superb off road and the best on the highway The Mercedes has been the most dependable and super handy off road and towing. The most reliable and cheapest to maintain of the three. Ride quality is the worst of them all thanks to the ladder chassis and torsion front suspension, but still comfy for 4-6 hour + drives.

What they didn't point out was how much was shared between the early L322 Range Rover and the E53 X5, because the L322 was developed while Rover Group (including Land Rover) was under BMW ownership. All of the early L322's electronics (radio/sat nav, keyless entry, switchgear, instrument cluster) was restyled E38/E39/E53 stuff. Even the engines were BMW.

And, like most BMW's, was plagued with reliability issues. It's ironic that BMW's are often regarded as high end, and more importantly reliable cars, yet the reality is that they're just not and have many design failures, and that once Land Rover managed to get rid of the worst of the BMW junk the L322 became almost reliable. The early L322's reliability wasn't helped by BMW wanting to stop the FFRR overshadowing the X5 so hampered the power output of the TD6 and in doing so left the engineers to use a horribly high stall torque convertor to overcome the sluggish feeling it left them with. This then killed gearboxes like nobody's business.

In my opinion, the 1st gen X5 4.6is and later 4.8is were the best looking X5s of all time. The later generation X5s, including the current one, have never looked as sporty. Of course they are a lot faster and the interior is a lot nicer on the current G05 X5, but it just doesn’t match that old E53 in the looks department. At least not to these eyes.

The Range braking in the corner does that so it doesn't roll over. It's in the manual, also the range will lower itself at speeds above 100km/h but it only does that after a few minutes, this helps handling somewhat but doesn't look to have happened in the vid.

The ML is way different than the other vehicles shown here: The average Mercedes owner has multiple Mercedes, for different tasks. The ML is meant to be a work boot, that you drive for hauling, towing, light offroading and overlanding specifically, bringing on pets and cargo. It's the car you have around for snow season, so you do not get snowed in. I don't wear my heavy duty boots every day, but when I do, I sure sit in my ML.

I have had all three and drive an l322, the Merc and BMW interiors are just like the saloon cars... boring and drab with bits falling off. BMW bought LR for the luxury end 4x4 and that's what you get, pure class inside and the stuff which fails tends to have a BMW stamp? The same way everyone was convinced that VW were ultra reliable etc.. etc.. clever marketing at work. The Germans haven't made decent cars since the 90's as they build to a profit margin these days and rely heavily on brand loyalty... something the Asian manufacturers are starting to chip away at.

It's interesting looking at this now at the end of 2023. The true measure of quality/greatness/etc./etc. is what people think and how many are still going after a few decades. How many MLs or L322s are still going, or more relevant, in demand? The E53 will always be the best X5 as they got it so right from the start. They even went out of their way to call it a SAV rather than SUV. The ML is just another typical Merc and the RR is well, a money pit. I currently own a 4.8is and I drive it daily. It ticks all the boxes.

Bonkers off road....nothing does it better? Except maybe a Toyota Land Cruiser. Ask the UN why they prefer them. Toyota Land Cruiser station wagon is unarguably the most popular large sport utility vehicle, SUV in Nigeria. As the flagship of the Toyota family, the Land Cruiser, like other Toyota models in Nigeria has dominated its segment for close to seven decades without any strong rivalry in its class. For instance, there is no state governor in the country whose vehicle fleet is not dominated by the Land Cruiser, not to talk of presidential fleet. The military and para military, prominent private individuals across the length and breadth of the country also see the Land Cruiser a status symbol. Even the United Nations too, have found the Land Cruiser as the favourite large SUV in the execution of its tough assignments in many parts of the world where the terrain are very difficult.

  • @dragonbutt

The UN prefers the Land Cruiser due to price and availability of service and parts. In fact thats most of the reason 'officials' buy them for their fleets. That and they're pretty difficult to break.

Same old thing with any car programme - lets take a set of vehicles and do something they were never really designed to do and the rank them accordingly. Interestingly we dont see them being used as they should, but perhaps that just shows an agenda or bias.
